How can we tell if an organism is alive or not? Is a virus , prion, virod, or a rock a living organism? What is life? Biologist have studied what makes organism alive for many years and have come to the conclusion the there are nine characteristics of life. Each characteristic has a property which applies to how and organism is alive. Life characteristics are as follows: order, metabolism, motility, responsiveness, reproduction, development, heredity, evolution, and adaptation. All of the characteristics of life together are what makes an organism alive.

Heredity is “the transmission of genetic characters from parents to offspring” (Postlethwait & Hopson, 2011). Offspring cells gain the characteristics of it parent cell. Through heredity, differences in the offspring show evidence that cause some to evolve. Heritable characteristic are known to pass form one generate to another through DNA. For example, in humans the offspring may inherit the eye color or shape of their nose from one of their parents. In non living organism the ability to inherit trait cannot be done because they do not have the ability to reproduce. Development is “the process by which an offspring increase in size and complexity from a zygote to an adult” (Postlethwait & Hopson, 2011). A woman carries her offspring (embryo) in her stomach and is grows and develops. The offspring is then born and continues to grow into adulthood. Non-living organism cannot develop because they don’t have the ability to reproduce or grow themselves.
