On October 3, 2017, the NBA said the traditional All-Star Game would have a new format. In previous years, the All-Star Game consisted of 12 players from the Western and Eastern Conference each. The players were chosen by fan voting, media, and fellow players. However, over this year’s offseason, many All-Star athletes migrated towards the west. A report showed that when looking at the top fifteen NBA athletes, only Lebron James was in the east. The NBA realized that the game would be lopsided and decided to modify the formatting. Starting with the 2018 All-Star Game, teams will be selected by two captains from a pool of players. The captains would be players with the highest total votes, and the pool of players would also be judged on voting.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) makes roughly $1 billion in income annually and the athletes do not receive any of it. This topic has been debated for many years and is still being debated. The debate dates back to the 1980s and now athletes are demanding that they deserve to be paid since profits are made off of them. Some athletes such as former and current basketball and football players came together with lawsuits to federal courts asking for rewards from profits NCAA makes gets of them. Research has opened several different opinions on this matter. There are many pros and cons for paying college athletes. College sports provide a huge source of the university’s income. The athletes, however, receive their scholarship
Do you think professional athletes are overpaid? You might think they earn more than what they are worth for playing half a year, but athletes have many things which contribute to their salary. Some of these things include their earnings from endorsements, ticket sales, performance, merchandise, their social contributions, and TV ratings. Although there are many factors that contribute to their salary, professional athletes may be overpaid because as a society, we contribute to their success. So, in the end, part of the athlete’s salary comes from the people who support the sports in the first place. These are just some of the reasons why athletes are paid so much money.
In thirteen years of golf, Tiger Woods has made over a billion dollars making him the highest paid athlete ever. He has been the highest paid athlete now for five years in a row. We all know that many people in the world watch him play every weekend and admire him, but is the amount of entertainment he provides really worth 128 million dollars a year? Tiger is only one of many professional athletes who are extremely overpaid. “People forget that sports is entertainment,” says Leonard Armato, a sports agent. Although professional athletes provide entertainment for millions of viewers around the world, they are overpaid because the millions of dollars that they make could be distributed more evenly throughout society and go to things of a
Resolved: NCAA student athletes ought to be recognized as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
LeBron James makes 19.07 million dollars a year, Kobe Bryant makes 30.45 million a year, Peyton Manning makes 18 million dollars a year, the average college athlete makes no money at all. Why do college athletes that put in just as much work get paid differently? This is the way many people feel about NCAA's decision to not pay college athletes. There are always people who think teams should pay their athletes but there are just as many who people who disagree. Paying college athletes continues to be a huge debate in the sports world there are pros and cons for both and both need to be considered in the big decision that the NCAA has to make.
College athletes should get paid because they are risking their career of getting hurt, and they will be prepared for the pros. Getting hurt is a big role of ruining a college athletes chance of going pro, (NCAA) makes the athletes that have a chance of going pro get insurance and NCAA covers that insurance which is 90k. When a college athlete gets, hurt they don't pay the medical bill the college does, I wouldn't expect colleges to pay for an injury. When college athletes get hurt, they lose college credits for being in the hospital and not being in class, their athletes and play for your college give them a break and give them their credit. A college athlete named Brandon Roy, who played for the University Of Washington got hurt in a college game and had knee problems since then, in 2006 he made it to the NBA played for Minnesota Timberwolves got traded to the Portland Trailblazers then retired in 2011 then returned in 2012 and played for Minnesota then got hurt the 5th game of the season and then he announced he was done for good.
