Once upon a time, a kind old fisherman lived with his daughter on an island. One day, the Dragon King kidnapped the daughter and brought her to his palace. The poor fisherman stood by the ocean calling out to the sea day by day, for years. It made the Dragon King angry so he cast a spell on him causing the man to slowly turn into a rock. After the daughter heard what the Dragon King had done, she escaped the palace and ran towards her father who has now turned into a rock. The ocean breeze blew the flowers in her hair onto the island, making plants grow. When she is near Lao mountain, the Dragon King put a spell on her too and turned her into a giant reef. From that day on, the father and daughter can only look at each other from across the sea, unable to meet. This is the story of Old Man Rock, one of the unique and beautiful sites in Qing Dao. In Lan Samantha Chang’s short story “Water Names”, a grandmother tells her granddaughters a story as a way to introduce them to their cultural heritage. This frame story was about Wen Zhiqing’s favorite daughter whose fascination with water escalates after she claims to see a prince in the reflective water. Her parents try to convince her otherwise and keep her from going to the river but after a flood, they lose track of her and she disappears. The grandmother ends the story and leaves the girls to wonder about what actually happened to the
The Qing Dynasty’s collapse was due to three main influences, with underlying reasons involved in each. The first being foreign intervention related strongly to militarism, gunboat diplomacy, imperialism and the rise of unequal treaty systems. The second influence was China’s failure to reform and uprisings, such as the boxer rebellion and lastly economic decline. These three factors ultimately resulted in the downfall of the dynasty.

Complied during the Warring States Period, the Daodejing is widely known as one of China’s famous philosophy literature. This text reflects the general lament of a civilization that has been worn down from war and seeks to find peace by teaching people how to live by “the Way”. From a war-torn perspective, the Daodejing deems war and government corruption as evil and traces them back to greedy and power-hungry motives. As a successor to Confucius, it still carries some of his ethics. Because of its mystical overtones, it has acquired a large variety of interpretations. Its main teaching is if a person does nothing, then peace will be restored; it is the concept of non-action or 无为。When a person does not try to interfere and allows things to

Both Qing China (1644-1912) and Russia (882-Present) collapsed because of external and internal factors such as failing government, social problems, and political conflict within the land based empires. Internal Factors in Russia and China were causing decline because people in Russia were losing faith in the Romanov’s, their leaders at the time, while Mao Zedong was trying to establish a communist China. External Factors such as Russia Fighting in World War 1 with Germany, and Japan invading China ultimately caused the collapse in China. What is one way in which you can corroborate, contradict, or qualify this argument? Add it to your thesis.
The Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, collected and put into text by Chinese scholar Pu Songling, is a collection of tales of mostly alchemic, supernatural, and paranormal nature. One of the common threads that runs through the collection is that of the sexual encounters and sexual relations between people, people and creatures, and people and supernatural beings. These stories deal with the subject of sexual indulgence, and clearly connote sex as a negative and dangerous aspect of human desires. Stir-Fry, the last story in Strange Tales, however, forcefully deviates from that trend of the perception of sexual desire. In Stir-Fry, Pu glides over the topic of the dildo and treats it as if it were just any normal other object that would be ridiculous to cook and serve guests at dinner. A scholar’s sexual desires are no less strange than the tales of sex in stories such as “The Fornicating Dog,” “The Painted Skin,” “Snake Island,” and especially “Lotus Fragrance.” The sexual nature of the toy Pu ignores completely, and he enforces the idea that sexual desires or encounters are not as strange or taboo as Pu himself makes them out to be in his earlier stories in the Strange Tales collection.
