Student success day was a great learning experince. I attended the “How to kick your procrastination” session led by professor Steven Hartlaub. In this hour long course I learned what procrastination is, why we do it, and how we can't stop it. The science behind procrastination is very interesting, yet complex. Procrastination often stems from our mixed or negative feelings about a certain task. These tasks often deal with intimidation, fear of failure, or a lack of passion. As a result, we may view tasks as things to be overcome rather than experienced or achieved. As a student in college procrastination is an enemy of my success.
For an example, I procrastinated studying for a test, and my score reflected on my decision. Through numerous
Trying to defeat procrastination is something many people try to do; procrastination can be something that can affect many people by leaving everything to be done at the last minute. After reading the blog written by Tim Urban “How to Beat Procrastination” it gives many examples of the everyday inner struggle of a procrastinator, and how to overcome them. Urban achieves the purpose by using a gratification monkey and by giving different examples to show what being a procrastinator is, and how you can defeat the purpose of being a procrastinator.
Don Marquis, a famed humorist, journalist, and playwright remarked: “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.” If that is so, then I must have been a prodigy. Transitioning to a pristine and more work-driven environment, however, forced me to pay more mind to my grades.
As a mentor who has struggled with finding academic motivation, I think it is important to describe to the new UMKC undergraduate why we procrastinate and what the five-metacognition errors are. The five errors described in the video, Psychology of Action June 2015, are that we often underestimate how long it will take us to complete a specific task. The second reason is that we overestimate how much time is remaining until we must have the task completed. The third reason is that we often think that in the future we will somehow have more motivation to do the work. Another reason is that we believe that we have to feel like it or actually want a task for it to become quality work. In turn, not feeling like doing an assignment will result in
The seniors of the past years who have graduated, left us lower class men some advice about school. Most of these senior left us the tip "don't procrastinate" and that made me reflect on how I procrastinate on most of my school year last year and the year before. I started to reflect on all the things I didn't do the last few years, all the flaws and the bad habits I have, all the things that I didn't do that I would like to go back and Change. I began to think what I am going to do this year differently and how I'm going to change my bad habits
This, in essence, becomes the key to a successful procrastinator; their ability to eventually complete the task they have been avoiding. Many hapless souls attempt to procrastinate but become labeled as “lazy” simply because they failed to reach their eventual goal. In order to successfully procrastinate, one must move through several stages of “putting off” their
Attention Getter: A famous author by the name of Wayne Dyer once said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is incredibly heavy.”(1) In todays society it seems as if procrastination has become a normal and acceptable thing to do. It is often joked about amongst schoolmates and co-workers around the world. Nothing seems to get done until it absolutely needs to get done, then everyone runs around getting things done quickly and often times inaccurately. The trouble with this mentality however is that some things will never get done because something will come up tomorrow or the next day and what you are putting off now gets pushed even further back. Today I will persuade you to stop this habit from continuing. I will be explaining the problems we face when dealing with procrastination as well as how to deal with it and actions you can take to prevent it in the future.
Since I was little, procrastination has been a tremendous issue; however, this habit was avoided once college started. My plan for success included staying away from
Transition: After learning about the science behind procrastination, I want to talk about why we procrastinate.
With many distractions around us, students across the nation struggle with procrastination daily and it is on an upper spiral. Both men and women students are struggling with putting things off such as work, school, and tasks at home or in their dorms. Unfortunately, 20 percent of males and females are labeled as chronic procrastinators in the United States (Ferrari). Those who are known as “procrastinators” are not born this way, however, their upbringing is what creates this habit. Parents that have high expectations counteract the want to complete tasks among young adults. This is because demanding parents prevent children’s ability of development that allows them to regulate responsibilities (Marano). On the other hand, there are several different types of procrastination according to J. Ferrari, Ph.D. One type is known as the arousal type; this includes people who wait to do homework or tasks until the last minute because they enjoy working quickly under pressure.
Thesis Statement: Today, I will tell you about what exactly procrastination is, the causes, and the effects.
A great deal of students don’t develop effective study habits and this ultimately results in feeling a decreased sense of self-esteem, stress, disorganisation, poor academic success, and a negative sense of self-efficacy which is linked to poor self-control (Pychyl & Dann, 2010). This is primarily caused by procrastinating. Procrastination is delaying an activity that possesses important benefits for us in the long-term but is voluntarily delayed in the short-term because of short-term impulsive temptations which offer greater immediate rewards (Steel, 2007). I chose to modify this problematic target behaviour because it was where I exercised poor self-control.
In order to become a college student, I must overcome my complication with motivation. Typically, my will consists of striving for good grades, doing serviceably in my leadership positions, and being driven to attend a multitude of events to satisfy both my interests and inclination for self-improvement. Consequently, the obstacle I must overcome is when my motivation falters, which commonly occurs when I have a plurality of deadlines and events within a short time period. Specifically, I temporarily loose interest in being actively productive. In terms of school work, I lack the motivation to be proactive in homework and upcoming deadlines. Therefore, I procrastinate until the urgency of the deadlines force me to begin working again.
Students can avoid procrastination by following the S.M.A.R.T. goal guidelines. All of your goals should be specific (s), measurable (m), achievable (a), realistic (r), and time-sensitive (t). A specific goal is clear, focused, concise, and well-defined (“Ensure Your Success”). Instead of a general goal like “I want to get my degree,” turn that into something more specific like “I am going to get my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from George Mason University” (“Ensure Your Success”). To make goals measurable, establish timelines and dates so you can measure your progress and stay on track to meet targets. Goals need to be achievable. Evaluate your own work ethic, see what you’re willing to do, and shape your goal around that so you know it is something you’re capable of doing. A goal needs to be realistic, something that you are
“I’ll stop procrastinating…Tomorrow.” This is a mindset that is possessed by a majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it is due may not seem like a big deal, it has many harmful effects. In fact, what better topic is there for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known as procrastination. Even less overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it.
Although I still struggle with procrastination, one thing this course taught me is progress. It takes one single positive act to turn your life around. However, in order to take that step, one needs motivation. During a lesson, I actually learned a formula for self-motivation, which is vxe=m. V stands for value and e stands for expectation. By understanding the value and expectation in a goal one will master in gaining
