Psychological Impacts of Counseling
Counseling is used for many different reasons. These reasons vary from individual issues to group issues. People go to counseling seeking help with whatever internal problems they are having in their lives. For some, counseling helps and changes their lives completely, for others it does not. I have always enjoyed talking to people about their problems and that is why I chose psychology as my major. I want to understand the reason it works for certain people and not others. Therefore, I will be conducting my research on the cognitive differences of counseling on certain patients. Throughout my life I have experienced many situations where counseling did help. It really is amazing how much we have going on inside our brains that cause us to be who we are, and do the things we do. Moreover, I really hope to explain my topic to the best of my abilities and answer any questions that there might be. I have a few questions of my own that I also plan to answer with further research:
Is age and gender a determining factor whether counseling helps or not?

The personal views I have acquired throughout the year have ultimately affected the views I have on counseling in a few different ways. Growing up, I was raised in a family that views counseling as very acceptable. As a child, I always viewed counseling as a positive action because you are trying to correct a problem you are having and have acknowledged it. When I reached the beginning of highschool, I needed counseling for myself and the depression I was dealing with. As my counseling sessions proceeded, I really found them helpful. At a time where I felt like my own mother couldn’t even understand my own thoughts and feelings, my therapist could . It gave me a hope that at least I had one person I could tell everything I am feeling to and know it is kept in private. “Counseling’s focus on development, prevention, wellness, and treatment makes it attractive to those seeking healthy life-stage transitions and productive lives” (pearson). In the early 1900’s, there was a movement within the counseling profession that centered on promoting the prevention and the objects that provided purpose in a person’s life. The idea was to help individuals avoid problems and “focus on wellness, development, mindfulness, meaningfulness, and remediation of mental disorders” (pearson). This was the beginning of one of the three philosophies that comprises the key philosophies of counseling.
In order for the counseling process to be effective for the client the characteristics and behaviors of the mental health counselor must be effective. To be an effective mental health counselor the process must include both the art and science of helping clients when they struggle. This paper will address both effective and ineffective characteristics of the given transcript along with an explanation of how a counselor’s characteristics or behaviors influence a session with a client.
I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.
As a counselor in training, I believe that counseling is a collaborative process between you and I. Counseling is a personal and safe process that deeply respects and honors each individual’s unique life experiences. The effectiveness of a counselling program is not just based on the connectedness and interaction between a therapist and a client, but also the framework of the counselling approach in helping the client improving his mental health or overcoming personal problems. There are an extensive number of psychotherapies developed by past researchers, with each therapeutic concept offering unique contributions in understanding human behaviour and useful implications for counselling practice (Bedi et al., 2011).
According to author Kendra Cherry, “professional counseling is an application of mental health, psychological or development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development” (Cherry - Paraphrase). Many counselors specialize in specific forms of therapy. Generally, counselors who focus on specific types of counseling methods usually require advanced knowledge in the specific field. Counseling can be described as guidance of an individual by utilizing psychological methods especially in collecting case history information, using various techniques of the personal interview and testing interests as well as aptitudes. Counseling is a relatively young profession when compared to other mental health professions. In my brief personal and professional experience with the field, I have come to define counseling as a process of engagement between two people, both of whom are bound to change through a collaborative process that involves both the therapist and the client in co-constructing solutions to concerns.
There are many definitions of counseling, but most share the same idea: it is when one person helps another. To me counseling represents one word more than any other: Change. These ideas do not fit into my perception of counseling because many people come to see a counselor because of specific symptoms such as anger, anxiety, and depression. Many clients come to counseling because of those three topics and it would be frustrating to be a client of someone who doesn’t focus on those. Anger is an emotion that many people want to explore and work through in counseling. Within our American society, many people believe that visiting the doctor is important to confirm that your body is healthy and functioning the way it should be. Many people have doctor’s visits for regular check ups even without any sign of a health issue. For counseling on the other hand, it is seen as a support system for people who are having “unhealthy” mental issues. Since a doctor is seen just to be sure that your body is working well, shouldn’t it be the same for your brain too? In many cases, bad behavior in children and adults has to do with how your life is affecting your emotions. Although it may seem like you should only consider counseling when you feel like you need emotional support, sometimes you need the emotional support without any awareness. Just like when people go to the doctor not knowing that they have a serious problem that they are soon to discover, one can visit a counselor and have the same result.
