Though slavery has been around for decades, racism actually began with the enslavement of Africans during the sixteenth century. Slave trade was one of the main promoters of racism during that time. Prior, however, skin color did not define racial attitudes. This extending type of trade gave birth to the idea of races being regarded by their skin color. In To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is noticeable in both the text and globally.
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, racist acts and events occur many times throughout the story. It is evident in this novel when Scout and Jem pass Mrs. Dubose’s house. As these foreign workers arrive, their passports are stripped from them and handed over to their sponsors. These workers that come over will most likely have been guaranteed a certain wage or salary, but when they actually start working, that really not the case (Maryam, Umm). People should be born free and be able to pick his or her own destiny. Not being able to do that is like being a prisoner with no trial and no escape. Saudi Arabia is a country where almost 10 percent of the society is refused equal rights just because the color of their skin! Black men are forbidden to run for a governmental stand and black women are indicted and can’t do anything to help themselves. Children are forced to go where ever the most powerful person in their family wants them to be. Even though in 1962, under pressure, they abolished slavery, princes and princesses from Saudi Arabia still sell slaves on social media! (Greenfield, Daniel). That’s just inhumane and corrupt for people to be doing to others that don’t deserve a thing coming to them. This country has gotten the world to pay attention to the racist and extreme dealing methods for the Muslim refugees. It was also said that everyone should leave alone any racist speeches and only contribute to the well-being of the refuges who are trying to escape.
