What is the purpose of death? No one knows for certainty what exists past this point. People like Robert Ebert believe nothing exists after death. In the fantastical mind of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Prince Hamlet states that post-death are a whole undiscovered country and a new start. But people still have unanswerable questions on what purpose death serves. “It clears out the old to make way for the new” (Commencement Address, Jobs). Steve Jobs provide a strong front of why Life created death: to refresh the world with a new, more excelling generation. He claims that death is inescapable, and this claim is possibly the only accurate thing anyone would get from researching death. Steve Jobs admitted that when he came close to death and survived, he would never want to come near it again. “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share” (Commencement Address, Jobs). Death is the end point and everyone knows it. There is no getting past it. This is why Steve Jobs believe that death is Life’s greatest invention. Death’s purpose was to create a fresh start for others, and although everyone …show more content…
Ebert was known to be a little high-tempered at his younger age, but when he realized he was dying he changed his mental state to a happier place. “I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear” (Roger Ebert: The Essential Man, Jones). Ebert knows he is dying, and just like Steve Jobs, they felt their true self: no more embarrassment, no more self-pride, no more fear of failures, etc… When death is near the edge, and someone knows it, they start to change their view on life. Based on Ebert’s comment, he knows death is coming and he cannot do anything about it but to live the rest of his life as happy as he
It is inevitable that we will all die it is a fact that everyone must come to terms with. There comes a time in everyone’s life that they must face death; a friend’s tragic accident, a family member’s passing or their own battles with diseases. When faced with the idea of death people will act in different ways some may find it therapeutic to apologize for the negative they have done, some may want to spend time with loved ones to ease the future pain, and others may decide that their life was not what they believed. The story Death Constant Beyond Love tells us about a man named Senator Sanchez who is living a happy life with his wife and five kids. That is until he is told by doctors that he only has a short time to live. Death is
"I want to die," is something I say every day, but what would death grant me? Humans are capable of comprehending their own mortality and have ideas on what could happen after death. So one might say their belief motivates people to live meaningfully. They can act on what they believe to make their own and other lives better and more meaningful. Equally important is the wish to create. Humans can make changes to the world that will collectively influence the future. However, time is limited and they must use it wisely. Death applies a deadline to life that makes procrastination have serious ramifications, serving as an instigator to some. Furthermore, death can be a release from suffering and pain. In these ways, death acts as a protection that prevents lives that have been made meaningful from becoming meaningless.
“When he himself might his quietus make With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life…” When reading Hamlet’s Soliloquy, this line made me question my own opinion on the value of life. If life is such a struggle, and there are so many obstacles that seem impossible to conquer, why not just end it? End the suffering: End the complication: Just kill yourself in hopes that the afterlife holds something better than than this daunting voyage. The answer is most people scared shitless. “But the dread of something after death… No traveler returns, puzzles the will.” When we die, there is no coming back; death is a journey and “No traveler returns.” Not knowing what comes after might be what keeps many of us alive. The fear of the
Death is something that has been contemplated for years and years, but what is it really? Why does it even happen? Is there any way to delay or stop it? There is no clear answer but speculation has led to
Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “The real question of life after death isn 't whether or not it exists, but even if it does what problem this really solves.” The idea that death is inevitable is well known by everyone, yet no one is certain as to what happens afterwards. Even though the subject of life after death has been argued for centuries by many philosophers and theologians. In the article Sign Here If You Exist, Jill Sisson Quinn adequately employs figurative language, rhetoric questionings, and personal anecdotes to demonstrate a controversial argument on the topic of life after death.
