INTRODUCTION The two papers are about reading habit among university students, to determine the effects of the habit on performance. The first paper, “Reading habits among students and its effect on academic performance: A study of students of Koforidua Polytechnic, is written by Michael Owusu-Acheaw. The study sought to assess the reading habits among students and subsequent effects on their academic performance. The study was conducted in Koforidua Polytechnic, situated in the Eastern Region of Ghana, with specific objectives, To examine the reading habits among students, assess the effect of reading habits on students’ performance, examine the material students read when they visit the library, determine the reason for reading, and to determine the connection between reading habit and student’s performance. (Owusu-Acheaw, & Larson, 2014). DATA COLLECTION A questionnaire was used for the data collection. According to Owusu-Acheaw, (2014) 20% of the entire Koforidua Polytechnic student population of 5261, was experimented for the study through methodical simple random sampling technique. From the total of 1052 copies of questionnaire dispersed, 1000 copies, representative of 95.0%, were filled and returned. The figures collected were examined quantitatively with the use of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Figures and tables were used to present the results of findings. The study revealed that 62.5% of the respondents acknowledge the importance of reading and
This student’s preferred learning strategy has always been that of the read/write category. She takes advantage of handouts, textbooks, and dictionaries when studying for quizzes and exams. She also prefers going to the library due to the atmosphere provided by this institution. To enhance learning the use of outlines and note cards have also been useful when studying. Visual aids accompanying the read/write category have been useful in obtaining good grades throughout advancement in education (VARK, 2011).
It has been shown that if students start at an early age to learn to read and write their learning in all content areas will improve. It is for this reason it is important for secondary teachers to understand early reading acquisition as to incorporate those reading skills in lesson to accommodate students with reading deficiencies. Educators can understand the building blocks of how a student learns and develops into a successful reader in order to help them develop their reading skills. If teachers understand reading acquisition they can better assess their students’ reading level. As such, the role of professional judgement in understanding the selection of reading or writing material is to know their students reading needs and select materials
One of the most important foundational skills in the primary grades is learning how to read proficiently. This skill is a key indicator for student’s success for the rest of their educational careers (Wigfield, Guthrie, Perencevich, Taboada, Klauda, Mcrae, & Barbosa, 2008). The teacher researcher believes that the students in her class are not motivated to read paper bound books, and that by implementing an online reading program it will increase her students motivation to complete their nightly reading homework. She also believes that when students complete their nightly reading homework on a regular basis this will help improve the students reading comprehension and fluency scores. It will also have an important impact on the overall academic functioning of students according to (DioGuardi , Theodore, Hughes, Aloiso, Eccles, & Eccles,
The ability to read allows for education, enjoyment, imagination, and understanding. With literacy you can go anywhere: the correct path on the highway, a made up kingdom, or the center of an atom. Reading is not in jeopardy, but rather will remain an essential part of our lives for the next several decades, if not centuries. Reading has proved to be a durable form of entertainment for centuries, however there will likely be some adjustments to how we approach the activity in the near future.
The article concluded that “reading development starts before formal instruction” (Mol, 2011, p. 22) and that print exposure coupled with examples of leisure reading to model after were factors in literacy success and leisure reading habits of the student (Myers, 2014, p. 261). Also, in order to narrow the gap between strong readers and struggling readers, more needs to be done to put leisure reading materials in to the hands of struggling readers.
The lack of interest in reading is due to many things, but tends to begin with young children. Schools and parents do not encourage their children to read for fun (Charleston). Parents do so because they were not taught to enjoy reading, or they do not have time. Schools, on the other hand, create an environment where reading becomes more of a chore than a fun activity (Denby). Schools do try to teach kids to enjoy reading, teachers will set times or page numbers for their students to read. A study on this method has shown that when told to only read a set amount of time or pages, children will only read the amount required by the teachers. The things that children read are normally not something they chose. This decision creates a hatred for reading in children, even if they loved to read before. “In many case, such as assignments make the students hate the book they have just read, no matter how
Reading book depends on multiple factors such as age, education, gender, and race. According to this article, age may be an important factor. The authors reported that the highest percentage of reading group is young age (18-29 years). The statistic also shows that getting older intend to read more. Nevertheless, the percentage of reading is not significantly different in people with age 50-64 (81%) and over 65 years (80%). Moreover, the authors illustrated that the majority of the reader (92%) are well-educated people. For the purpose of reading, in this article, we found that male prefers to read because of study or work, while female aims to read for their pleasure. As per ethnicity or race, the authors claimed that approximately 16 percent of well-educated African-American
The strength of the research by Kucan and Palincsar lays in the Identification of a struggling reader and the importance of the teachers to dedicate one on one time with their students in an interactive atmosphere which allows early assessment with rich texts and bearing in mind, other factors such as home, which can contribute in this problem.
The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of motivation to read on reading gains of struggling readers with and without learning disabilities and evaluate by conducting numerous analysis. The READ 180 program is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of struggling readers in 4th through 12th grade. Moreover, the READ program included 13 students with Learning Disabilities and 25 students without a Learning Disability. The participants were exposed to a structured 18-week program. Also, the program provided plenty evidence-based teaching methods such as whole- group, small group, and technology-integrated instruction. The Adolescent Motivation to READ the Scholastic Reading Inventory measured survey and
This article named “Do Today’s Youth Read Less than Past Generations?” which support Americans to read more books and enhance reading and writing abilities, was written by Dana Gioia, who is a writer and served as the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts as well. In this article, writer wrote a number of different aspects of influences, which involved in social, economic, cultural and civic implications, when people read less, to persuade individuals to improve their reading abilities. I am of the same mind of the author; in my perspective, reading skill is a kind of basic ability for the modern civilian, it is really important in this society, even if the media technologies are developed very well.
My interests in reading did not change very much throughout the semester. This result does not come as a surprise to me, because I have never enjoyed reading, for recreational or educational purposes. It never came easily to me, so I avoided it as much as possible. However, if my professor instructs me to do readings for the class, I always obey. If I do not read the material, the I am completely lost and that is never good.
Literacy at the elementary level then becomes critical to all students in achieving academic success and reaching their goals. If literacy levels are not enhanced during the childhood years, it could possibly lead to problems later in adolescence and adult life. According to a research study conducted in 2009 on reading management programs, the study found that less attention was being made on reading programs (Hansen, Collins, & Warschauer, 2009). The purpose of this research study proposal is to demonstrate how a new and updated reading program can help enhance elementary students in their reading comprehension skills in order to achieve academic success into the next grade level by improving their cognitive abilities. The goal of the study is to test the efficiency of the current reading curriculum in elementary schools and compare them with a new reading curriculum by the use of two classrooms that will contain an experimental group and controlled group by randomly selecting elementary students at the 4th grade
The data collection of this thesis found that 90% of participants believed that their current reading ability had an effect on their academic results. This information supported pre found research mentioned in the Literacy Review where
Academic progress depends largely on understanding, analyzing, and applying information gathered through reading (Compass Now Education Indicators 2015.) Many people involved in studying children have realized the vitality of being proficient by their third grade year. Many students go on to drop
The purpose of this paper is to build a case on which a student’s reading performance can improve through constant monitoring as well as show how teachers and schools can change practices to gather and use data for the students’ benefit. Moreover, this paper will seek to assist teachers to use data for informed teaching. Data was collected during the course of learning through various assessments and progress monitoring to determine whether the student showed improvement in reading activity.
