What is a hero?
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” - Christopher Reeve
What do you think of when you hear the word hero? Do you think of someone saving another person? How about a man with big muscles? Do you think of your parents? When I first thought of a hero, I imagined someone saving another from a burning fire. However, thinking more about it I realized that a hero isn’t just someone who saves people, they can be anybody. A hero is brave, courageous, selfless, honest, and determined. The qualities in a real hero are often missed or overlooked. We expect them to look like superman, when in reality, that isn’t a real hero at all.
Real heroes can be
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer,” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). A hero is just like an ordinary person, but they make a choice to rescue someone, and put their life on the line. For instance, a hero is valiant when they need to be, sacrifices themself for another, and they don't put another in harm’s way.

What are Heroes “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” Joseph Campbell.
As Christopher Reeve, a famous actor, once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” This quote is basically saying when heroes face obstacles they never give up. They always find a way to push through, or conquer the obstacle. Or they find a way to get around it. They don't just turn around and forget about it.
When I was 14 years old I toured my first Military Institute at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. I witness first hand American Troops returning from Desert Storm with numerous life threatening injuries sustained during combat. Troops who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country 's freedom. I recall asking myself “What is a hero? And what it symbolizes in our modern world?” and “What does a hero look like?”, my vision of a hero as a kid included a cartoon character with superpowers wearing a cape, Instead as I stared at a young Army Sergeant, burned beyond recognition sitting on wheelchair, unable to walk as he lost both limbs while in combat, That is when I recall asking myself again, “What is a hero?” The term hero comes from the Ancient Greeks, for them a man of great strength and courage favored by the gods and in part descended from them, often regarded as a demigod and worshiped after his death. Despite decades of envisioning a hero as a cartoon figure such as Batman, Superman and Spiderman, my heroes wear desert camouflage BDU’s. Although in the vision of some, a hero may be inspiring weather it to be oneself or to others, A hero is a person who saves lives. My vision of a hero intel 's of both qualities in addition to bravery and courage which may have been someone who saves lives or puts their own life on the line to save another, the definition of a hero may be different in someone else 's visions. Personal athlete or famous
When I was a little girl, Wonder woman was my favorite super hero. Watching the tv show, dreaming in be like her, I pass my childhood days. Though Wonder Woman has some special powers and her character reflects noble qualities; she is not real. The dictionary define hero as a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements and noble qualities. The real heroes do not come from other planets neither they are made by accident. As an adult I learned, that real heroes are special people among us: people who can stand for others, who can change the adverse circumstances of a community and people who can sacrifice themselves for others.
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer”- Ralph Waldo Emerson. Heroes are the people who don’t give up. They walk into the unknown out of love or compassion. Heroes are humble and kind. Heroism is a sacrifice, not giving up, it is not arrogance.

What are heroes? Well, today in our strong society, we think of heroes as super beings who save the entire world from massive destruction. Although, these types of heroes would be enjoyable to have, we forget that these superheroes are just mere fictional characters played by big film stars. Now, let’s go back to our original question with a slight change to it: What are real heroes? Think long and hard about this question and run a few answers through your head. Well, if you don’t know the correct answer, then just picture a human being who is just as normal as you. This person works at a certain job different from you, or maybe the same as yours, and comes home to a family or is just single. But then one day this person does something valorous in order to save lives or a life.
Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” A person doesn’t have to wear a cape to be a hero. They can be people just like you and I. We have people in our everyday lives who are our heroes. Many times, our heroes are our loved ones; the ones we look up to. My hero is someone very special to me. He has been there since day one and I wouldn’t want to go a day without him by my side. As cheesy as it might sound, my hero is my boyfriend, Max.
“A hero is someone who , in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway.”- Christopher Reeve
Heroes are not just fictional characters with superhuman powers. Most people think that the only heroes are people that have superpowers and a cool outfit. In fact, whenever anyone pictures a hero, they don’t normally picture an unattractive person saving people. Instead, they picture a buff, handsome hero saving everyone and having adoring fans. However, this belief is incorrect because heroes are not just superhumans. Heroes take on challenges with determination and are ordinary people putting the needs of others before their own needs, even if they are not defending the popular belief.
A handsome man with extraordinary strength, a defined jawbone, dreamy eyes, perfect hair, a deep voice, and absolutely charming qualities, breaks into the villain’s home to rescue the damsel in distress and save her from this excruciating nightmare! Yes, that man may be, in essence, a hero. Because of this stereotypical “hero”, we do not see the real heroes in life. What really IS a hero or heroine? A hero is what we make of them, although some are undeserving of this title. We make a hero. You, me, society; we all make heroes. We give them this title. Heroes are role models, and role models, in my eyes, should possess three very significant qualities. Courage, humbleness, and morality; these form a hero.
When people think of the word hero, images of super heroes, super human powers, and villains from cartoons, comic books, and movies crowd our minds. However, our world has an abundance of crime and villainy with no superheroes to be found. The good news is we can find everyday unsung heroes all around us that change the world. What these heroes lack in super powers, they make up in the qualities that set them apart from the ordinary. Courage, selfless service, and optimism are attributes of a hero that I strongly believe can lead and inspire the generations to come.
