With the development of society, prison sentences has become a hot topic among people. On one hand, as the East weekly reported that more than 200 criminals composition of a village after releasing out are still keeping the prison habit after sentence (Easy weekly, 2011). Long-term prison sentence would have a great impact on people's physical and mental health. On the other hand, in the rencent year, the proportion of crimes committed by the short sentence increased from 5.2% to 51%, which has been significantly higher than the long-term offender sentence. There are different opinions among people, prison sentences should be the longer the better? Everything has two sides and whether the prison sentence should be longer or shorter is not an exception, it has both advantages and disadvantages. People’s opinions vary from person to person, however, in terms of our opinions, prison sentence is the shorter the better. There is no perfect thing in the world, according to the history of long sentence, it seems like that there are a few drawbacks about long sentence. First, spending a long time in a prison where are plenty of offenders live together will not be beneficial to developing their characters. Second, it is a big expense for government to provide offenders with food and shelters. A news shows that homeless offenders liked to use prison terms to ensure they had a roof over their heads in winter. That means sentence is no more a serious legal way to penalize
The prison system is something that you would have had to experienced to know enough about to judge whether it is the best option for society. My outsider and nieve view is that there is no perfect way to deal with people that hurt other people. God says to forgive thy enemy and love him as your brother. That is practically unrealistic in our world for anyone. Hanging outlaws is no longer an easy solution to crime.
As a country, we should care about all of our citizens and work toward bettering them, because we are only as strong as our weakest link. When it concerns the issue of corrections it should not be a discussion of punishment or rehabilitation. Instead, it should be a balance of both that puts the spotlight on rehabilitating offenders that are capable and willing to change their lives for the better. Through rehabilitation a number of issues in the corrections field can be solved from mental health to overcrowding. More importantly, it allows offenders the chance to do and be better once released from prison. This paper analyzes what both rehabilitation and punishment are as well as how they play a part in corrections. It also discusses the current reasons that punishment as the dominant model of corrections is not as effective as rehabilitation. After explaining rehabilitation and punishment, then breaking down the issues with punishment, I will recommend a plan for balance. A plan that will lower incarceration rates and give offenders a second chance.
Every civilization in history has had rules, and citizens who break them. To this day governments struggle to figure out the best way to deal with their criminals in ways that help both society and those that commit the crimes. Imprisonment has historically been the popular solution. However, there are many instances in which people are sent to prison that would be better served for community service, rehab, or some other form of punishment. Prison affects more than just the prisoner; the families, friends, employers, and communities of the incarcerated also pay a price. Prison as a punishment has its pros and cons; although it may be necessary for some, it can be harmful for those who would be better suited for alternative means
In prisons today, rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution are all elements that provide a justice to society. Prisons effectively do their part in seeing that one if not more of these elements are met and successfully done. If it were not for these elements, than what would a prison be good for? It is highly debated upon whether or not these elements are done properly. It is a fact that these are and a fact that throughout the remainder of time these will be a successful part of prison life.
Mass incarceration has been an issue in the United States since the start of the War on Drugs, because of the political agenda attached to the “tough on crime” regimen thousands of people have suffered as a consequence. The solution to this is one that can only be possibly solved by approaching through several angles. The ten steps presented by Michael Tonry, are an innovative and have merit to some extent. However, mass incarceration results from more than unjust sentencing laws, which is his main focus. If ever we are to resolve the issue, society and the criminal justice system must come together to completely reevaluate what we consider to be “tough on crime” and redefine the purpose of prisons, strictly punishment or rehabilitation. The focus has to shift from harsh sentencing, stigma, racial discrimination to a basic form of rehabilitation and reduction of the prison system in general. The criminal justice system has to do what they are actually meant to do and focus on rehabilitation measures, and when possible completely stop interaction with the prison system all together.
The current policies focus at the consistent social change since the traditional punitive orientation of the criminal justice system turns out to be ineffective. As the crime rates keep growing, the public demands the introduction of more severe punishment for offenders, while prisons are overcrowded. Moreover, the growing crime rates among juveniles increase the public pressure on the criminal justice system as the public demands the introduction of severe punishment and imprisonment of juvenile offenders. However, the penitentiary system cannot imprison as much population as the public demands at the moment, while the imprisonment turns out to be ineffective in terms of the prevention of crimes and recidivism. In such a situation, the public is unprepared to the essential social change, when the imprisonment should be replaced by other, less strict and repressive forms of punishment. Policy makers should have
The judicial system incarcerate based on crimes leading to punishment within the penal system. Although crime has reduced since 1990, the population in these facilities have risen immensely. The intervention of these negative behaviors have lead to disparities within the prison complex. The contribution to prevent and dismay the activity leading to convictions and crime should be conquered through adequate programs. The goal of prevention should be to educate, acknowledge and be an activist. My thesis is do these crimes committed outweigh or justify, their degrading treatment in prison and how does mass incarceration affect us as a society?