According to (Liming & Dickenson 2011., p.3) “thanatology is the study of dying, death, and bereavement.” I believe that the study of death will be a topic to be discussed and forever researched. There are many different aspects of death that I believe people can study, rather it be cultural believes, medically researching different processes of death, or even just what your own personal discovery of what death exactly is or what happens after death. No one can interview the dead. No one can find out if death is peaceful, or if there is life after death, or what death feels like. So for this topic of defining thanatology I wanted to look at the studies of peoples near death experiences, interviews from people who are experiencing death, the different cultures behind viewing death, and lastly the communication skills needed for health care professionals to develop in order to discuss death and dying amongst the patient and their family
Death is viewed as a gate to meet God and live an eternal life with him. Whatever happens at death is always a mystery. In much religious death once everyone dies they will face judgment by God (Noebel,2006). Death is not the end of life; it is the beginning of eternal existence. Postmodernism has no moral absolutes but rather places responsibility into the hands of the
When people hear the word “forensics” it evokes a mindful of graphic, vibrant images that bring about death and crime. It’s a trigger word that reminds people of gore, autopsies, DNA, death investigations, and bullet holes. This word means so much more than just those few examples of what forensics hold. Forensics is such a broad term- it is “scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of a crime”, so with that given definition forensics could mean many different things. You could go from someone who works as the forensic computer technician who can hack into a sexual predator’s hard drive in the matter of seconds to a forensic anthropologist who studies bones in a legal case. All though there

Death is a mysterious phenomenon that can occur abruptly at any time. And, since we have no way of knowing just how long (or how short) our stay on this earth may be, we should use that as motivation to live life to the fullest. We all know what a “bucket list” is, right? A bucket list is a list compiled of things one wants to do or accomplish before they die, or “kick the bucket”. Three things I’d like to accomplish before I die is traveling the world, learning how to play an instrument, and being a great parent one day.
That death might actually be a learning process, that teaches humans that dying truly gives them the ability to understand what they have. That people become immortal once they die though the people they loved and changed. In ancient times, people strove to be immortal, yet they died: Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. But “immortality of a name is less the ability to live forever than the inability to die” (Brown 2). When Enkidu died, he managed to survive through his love and companionship with Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh trekked through the six leagues of darkness because of Enkidu’s untimely death; meanwhile Enkidu’s death gave him time to reflect on his life and find that death brought meaning to his life. Not to mention, when people become older they begin reflecting on their lives. They become content and the feel fulfilled through what they have done. Therefore, they learn to let go of being so controlling and to just let life
Does the finality of death make life meaningless? Although many people feel that it does, Death appears to render life meaningless for many people because they feel that there is no point in developing character or increasing knowledge if our progress is ultimately going to be thwarted by death.
The abstract idea of life cannot be explained by such simple ideas as being animated, breathing, or speaking. Ordinary machines in this century can perform all of these basic functions. The quandary with defining death is not as abstract and elusive as that of life. The problem of defining life and death has plagued philosophers and the religious bodies for thousands of years for one reason; each philosophy or religion has tried to define the meaning of life and death from only their certain perspective. The seemingly appropriate approach to this problem would be to understand the ideas presented in various philosophies and religions and through this knowledge create a new definition for each idea of life
“What is the meaning of life?” This a question that we hear quite often. Many people search their entire lives looking for the answer. It is a question that has stumped philosophers, humbled the wise, and opened the imagination of our youth. On the contrary, a question that we don’t hear as often would be, “what is the meaning of death?”. In order to answer this, we have to notice the fact that life and death are two separate things that work cohesively in two ways. The first is that one’s life is what will make their death so meaningful. We also see the opposite of this, where one’s death is what makes their life so meaningful. This is seen when looking at Jesus’ life and death in the book of Mark. Contrary to the believe that death is
Human beings live, and they die. The scary part is death while the amazing part is living. A great mystery that surrounds human existence is death and after death. What is existence? Is there any purpose for existence? These are two major questions for all human beings. A person can be here one minute, and the next minute they are dead. Every person is always seeking answers to these questions, but no one has any answer that is considered to be satisfactory enough ADDIN EN.CITE Vardanyan2011135(Vardanyan, 2011)1351356Vardanyan, V.Panorama of Psychology2011Bloomington, IN 47403AuthorHouse9781456700331http://books.google.co.ke/books?id=q_23H6AtR2AC( HYPERLINK l "_ENREF_4" o "Vardanyan, 2011 #135" Vardanyan, 2011). Everyone would be more comfortable if they could know what the value of their existence is.
