Strict gun control is not the answer to America’s problem for the following reasons: First, Criminals can still acquire weapons in many illegal ways, strict gun laws violate the rights and liberties of American citizens, and gun control does not stop crime from happening. According to Laws, “The firearms being used in crimes are overwhelmingly illegal weapons, and unfortunately, the government is unable to track illegal weapons because of their illegal, unregistered status” (Gun.laws.com). First, many criminals can purchase it from a dealer that appears to be legal. PBS Frontline reported that “ The next biggest source of illegal gun transactions where criminals get guns are sales made by legally licensed but corrupt at-home and …show more content…
Self-defense is one of my main reasons for being against strict gun control laws. This world is a dangerous place, and how would someone defend their homes if it were to be invaded, and they did not have a gun to protect themselves. A good person who has a legal gun can protect themselves from a dangerous individual, and protect others around them. Guns provide security to us in these dark times. They should only be accessible to those who are mentally competent and responsible. By making laws stricter, the feeling of security can be taken away. Which is a right of all American citizens to feel safe and secure. “The fear of being shot is often enough to dissuade criminals from targeting certain homes” (Safewise.com). Having a gun creates fear in criminals. As you can see, strict gun control violates security and safety. Crime is inevitable in the free country we live in. If the world was a perfect place, we would not have to debate issues like this. I will use Washington D.C as an example. In 1976, Washington D.C enacted a ban that prevented citizens from being able to carry firearms, only police officers could carry
Addressing the cons of gun control is a lot easier for me as I believe that the extent that gun control needs to be implanted is minimal. Personally, I have never needed to defend myself using a firearm, but I have read about many different instances when having a firearm has saved someone’s life. I am not saying that all different types of guns should be allowed, but I don’t think that the gun control laws need to be any stricter than they are in the country today. No one truly needs a fully automatic assault rifle, I cannot think of a reason as to why it would be a necessary defense. However, I think handguns can be an excellent form of self-defense when used correctly and when owners are trained properly.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. If gun laws become opposed to the law, then only criminals will have guns. Stricter gun laws will not stop a madman from killing. In fact, 34% of mass shooters were prohibited from owning weapons; although, a surveyed showed 57% of gun owners believe guns are too easy to buy and 35% of people who carry guns would make Americans feel safer. Gun control will only affect the law-biding citizens simultaneously as the demand of illegal weapons on the black-market increases. Background checks will only restrict criminals from legally buying a firearm, but that does not stop a mentally ill person; which are usually the ones to start a shooting massacre. The second amendment literally states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Protected by the second amendment, it will be hard to regulate guns because now every single individual has a right to bear arms. For example, the Texas Baptist church shooter was gun downed by an armed citizen. Had there been stricter gun laws in Texas towards not being able to have a concealed firearm in public, the shooter could have gotten away. People should have the right to exercise the second amendment; therefore, gun control will not work because criminals will always find a way to obtain guns, supply and demand on the black market will increase and there are more existing weapons than people in the U.S.
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capital number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns (35% of men and 12% of women). America's pervasive gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment, which states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Proponents of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment was intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that a majority of Americans, including gun owners, support new gun restrictions.
The topic that I have chosen to write about is should there be more gun control laws be enacted. What does gun control do you may ask? Gun control is any kind of firearm that is bought or sold. What will be in the essay will be different things of Pros and Cons on the different things that gun control is in. The gun control law should not be enforced more is should be managed better for people who do not know what they are doing. The Second Amendment protects the people the rights to own guns. As us the people we have the right to bare arms for the need of protecting ourselves.
Currently, it is very easy for anyone to get their hands on a gun. If the laws and regulations were made to be stricter, the amount of people who die due to gun violence could potentially and would most likely decrease. If someone needs a gun fast and wants to do something illegal with it, they are not going to wait a long time or want to have to go through a long process. Guns are also rarely used for self defense. Every year there are over thousands of assaults however less than one percent of these cases end up being self defense. Many people want to own a gun to feel safe and for self defense however they end up being used for crimes. Being able to buy things such as fast shooting guns and silencers make it very easy for someone to commit large shootings. If gun control was more strict, these mass shootings could be more easily avoided. A large percentage of suicides in the U.S. are done with guns that are legally bought. If the waiting period and process for
The article “Gun Control Laws: Should the United States adopt stronger gun control laws?” focuses on the debate on passing stricter gun control laws. For example, supporters believe that gun control laws will decrease mass shootings and gun violence. Additionally, adopting these laws does not violate the Second Amendment, and as a result it does not limit the government from the use of fire arms when it is necessary. However, opponents argue that the gun control laws will not stop gun violence. The problem is the people holding the gun and not the gun itself. Furthermore, opponents gathered that stronger gun control laws do violate the Second Amendment. The author illustrates the debate on whether the United States should or should not adopt stronger gun control laws.