Longer prison sentences along with stronger gun and drug laws can be traced back to the lobbying of private prison corporations. Private prisons only house inmates who are considered to be low risk. To be considered low risk inmates’ crimes either had to be non-violent or they have had to display exceptional behavior over the time of their sentence. The largest private prison corporation is Corrections Corporation of America known as CCA. CCA has spent $17.4 million on lobbying in the past 10 years as well as an additional $1.9 million in political contributions in that last 9 years. (Lee, 2012) Senate Bill 1070 in Arizona, which requires police to determine the immigration status of a person who is lawfully stopped if there is a reason
Within this paper, you will find a comprehensive review of the United States prison system, and why it needs to analyzed to better support and reform the people of this country. I plan to persuade the other side (politicians and society) into seeing that the way the prison system is now, is not ethical nor economical and it must change. We have one of the world’s largest prison population, but also a very high rate of recidivism. Recidivism is when the prisoners continuously return to prison without being reformed. They return for the same things that they were doing before. So, this leads us to ask what exactly are we doing wrong? When this happens, we as a nation must continuously pay to house and feed these inmates. The purpose of a prison needs to be examined so we can decide if we really are reforming our inmates, or just continuing a vicious cycle. What is the true purpose of prison besides just holding them in a cell? There must be more we can do for these hopeless members of society.
With the population of the United States prisons growing every day we need to evaluate if they are doing any good. Personally, I believe that we need to keep our prison system, but we need to take steps in reforming them rather than abolish them altogether. The United States has the highest number of incarcerated people than any other country in the world. We must sit down and look at other countries and see what they are doing different than the United States. In this paper, we will first look at what the prison system in America is like and what we can do to improve upon our prison system. Then, we will also look at the Finland prison systems and see if we can learn anything from them, since they have one of the lowest incarceration and crime rate in the world. We will then look at reforming our prison system or abolishing it. Finally, we will investigate other punishment alternatives other than the prison system that we could use.
Many people commit crimes due to their pasts and home life. For example, a young adult with a troubled life by the name of Trevor. Trevor has had many run-ins with the police in his small British Columbia town and the other citizens were convinced that he would go to jail at one point because of this. Soon enough, Trevor was caught smashing the window of a camera store. He was planning to steal and then sell the cameras in the big city. Now, had Trevor been a teenager and not an adult, things may have gone differently. The arrest, the sentencing, and what happens afterwards would differ between the ages. During the time when someone is caught, it can go two ways depending on the age. But in both cases, he would be taken into custody and have a chance to tell the police what he was doing and why, with a lawyer if he wanted. But before that, Trevor would have his rights read to him. As Trevor is an adult, he would have to submit his fingerprints and
Fear of jails and prisons is instilled in us from a young age. We are supposed to learn the common sense between right and wrong behaviours to avoid living our lives incarcerated. Throughout this paper, I will discuss several aspects of our criminal institutions. With the help of the documentaries Miami Mega Jail and Behind Bars in San Quentin both by Louis Theroux, I will go into details about the remove, punish and rehabilitate method, the details of the inmate society and if the public is safe from these criminals once they are released.
Over the past generation, the landscape of sentencing prisoners has changed dramatically. Over this same period, United States of America has made a number of modifications in one of the basis of American criminal justice policy, Prison Term. Prison Terms has taken the place of public flogging, death penalty and torture. Stastics has shows that many states has abolished death penalty. Today in order to deter the crime, Nowadays, only few states in the United States of America such as Texas, practices Death Penalty. Nevertheless, many fierce criminals are sentenced for a long prison term; in order to ensure public safety. In a response to fight against crime, there is an increase in the use of imprisonment. Conversely, many state legislatures have reduced prison term, discharging more prisoners (directly to the society) in order to maintain the prison management. A statistics of released prisoners over the decade/
Recent research does not support any substantial community protection advantage raising the severity of sentences by sentencing offenders to long prison terms. Studies suggest that long prison terms are a disadvantage.
Prison system is one of the most important compositions in law system. It’s been a long time since society has tacitly approved that criminals should be put in jail as a punishment. However, more and more drastic debates over whether to punish criminals or to rehabilitate them emerge in society. The public has gradually changed stereotypes about criminal punishment and came up with the idea of prison abolition, which can be defined as utilizing more humane and efficient systems to replace the conventional prison system. Three points are included in this essay to support prison abolition, which are that unfair trail caused by racism and poverty has already damaged the justice of prison system, that prison
