These drawbacks include too many people being reliant to talking online rather than in person and not verbally communicating with friends even though they are in the same room. Jasmine Fowlkes shows the reality in how social media is affecting our new generation through her article, “Viewpoint: Why Social Media is Destroying our Social Skills.” After discussing the results conducted by several researchers, Fowlkes states,“As more generations are born into the social age, social media will continue to be the favored communication form among young people. However, this shift may begin to affect their ability to properly communicate in person with peers.” Many start to rely on applications on our devices to talk to people, but this results in less verbal communication. In addition, Kelly-Fay’s Talktrack research study showed that conversations held in person are much more impactful than on social media. Rather than making social media a huge part of your life, Fowlkes wishes that people would look up from their phones and engage more with others since that could change their lives. The effect of social media on interactions has always been a controversial topic between users and researchers. In a society where technology is taking over the world, it is important to question if there is a way for the government to limit social media use and where the problem lies, in the users or the creators. It is important to think about the effects that will take place on
The use of social media is ruining this generation’s real life social skills. According to Social Media Today, an online community for professionals, “The amount of time people spend on social media is constantly increasing. Teens now spend up to nine hours a day on social platforms, while 30% of all time spent online is now allocated to social media interaction.” Texting or online communications does not allow people to truly express themselves for who they truly are. There is a loss of social and personal development communicating through social media. For instance, people online are unable to use body language, tone, voice and facial expressions through a text. An article on The Telegraph, pointed out that “One in four people spend more time socialising online, using sites such as Facebook, than they do in person, according to research.” The study also found that even when there is an opportunity to see people face-to-face, on weekends for example, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on their devices instead. (USA Today). The problem with socialising online is that affects a person’s ability to communicate properly in face-to-face interactions. The person will feel a sense of social anxiety and not project their voice loud enough for their audience to hear them. For

One of the distinct benefit of social media is social media helps us to build relationship with new people. We could meet with new people who have the same interests as us and that could be the starting point of a great friendship and/or relationship ( Carlos Vieira, n.d. ). This is because social
In today’s world, it has become a normality for one to engage in social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media is becoming more popular with each passing year because of the many uses social media has. Social media, being one of the greatest things that humans have ever developed, now allows us to rapidly share information with anyone living anywhere in the world. In fact, social media not only affects regular users, but has now changed the way major platforms such as politics and businesses communicate with their consumers. Although social media allows you to communicate with virtually anyone, the interactions that come with social media are very limiting and have the potential to make one feel lonely or
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. What do these four sites have in common? They are all social media platforms. A social media platform is considered websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. We use these sites every day; our friends, and co-workers use these sites everyday.
Social media has taken the world by storm and completely changed the way human beings interact. In the current age of technology, social media has affected the way people communicate in drastic proportions. Advancements in media can be both purposeful or destructive; however, optimum power in this decision lies in the hands of the user. Many people use technology to connect with people from all around the world, but instead block out the friends and family around them. Even though some feel that social media helps build relationships, it actually makes people more socially isolated and disconnected from the outside world.
It is proven that social media has had a huge impact on the way we live our daily lives. Not only has it changed the way we go about our days, it has changed the way we communicate and interact with the ones we care the most about. Social media has positively and negatively impacted our relationships with others. “The original intent of social network was to allow people to more readily stay connected with friends and family” (Qualman, 286). Yet, how regularly do we judge how much social media has affected the way we interface with those that we are closest to?
In our modern day, 21st century social media has become integrated into the daily lives of many adults and teenagers. It is a phenomenon that has revolutionized the way we speak, think, and share information. Despite the bad rap that social media often is accused of, there are some definite benefits to it. One example would be that social media allows us and loves ones to keep in touch. Resulting in the development of strong and steady relationships between the people we know in real life and those we meet online. In my conducted research, I hypothesized that people who have a stronger social media presence or use it more often tend to have stronger friendships online and in real life.
“I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity…” (Einstein). Social networking is a way for people to talk to others when they are away and for them to show what they are doing when they are out doing something fun or just because they love taking pictures. They are multiple social networking sites that children and adults use on a daily bases, such as Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and so many more. All these sites are the stuff parents kids are using and so are others but are they really helping with the society around everyone. Children do a lot of Naughty things on these sites that parents should be concerned about like Cyberbullying, pornography, and gossip. Gossip has a huge effect on the human body and it’s what makes people human according to an article “We know we are violating someone else's privacy and it breaks social rules about politeness. But if people don’t gossip at all we don’t like them, we’re suspicious. What we prefer is people who gossip a little bit.” (Social Networking Gossip). So is social networking really good for people and their society or is it bad and they are going to harm themselves by talking about others behind their back, and destroying their friendships. How does social networking affect our society does it have a positive effect, a negative effect, or does it have a positive/negative effect on society.

In this day and age, it is not uncommon to walk down the street and see most people talking, texting, or looking at Facebook on a cell phone. Everywhere we look, social media is slowly…or maybe not so slowly…creeping in. Social media is pretty great when you think about it on the surface level. You can keep in touch with family members you don’t see often on Facebook, show your friends what you’re doing on vacation by posting pictures on Instagram, and even find your one true love on Tinder. While there are a lot of positive uses of social media, interpersonal communication is not one of them. It’s when you start to look deeper that you can quickly and easily see the negative side effects of social media.
Unless you live under a rock, you probably have come across some sort of social media networks. Even my 84-year-old grandma keeps up with her Facebook account! Social networking sites are not as fun or kid friendly as they seem. Social media is doing more bad than good for our society because it promotes cheating, facilitates cyberbullying, and it leads to less face-to-face interactions.
Throughout the last two decades, Social Networking has materialized into one of the world’s biggest phenomena. Social networking is any Web site that would allow a person to communicate or have any type of social interaction with another person, or user on that site. With that being said Social Networking is one of the most common activities used by all people today, and the number of users continue to rise. The largest social networking site in the world right now would be by far Facebook with a whooping two billion monthly users, which is nearly one third of the world’s population. This number should give a rough estimate of just how many people are into Social Networking as Facebook is just one of many Social Networking sites. Any platform that can sustain the magnitude of people of Facebook or any other popular Social Networking outlets, such as Instagram, are bound to have their pros and cons.

Social media promotes their sites by staying in contact with friends and family and using the sites to find valuable information, but this prevents face to face contact with other people and can causes a waste time when you are suppose to be doing homework. After reading numerous studies, articles and magazines I can conclude that social media has drastically changed the way people interact with their friends, associates and family members. Social media is harming society by spreading false and unreliable information, is lacking privacy, lower grades of students who are very active social media users, and facilitates cyberbullying.
