The Army is a proud and strong professional organization. The Army has maintained its status as a profession throughout its, over 200 year history. Through perseverance and strong standards of those personnel that have served throughout the years, the Army has proven itself as a profession. A profession is a trusted, disciplined, and relatively autonomous vocation whose members provide a unique and vital service to society, without which it could not flourish. To be a profession requires a lot of trust and respect. Throughout the years, the Army has proven itself as a strong and vital organization. The too frequent moral failures of senior leaders, the institution’s as yet unsuccessful campaign to expunge sexual harassment/assault from its ranks,—the Army Profession is already struggling to maintain its professional character, at least from the perspective of the American people and their elected representatives. The human element of the Army is a real and pressing issues. The moral failures and lack of action by leaders has led congress to take away command authority. This has caused the American people to see the Army in a negative light. Fortunately, all is not lost. The people that join the Army swear or affirm an oath, to support and defend the constitution of the United States. Most personnel that join the Army intend to uphold this oath. However, the human element always plays a roll in the Army and society as a whole. It is this perception, of the mistakes that humans make, that has shed a negative light on the Army.
