The QSEN competencies’ that are of primary importance to me are teamwork and collaboration. QSEN in 2013 defined teamwork and collaboration competencies as the effective functioning of, communication, working together, respect, professionalism and quality of care in nursing environment. As a traveling nurse in the field, my overall experience was quite the contrary. Various nurse’s in the assigned facilities exhibited deliberate and harmful behaviors for example, bullying, indifferent, demeaning, and similar to lateral violence (LV). This often occurred from one employee to another; and was/is a significant problem in the nursing profession (Christie 2014 et al and QSEN in 2013).

Demonstrating a commitment to the team goals and communicating clearly to the team, my keen awareness, values, and reflection, goal-setting and planning (personal development) as well as being an inspiration within the professional to become a team member participant rather than an outsider. Good communication and team work is essential in all aspects of my job, and requires some basic rules, such as: Objectives within the roles and responsibility, and objectives of the job, being able to make decisions, sharing information and knowing when it is necessary and when it should be kept confidential. Also, being able to resolve conflicts is a big part or working partnerships, as not everyone is going to get along with each other and sometimes people need to just be able to listen and come up with a compromise. Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) was started around 2005 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. QSEN's main goal is to “prepare future nurses with knowledge, skills and attitudes (or KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare system,” (QSEN, 2017). “Integration of clinical skills with the intellectual capacity to safely manage the complexity of nursing work in key to quality care in a time of diminishing resources,” ( Dolansky, 2013). “It is vital for schools of nursing to meet the needs of today's complex health care systems by including principles of quality and safety throughout the curriculum,” (Lewis, 2016). In the article “What Do Nurses Really Do?”, Suzanne Gordon explores what nurses truly do. She concludes that nurses “save lives, prevent complications, prevent suffering, and save money” (Gordon 2006). Nurses provide care for their patients in the physical and emotional sense. Emotionally caring for a patient and being sensitive to his or her needs result from interacting with patients while performing the skills and using the knowledge that nurses learned in school. Nurses grow in their skills, knowledge, and attitudes through practice. Quality and safety education for nursing incorporates competencies that all nurses must use in their practice. These nursing competencies include evidence-based nursing practice, quality improvement, safety, teamwork and collaboration, patient-centered care, and informatics.
The QSEN competences which are affected are the focus on patient safety and teamwork and collaboration. QSEN defines teamwork and collaboration as the “ability to function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care.” (Pre-Licensure KSA 's). QSEN defines patient safety as “Minimizes risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance” (Pre-Licensure KSA’s). Failure to work with and collaborate with each other can break down morale and communication which in turn can negatively affect the patient. It is important to continue research and studying this topic, because the lasting effects of lateral violence can affect the health of the nurse and the patient long term and affect the revenue and budget of the hospital.
The overall goal through all phases of The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) is to address the challenge of preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems in which they work. Dolansky and Moore (2013) argued that the development and integration of QSEN competencies into nursing education had not have the outcomes intended. They stated "over a decade has passed since the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System" and national initiatives to improve quality, especially QSEN, have been futile in significantly improving quality and safety. "QSEN is a national movement that guides nurses to redesign the "what and how ' they deliver nursing care so that they can ensure high-quality, safe care" (Dolansky & More 2013).
What is a team work? Team work can be defined as when actions of individuals are brought together for the purpose of a common goal. The five core competencies identified by IOM and the sixth added by QSEN, safety, are believed to be necessary to improve both quality and safety of the healthcare system within which nurses work (Multimethod teaching). The six core competencies outlined are patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, informatics, and safety (Diffusing Qsen). While all competencies are significant to the healthcare system, patient centered care is vital to positive patient outcomes and focuses on the patient’s perspective within the healthcare system.
Teamwork is vital in healthcare. When all participants are engaged in a program, goals are successfully achieved. Being able to communicate and work collectively as a team requires an appreciation for each other’s area of practice. Every team member has an important role and being acknowledged provides a sense of responsibility and accountability. Essentially, inter-professional collaboration helps ensure that the patient is getting care that is not only accessible but also comprehensive. The plan of a patients’ care includes active participation by all health care professionals working interdependently in accordance to the patient’s preferences, values and beliefs. The health care team accomplishes the goal of meeting the patient’s medical needs by delivering evidence-based practice. To deliver quality care, the patient should always be involved.
It is important to work as a team with healthcare professionals so that way you provide the best care possible, get the job done right, and avoid errors (Elrick, 2016). In order to be a good team player you must communicate with your team of nurses, a miscommunication could put a patient 's life in danger. Being adaptable is also a big part in being a team player, especially when another nurse may need your help with a patient. Knowing what the plan for things like emergencies, and sticking to the plan will help things run smoothly and everyone working with you will know what is happening. Finally, getting to know who you are working with is a key part of being a team member because if you know how that person works, it will be easier for you to work with them.
Teamwork and communication are very important in providing good quality care, especially in the healthcare field. A team is described as a group of people that works together and cooperatively, between each member of the group to reach a common goal (Sullivan, 2013). For a team to function, communication is essential. A report by McKay and Crippen (2008), as stated by Alfaro-LeFevre, (2013) showed that when collaboration is in place, hospitals can decrease their mortality rate by 41%. When mortality rate is lower, hospitals does not only decreased cost, but it also means that patients are receiving good quality care.
From an early age we are instilled the importance of teamwork. The lessons may come from a soccer field, a classroom group project, or even a song on Sesame Street. Regardless of our future careers, we are all likely to experience some sort of teamwork requirement, even if it is as simple as getting along with your co-workers.
Teamwork is the backbone of effective communication and the crucial cog that keeps the wheel of successful project management turning. The role of teamwork in enhancing problem solving skills, cohesion, learning, and productivity can no longer be ignored.