Gun control has been a long debate to determine if it’s better to have stricter access to firearms. America is one of the few countries that has gun rights embedded in their constitution. But what makes the US exceptional is that it has the right to keep and bear arms, other countries do not provide the right to have access to them, but rather, the government is allowed to regulate its use. The right to bear arms has also been the cause of growing violence and crime, at least according to anti-gun lobbyists. Citizens should be aware the dangers and harm that guns present to society. Controlling the sale of firearms can greatly decrease the number of violent crimes.
One of the most controversial issues in our society today is the topic of private gun ownership and gun control laws. This controversy has arisen mostly due to the different ways that the second constitutional amendment is interpreted. The amendment states that "a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" (Lott, 2000). On one side of the issue, there are those that believe that the amendment guarantees the right of individuals to possess and carry a wide variety of firearms. On the other side are those that contend that the amendment was only meant to guarantee to States the right to operate militias.
You’re in your house and someone breaks in. Oh no, gun control laws said you can’t have a gun! You have no protection, so you’re dead within seconds. This is why the U.S. does not need tougher gun control laws. We need guns for protection, we should have the right to conceal one at all times, and the second amendment says we can have a firearm.
The amount of crimes happening today will only increase with stricter gun control laws because there is a higher temptation to steal guns. An American citizen claims, “Ever since I first learned how to shoot, the issue with gun violence around the nation became clear: Guns are not the problem; people are” (Sherfenski). Police need to lock up these people committing the disastrous crimes that affect so many innocent lives. These blameless people are not prepared when they are being attacked, and that is because most shootings tend to happen in areas where guns are controlled. The former United States Secretary of Education, William Bennett, explains the reason that criminals decide to go to places that have controlled gun laws is because: “These murderers, while deranged and deeply disturbed, are not dumb. They show up to schools, universities, malls and public places where their victims cannot shoot back” (Bennett). Even if guns are controlled in public places including malls and schools, where there are uncontrolled shootings, why would it make a difference if they were controlled everywhere? It would not make a difference whatsoever because these crimes are done out of pure, revolting pleasure. Committing a crime is one thing, but taking away a right that was given to Americans in the 1790s is a whole different story.
The United States needs stricter federal handgun control laws because stricter gun control laws would reduce the number of handgun deaths and injuries, more gun control laws would lead to fewer suicides, banning high-capacity magazines would prevent mass shootings and murders, stricter gun control laws have worked in other countries by leading to lower homicide and suicide rates than the United States, and guns are rarely used in self-defense and they do not decrease crime rates.
Gun control is, put simply, damaging our rights. It has been shown countless times in history that gun control has little to no positive effect on crime in the area that the gun control was implemented. In some cases, crime rates actually rose in those areas. In modern American society, there are several statistics that can prove my viewpoint on this topic as the proper one. A survey of over 18 thousand prison inmates showed that 30% of state offenders and 35% of federal offenders were in the possession of a firearm while committing the crime. Another survey of inmates convicted of felons throughout 11 state prisons had stated that 34% had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured” by an armed would-be victim. 69% knew someone that had been. On another note, there were 40% of these felons that made the choice not to commit a crime due to an armed person in the vicinity. In 2008, over 5 million violent crimes, including rape, assault, and murder occurred in the United States. However, only 8% of offenders were visibly armed with a gun. And while I'm on the topic of violent crimes, only 1 in 12 offenders are sentenced to prison (Agresti).
un control is a very controversial topic especially in today's society; whether gun control is good or bad is a very talked about subject especially when it comes to the United States. This is a very touchy subject because guns are a part of a lot of people's daily lives. People that are anti gun control believe that no one should be able to put any restrictions on guns. They believe that people should be able to buy a firearm just like a pair of boots or a tool. They also believe that if someone were able to take away the firearms from the law abiding citizens that just leaves firearms in the hands of people that do not abide by the law and leaves them defenseless. In 1791 our founding fathers gathered and ratified the Second amendment. The
The debate over gun control in the United States been a imposing issue over the past years. This ongoing argument has caused many families tragedy and heartbreak that can never be undone. Unfortunately, we cannot go back and change past mistakes, but we can help the future generation not have to relive past experiences.
The government and community have always been afraid about people with guns and they want to get rid of all the guns. There is a problem with that and that would be that the second amendment which states that us citizen have rights to bear arms but thing people didn’t know that was more based on the U.S.(UNITED STATES) military such as the coast guard and police enforcement. The greatest fear for why this amendment stands is because of school being attacked by someone who has a gun and start shooting which gave wide spread fear throughout the country. The use of guns is a good thing and a bad thing that we cant lives without.