When you think of college athletes you often don't think about them getting paid. College athletes and whether or not they should get paid is a hotly debated topic that is likely not to end any time soon. It has gone on for many many years and no conclusion can be seen in the near future for the vigorously debated topic. The debate really picked up again when Kevin Ware suffered a compound fracture to his right leg which stuck several inches out of his shin. Injuries like this one often time end careers that have not even begun. It is sad to see young players get hurt and never be able to continue their career. It is also very unfortunate when players get hurt and their careers end before they have taken off. Every player in college basketball wants to walk of the court winning a national championship, but most can’t walk off the floor at the end of their career with the confetti flying from the ceiling and the stadium videoboard playing their picture to all their fans. Although most athletes can’t win a national championship to end their career some athletes don't even have a chance at that dream. VCU’s senior guard Briante Weber tore a knee ligament in a game that ended his college career. Unfortunately he won’t get the chance to play for VCU on his senior night, or to play in the NCAA Tournament. Weber was going to be
Why don’t college athletes get paid? This question comes up almost daily in the media and in the NCAA ranks (National Collegiate Athletic Association). In the past, players have been paid illegally breaking NCAA rules and the athletes and their college’s have been punished and their reputations tainted. The NCAA currently collects over nine-hundred million dollars each year from televised college sporting events and games. Fans come to college games to see tremendous athletes perform at very high levels and pay good money to have this opportunity.
There has been many occasions where high school teachers have to make a hard decision when an athlete is failing, what should they do. I believe that no high school athlete deserves any help from their teachers in order to play. They should be able to complete the circumstances needed in school if they truly wanted to play the sport these athletes are in. If this idea was allowed in high school what will happen to these kids later on in life like in college, will they be able to accomplish the goals at that point when it matters most?
A heated debate has been raging over the issue of whether or not collegiate athletes should or should not be compensated for their performance in their respective sports. This issue is of great importance because the NCAA’s (National College Athletics Association) model is based upon amateurism, and the disruption of this model could be the end of collegiate athletics as we know it. The basis of this argument is a pro/con argument between the parties that support the compensation of collegiate athletes and those who oppose it. This means that the argument in question is not one about should they or should they not be paid, it could be argued that the argument is about which side is making a better argument. The primary stakeholders of this argument are the athletes themselves, the parents of these athletes, the athletic coaching staff, the NCAA, and fans of college athletics. Malcolm Lemmons writes in his Huffington Post article, “there has been obvious speculation about college athletes and the significant amount of revenue they have been bringing to their schools and the NCAA” (Lemmons, 2017). This means that a major argument is over should they be compensated for their hard work that they put into generating revenue for their schools. This is not a multifaceted argument, one side seems to be in agreeance that yes, they should, because the universities are using their name and image for free, the opposite side seems to also be in agreeance they no, they should not,
College athletes making money? Should college athletes get paid to play? I will give you three reasons why they shouldnt.
First of all, all-stars would more than likely get paid the same as players with really low salaries or maybe the bad players get the same pay as the all-stars. This wouldn’t be good because many all-stars would not be pleased that someone worst than they are are making the same amount of money. There would also be one amount of money that players would get paid and that might be a lot of money or not that much at all. Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma city thunder would be getting the pay of $507,000 if he got the salary of some of the lowest paid players in the NBA and he currently
For years the question or topic of paying college athletes has been given much debate. Countless studies show that this idea has many negative factors associated with it, which in-return make it unreasonable. The cons associated with the idea of paying college/amateur athletes include that many student-athletes already receive scholarships and other benefits, paying college athletes could detract from the purity of the game, and the process of figuring out how to pay these athletes would be extremely difficult. Based upon many studies the idea has more consequential cons that outweigh the potential pros.
“As an athlete, you only have so much time. The window only has so much time and then it closes. You have to take care of yourself the best you can,” Barry Bonds once said. Its hard to pinpoint when exactly the idea of paying college athletes was first brought upon us. Regardless of when the idea of paying college athletes was first thought of, it is a huge controversial topic in the world of college sports today. Paying student athletes to play at the college level of sports should be a mandatory status during the admission process because, on average a college athletes works greater hours than a blue collar worker and most colleges make money off of their student athletes.
In August 2016 Colin Kaepernick refused to take a stand during the national anthem. It was not until he took a knee that racial inequality sparked people's mind. Do you think that Colin Kaepernick took it too far by bringing racial inequality into a time for patriotism? Pro athletes should stand for the national anthem because when they do not stand, it’s like they are saying there is no flag and no anthem, football is supposed to be a time to relax and not have to worry about politics, and pro athletes should voice their opinion but that was the wrong way wrong time.
