Once Debra stopped working at The Hawthorne Hotel, I think the public perception outside the hospitality industry would be sympathetic towards Debra. She has been a single parent for 17 years, raising her daughter by herself, and was told she had to work during her graduation, and was then essentially told she was not allowed to work there anymore because she went to her graduation anyway. Being “fired”, in the view of the public, for going to watch a huge achievement from your child will likely garner a lot of sympathy towards Debra and some outrage towards Hawthorne for their treatment of the situation. It would probably cause some outrage due to the fact that Debra followed all the appropriate steps to not work that day. She requested …show more content…
For example, if a worker called out because she “didn’t feel like working today”, that seems to be their view of unacceptable excuses. However, it differs with Sara and other supervisors because they seem to be stricter on the issue. To them unacceptable excuses would be that they are available to work for whatever reason but will not. Debra’s situation is a good example; another is an employee not going to work because they do not have a babysitter for their child. Typically, parents have multiple babysitters on standby to be able to call as backups if needed, family members are also a good solution so for supervisors it would be understandable frustrating to not come into work because an employee made a mistake and did not prepare the proper day care for their child. Supervisors being a little stricter on unacceptable excuses seem warranted as the hotel’s time off system seems to be fair. A two weeks’ notice is not unreasonable and most businesses follow this requirement. Calling out four hours in advance is also not an unreasonable request. Supervisors need time to find a replacement to cover your shift, four hours is adequate time for a supervisor to do so before other employees start making other plans for the day. Also, chances are if you really are sick enough not to go to work, you would know four hours before your shift. In this situation, it seems very
When being late or tardy, you are showing that you are not a professional. It can also be assumed that you do not care or respect your job the way you should or need to. When your employer begins to think that you are careless with your job or don’t care about your job they can decide that you are no longer a valuable asset to their
Superior’s current policy of seven vacation days and five sick days a year for the employees is not ideal for emergencies and for an unscheduled occurrence that may require the employee to take a day off. The policy, as written right now, does not give Joan Jackson enough time to properly staff the areas when an employee calls the morning of shift and states he/ she cannot make it to work today. Right now, employees are using sick days to whatever his/ her need is that day, which is more than likely not in regards to the employee being sick. When an employee calls off the morning of work, without any prior knowledge, it will affect the entire company and will make it hard to cover that shift. Also, if more than one employee of that same
The hospitality and leisure industry hug a variety of sectors and businesses across hotels, restaurants and restaurants, travel and tourism, gaming, sport and leisure. The sector is reliant on the consumer confidence and business sentiment and is facing rising pressure to deliver innovation, value and quality. Hospitality is that business that helps people to feel welcome, relaxed and to enjoy themselves. It is all about customer service and providing the best quality and experience possible for the customers. (Discover Hospitality, 2012)
272). Absenteeism is a common problem in the workplace today, and it is a widespread concern in many organizations. Employees call out sick for a variety of reasons, but if it occurs frequently enough it becomes an obvious issue. Some staff members make absenteeism a habit, meaning they call out more than their peers. At this point, absenteeism results in disruptive work processes for other staff members and becomes financially draining to the employer (Sullivan & Decker,
Before anyone takes a day off from work, there supervisor should approved it. It is unacceptable to take days off without management consent. Jennifer knew she wanted to be off long before the day arrived. There is no excuse for her not showing up to work. It makes it even worse because this is a period of time when she is needed more than ever.
HM: Being a Supervisor creates some demands in terms of dealing with a diverse workforce. Sometimes it is necessary to make difficult decisions. How would you handle a scenario in which an employee who reports to you has repeatedly been late but has never been disciplined due to their personal situation of tending to a dying parent?
An employee’s health should be the most important factor for an employer. When an employee calls out sick it directly affects the operation and growth of the company.
There can be many explanations for why an employee would call in sick to work when he or she is not really sick. One reason could be explained through the attribution theory. The attribution theory explains the behavior like this can be explained by attributing it to either the employee’s internal disposition or to an external situation. The employee’s internal disposition could be that the employee always seems to have a bad attitude to his or her job duties and that his or her personality is pessimistic or lazy. The employee’s external situation could be that he or she has a manager who is constantly micro-managing them, which makes them unhappy at work, or the employee has a coworker who is their counterpart who is slacking at work. The employee may have to work harder at the job than the other employee to get their collective tasks completed. This may lead to the employee calling out sick because of his or her internal disposition – they are just lazy and do
If you are unexpectedly unable to report for work for any reason, or if you will be late for any reason, you must notify your supervisor and Human Resources Representative as early as possible, but always prior to your scheduled starting time. The employee must contact their supervisor via the department's requirements.
If an employee is absent for more than 3 consecutive days, the employee may be asked to provide an explanatory note from his/her physician.
It has come to my attention that some of our supervisors are not following our scheduling advance time off policy and procedures, Such as vacations or pre-scheduled doctor’s appointments. Employees are required to ask for and receive permission for scheduling time off in advance. Some of our supervisors are allowing employees to use the eCATS system as a substitute for communicating with their supervisor when requesting time off in advance, but as presented in my supervisor training eCATS is not to be used as a substitute for communicating such requests. Employees must be encouraged to speak directly with their supervisors when requesting time off. This must be enforced by supervisors for employees requesting to schedule time off and all requests
Time off requests are submitted a month in advance, if you can't make a scheduled shift you must find your replacement and one has to be prepared to work on holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Good attendance is a critical value that everyone in the team must possess to ensure overall success. Although I have managed to do this, not all of my coworkers have the same dedication. There have been instances when my peers didn't check their work schedule, didn't get their shift covered, arrived hours late for their shift or they just didn't show up to work. This makes it very difficult to provide excellent customer service, it creates additional stress to the team, and affects our sales performance. I can understand unforeseen events that cause one to arrive late or miss a day of work, but when it's a constant issue it can be very frustrating. This experience has taught me that we are all an important piece to the puzzle. Each person in the team must be responsible and committed to the goal and purpose to achieve success. There will always be times when others quite on their responsibilities, but keeping a positive attitude and focusing on the goal will make these times easier to
Thanks for your prompt response on this matter. Major those Absentees don't make any type of sense. The excuses were doctor's appointments, and I was in class part of the day. I came to class and leave at the time of my appointment. I am only out of class when I am sick. The gym excuse I was in gym class, and I got an allergic reaction from unknown substance in the gym that causes my eyes to become blood shoot red. Capt. Jensen sent me home. I have the same doctor’s appointment coming up again, now I am scared to make them because I don’t want my permanent records to smear with absentees. This is really bad for me. I don’t take things like this too lightly, being on time and present is very important to me.

There are an unlimited number of reasons that an employee can provide for his or her absenteeism – some under the employees direct discretion, others such as illness or emergency not under the control of the company or the employee.
