The most hardworking people are usually the least recognized. They are generally the least paid as well. There must be some sort of incentive for them to continually work so hard. The United States Army has been the underdogs of the military branch. The United States Army is probably the hardest working branch of the military, but also the least sought after. To the general public they are not considered to be at the top of the spectrum amongst the other branches of military. The government has helped in creating a bias within the branches of military by making the standards to get into the military so low compared to some of the other branches. The Army should be considered the “People’s Army.”

A profession is a calling, something that takes work and dedication. There are levels of training and life commitment that go into a profession. In the military it comes with career progression or self-development, be that effective leader by always striving to move forward, and become a subject expert.

In a world of doctors, lawyer, scientists, and corporate executives how can the U.S. Army be regarded as a profession? The answer to the question might lie within the concept of the basic branches of the Army, and the specialized skills and equipment that set them apart from one another. This question might also be answered by examining the concept of putting untrained, well-armed, militia through a warfighter exercise, and comparing the results versus some so called Army professionals. One can look back in history, and examine the foundation and formation of the United States Army to garner a better understanding of it as a profession. Though these concepts are not all inclusive they will help to better understand why the Army is considered a profession by many, yet questionable by others.

Throughout history, the U.S. military has enjoyed a reputation of being one of the most respected and reliable organizations in the United States. Although the military continues to make every effort to achieve excellence, the very real threat of drawdowns and budget cuts have constrained and forced leaders to change the way they conduct business. Even though the objective remains to be building a stronger and superior force, the latest changes to policy have ushered in a destructive zero-defect attitude within its ranks.

Being an Army professional is a very proud and entrusted title to have as an individual. In order to talk the subject of being an Army professional we must first define what a profession is. As quoted in the paper, The Profession of Arms, The Army Profession is “produce uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work”. As professionals, we are require to have the experience and training in earning that title. With being in the field of Human Resources (HR), we have a very big role in the Army profession.

Service to the nation is stressed in the Soldier’s Creed and duties to fellow soldiers are espoused in the Warrior Ethos. These commitments are drilled into soldiers from their first day of training and reinforced through professional education throughout their career. Soldiers are rewarded for outstanding performance using selective Army schools such as Pathfinder School or Ranger School. The soldier’s thirst for knowledge is what makes these schools their own reward and other Soldiers respect and value the knowledge gained at these

A Profession is not only earned through continuing education, but life experiences as well. Soldiers who demonstrate excellent leadership are sought for their knowledge and expertise

I believe this professionalism is instilled in us from early on in our career, during Basic Combat Training.
