The key public health interventions that can help with the overall goal are outreach, collaboration, community organizing and advocacy. Anybody that has sickle cell disease, must have two defective hemoglobin genes from each parent. If a person has only one hemoglobin gene that is sickled and the other hemoglobin gene is normal the person will have the sickle cell trait. Hemoglobin is a molecule in the red blood cell that helps carry oxygen. There is an error in the hemoglobin that causes the cell to be sickled. This article focuses on health promotion and disease prevention in older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the first half part, the authors first identified the research gap in health promotion and disease prevention in older adults with DD. One of the major issues within healthcare that should resonate with a registered nurse is health promotion and disease prevention. Health promotion is defined by the World Health Organization as, “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health” (Health Promotion, 2014). An important nursing model that expounds on this concept is the health promotion model (HPM) developed by nursing theorist Nola Pender. Pender’s nursing model integrates several factors that lead an individual to attaining positive health outcomes through health-promoting behavior (Alligood, 2014). By analyzing and incorporating Pender’s HPM with case studies and clinical practice the nurse will be more successful in the utilization of nursing actions that can be directed at increasing a client’s level of health and well-being.

AIDS epidemic in the 90s posed a huge risk for nurses who assisted in routines, which required needles. Numerous other diseases also follow this needle stick infections. Besides the risks that involve losing the lives of the nurses, the financial loss of such infection is estimated to be $400 to $1 billion per year. Due to this problem, several agencies attempted to set health regulations to prevent further infection cases. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required hospitals and nurses to make safe needle containers, prohibiting practice of recapping needles by one hand, and to provide information to prevent infection cases. However, this regulation was disputed due to the limit that it sets, making emergency cases difficult address as quickly as possible. Dr. Janine Jaegger argued that the focus should be shifted to product design that can help nurses and that provides safety. The Department of Labor and Department of Health and Human Services agreed to the idea and stated that engineering control should be used to reduce worker exposure to harmful substances (293). This idea has a legitimate support since articles in 1984 and 1985 indicated high alarms on number of diseases infections due to the design of the needle sticks.
