Public Policing vs. Private Security AJS 502/Survey of Justice and Security Jessica Bishop June 3, 2012
Public Policing vs. Private Security Public policing stands for more in society than private security because of the funding provided. Most private security agencies have to acquire more public access to obtain society’s opinion and to get customers to represent the company. The more information gathered about the two companies and compared for society to view the better outcome for the final result for each company to experience in

All of these elements are needed for private security organizations to become successful in what is required in society. Public policing is responsible for the actions of assisting the public and society to ensure the safety of individuals. Most public organizations assist private organizations because of the lack of equipment and sometimes staff availability required for some areas of security. Most private security organizations acquire most public officials with training because of the higher paid officials who leave the public agencies to grow and expand. Most public organizations protect the public just like private organizations but still have jurisdictions and private property not in contract to assist in certain situations. Most private organizations will contact public organizations for assistance if an emergency arises and assistance is necessary to control and isolate the situation. Private organizations
Similarly to the Oakland boys, finally, I too have suffered from over/under policing. Certain negative behaviors in my elementary were overlooked, such as bullying, despite the zero-tolerance policy. Most teachers would ignore the zero-tolerance policy and choose not to police my bully's bad behavior. When it came to pushing me down stairs, calling me fat and ugly, or rubbing my possessions into the dirt to ruin them, my teachers were lackluster in their policing. However when it came to minor, easily punishable 'crimes' that I committed, like wiggling in my chair, they were over-policing machines. This led me to the same distrust in authority as it did for the Oakland boys, I despised my teachers and thought of them as incompetent, unfair, and part of the problem- not to be trusted.
Society in general have showed the distrust, protests and many questions for the like hood of the police profession. The reputation of the police profession are that of the 6 pillars of policing in the modern world
In the United States, there are city, county, state, and national police forces. They have very difficult and dangerous responsibilities. These public servants are required to perform many different jobs. They enforce laws and maintain order. They teach people how to help prevent crime and to protect themselves ( Mittleman, 2000). They offer assistance and take charge of many different situations such as car accidents, flooding, and hurricanes. Police
The first con for community policing is some departments are using the term as an aggressive law enforcement tactic in certain areas. Cops could use for showing their presence among the people where there is no need for them. The community does not know what is going on and the cops are keeping the people in the dark that cerate distrust among everyone. Now you have resentment among both police and the local people. Might be seen as harassment by police when show aggressive.
In the field of policing there are a couple different paths for an individual to choose from and they include private security and public policing. State government, city government, and towns normally provide the community with a public police force to enforce the laws and protect the citizens. Police officers are very important within a community but sometimes a private security can come in and help out and this frees up time for the public policing. Private security personnel generally work for a private company that handles their own dispatching, training and recruiting. Private security functions include loss-prevention duties or protective services that would not be
Private police forces are law enforcement bodies that are owned and controlled by non-governmental entities. Private policing developed in Great Britain in the 1500 when private watchmen and thief-takes would function as a police force. They were funded by private individual and by privately funded rewards for catching criminals. The criminals would then be compelled to return stolen property or pay restitution. Early forms of private of policing would give way to Johnathan Wild, who is considered to be one of the first known private police agents from the 1800’s. He contributed to maintaining social order. Wild was a police agent during a time in England when property crime was becoming rampant. He would retrieve stolen goods and helped police
Public Safety – The role of looking after the public's safety. A state, federal or local organization that looks after the safety of the public.
"Private security and public law enforcement share many of the same goals: preventing crime and disorder, identifying criminals, and ensuring the security of people and property," ("Private Security and Public Law Enforcement," n.d.). There are many more private security officers than public police officers, making tandem projects and collaboration essential ("Private Security and Public Law Enforcement," n.d.). There may be some overlap between public law enforcement and private security, but generally the latter can be more highly specialized and are therefore useful in situations such as campus security.
Policing major concerns are keeping citizens safe in their state and community, and enforcing their laws. The law enforcement agencies focus is upholding the law in making sure they intercede on the goal. Once Congress appointed the federal with power to regulate the United States but came with jurisdiction, containing to the United States Constitution for states to hold their own power the people must abide by laws. The police force includes protecting and serving the people and must enforce what the law is mandated. The police have several concerns with trying to protect and serve the public, keeping the communities with peace and not violated the government rules on the United States Constitution rights. The police
Public order, as it relates to modern society, is an integral part of both law enforcement and community. In contrast to individual rights, public order is all that stands between crime and the public. In times, such as these, with fear and concern about
Policing in America underwent a major paradigm shift in the way that law enforcement was carried out – this shift was known as a shift from the Political Era to the Professional (Reform) Era (Roberg, Novak, Cordner, & Smith, 2015). This switch in eras happened in the United States during a period branded as the Progressive Era, when many “types of problems … began to be addressed not only in the public sector but also in private enterprise” (Roberg et al., 2015, p. 41). This movement affected the United States and the American life since it functioned on the ideas that there should be “(1) honest and efficiency in government, (2) more authority for public officials (and less for politicians), and (3) the use of experts to respond to specific
What are the strengths and weaknesses of leaving the primary responsibility for police protection to local governments versus the federal or state government?
A major impetus of the COPS grant program was the enhancement of officer safety. Not
The principle role of police organizations is to uphold and enforce the law. Police organizations achieve this by safeguarding life and property, maintaining public order, and through detecting and preventing crime. Policing at the state level is composed of separate police organizations. At the state level we have the City or Local Police, County Sheriff and State Police, also known as Highway Patrol or State Troopers. The U.S. government gives each state the authority to self-govern so each state has its own Penal Codes and every state policing organization follows its own Penal Code. Policing at the Federal level is composed of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Secret Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Federal policing agencies oversee all federal laws.
Policing is a vital and visible component of our criminal justice system. To protect and serve is a basic responsibility of every police department, specifically in Canada. In Canada, citizens have a lot of faith in the police, as they look forward to police for any kind of safety concerns they may have, yet people are also very quick to judge the police. The police play an important role in minimizing threats and maximizing safety of their citizens. The role of the police in our society is shaped by social, economic and political factors.
