“You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?" (Lee 107-09). "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you.” (Lee 107-09). This quote is one of many that show how racism is used in the story. In this quote Scout has heard someone call Atticus a nigger lover because he is Tom Robinsons lawyer and he is trying to his best job to help him as he can (Lee). Scout doesn’t really understand at first what a nigger lover is until Atticus explains it to her.

One of society's main issue is racism. Even though racism has improved throughout the years, it still is a huge issue. They are still several dark-skin people suffering in the hands of racial discrimination. To Kill A Mockingbird exhibits, numerous racist problems the world faces. For example, Mrs. Dubose said, "your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" [p.134] this displays how inadequately dark-skinned people are treated. Another example is when Atticus tells Scout “Don’t say nigger, Scout. That’s common [p.99] this demonstrates how frequently dark-skinned people are mistreated. Scout then responds " ’s what everybody at school says’ " [p.99] showing how constantly hearing the N-word made Scout believe it was the proper way to address dark-skinned people. Fortunately, Atticus was there to teach Scout the importance of respecting others.

Race is a huge topic of discussion in the novel, as well as in our society today, it is conveyed that we often have trouble accepting difference and make assumptions of a person based on the colour of their skin, not their actions. This theme of racism is evident from the onset and throughout the novel, Lee uses the word “nigger” conveniently to display the underlying racism in Maycomb county and to highlight the racist attitudes of many persons in the novel. This theme of racism is evident in scenes involving Tom Robinson, Atticus states in the courtroom “"Which, gentlemen, we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin”, in this quote it is illustrated that the colour of Tom’s skin is associated with the depravity of the crime committed, this idea that there is a link between one’s colour and their actions is a theme that is a constant in our current society, as it is not unusual for a person to be exposed to stereotyping due to the colour of their skin. The courthouse in the book To Kill a Mockingbird is represented as an old, traditional setting in the deep south, and with traditions of the deep south comes racism. In giving Scout a lesson in how racism works, Atticus also does the same for the readers. On the syllabus of this conversation: the power of language, not only as a way to shame those who don’t toe on the racist line, but also to set the terms of the debate. Racists use “nigger-lover” to suggest African Americans special rights., but also Atticus points out that all he is arguing is for equality and for loving everybody the same. The most obvious form of discrimination in the book is prejudice however, there are other types of discrimination in the novel such as racism.

Systematic racial discrimination perhaps imbeds in any American institutions since the country was established by the founding fathers. The first obvious discrimination happened in earliest chapter of the U.S history, when the Constitution had set up the conceptual boundary for the nation. It is also known as the national identities with boundary described in the context of “Who is an American?” by Eric Foner as “... a state of mind, ‘an imagined political community’ with borders that are as much intellectual as geographic.” For America at the earliest time of its history, its identities were deserved for white male who were the immigrants from Europe continent. Virtually this early discrimination of the Europeans on their new land constructed a system of racial discrimination to all who are not white. The white immigrants in the system basically identified themselves as Americans and excluded many other groups of people residing in the same continent. The systematic racial discrimination undoubtedly has been one of the most provocative and baffled problem which sets up the boundary among all groups of people based on their differences and needed to be changed in the future, for the ideal of equality embraced by the Americans throughout their history.

Throughout the whole novel Harper Lee’s characters regularly face fear and discrimination. Two of the main characters in the novel are Atticus and Scout who experience fear and discrimination first hand. One thing Atticus says to Scout that depicts discrimination is when he said "Scout..."nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don 't mean anything—like snot-nose. It 's hard to explain—ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody 's favoring Negroes over and above themselves.” The townspeople refer to Atticus in this derogatory way because of the way he treats Tom Robinson. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, she demonstrates that racism is a big problem during the time when this book was written. This story was about a girl named Scout growing up in a small town with lots of racism. A black man get falsely accused with rape, and Scout tries to understand why most people in the town hate black people. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird shines a light on the racism and discrimination that flowed through neighborhoods in the south during the great depression. Throughout the story Scout, the speaker and a naive child, sees racism like she has never seen before. Racism is a newer topic for her so she centers her story around it as she tries to figure out her opinion on it. Towards the beginning she isn't quite sure what to make of racism but rapidly as the story progresses her opinion changes and she is appalled at the fact the people think one race is superior to the other.

From the beginning of time where slavery began, there is no sure way to know what stemmed the root of racism and discrimination. But who is to say that racism is a term that is only associated with Blacks, African Americans, or those of African descent. Racism according to Merriam Webster dictionary is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. Even though it is a term that may be applied to the lack of respectful treatment against any race outside an individual’s own, it is more seemingly connected to the discrimination against blacks in today’s society. The black man as well as woman was made to feel inferior to his or her white male and female counterparts and they both were treated as such. Because of the oppression of people who have been discriminated against over time, there has been a gradual uprising and revolt against the treatment that they have received.
