The lack of freedom is a major reason why animals should not be kept in zoos. This shows to be accurate because studies have shown that lack of freedom can affect animals negatively. In the article, "Reason to Rethink Zoos" by Katherine Glosser, she states,"Animals deserve the same quality of life that humans have. I can't imagine being trapped in a fake habitat, never being allowed to roam outside and watching people staring and pointing at me through a glass window. If I don't want that fate, I am sure animals don't want that either"(2). This quote by Glosser basically summarizes what it feels like for an animal living in a zoo. How horrible it is to live in an environment that is fake with no freedom. Furthermore, the article continues
Zoos, rehabilitation institutions, and many other environmental centers provide opportunities for the public to witness animals that cannot be seen on a daily basis. Whether to keep animals in captivity is morally hard to decide, especially for me personally. In the essay, “Against Zoos,” by Dale Jamieson, he writes about the positives zoos provide, and then reiterates them; making positives turn into negatives. Jamieson makes statements about humans being superior over animals, and how we should not be thinking that we are better. We tend to take a lead role over other species, because of our “higher intelligence.” That should not mean that we treat wildlife as if they are something lower than us. In more ways than one, we as humans are
Think about having to live your whole life in a cage, where you are surrounded by people you are not familiar with. Would you like that? But this is how live is for animals in the zoos.
Some people may say that the zoo is the best place ever!,but i disagree with that. According to "zoo's connect us to the natural world's" by Michael Hutchins". In 2002 more than 140 million people go to the zoo everyday , but the don't know is that a zoo in Denmark had a giraffe and they killed it for no reason ,but the story behind it was " The giraffe went after the bread and right then the man shot it". The bad part about the whole thing was that when it had died they put it out where the zoo was and all though some people think that its good for there kids in my opinion its very bad ,because that's something that kids may love and its hard to sit there and watch them cut it open and show you . They were offered $ 7,000 dollars that away
Shouldn’t an animal have the right to freedom? Animals should not be forced into captivity. Zoos don’t allow their animals to have the same freedom like they do in the wild. Zoos are not appropriate for animal containment.
Zoos have a huge role to play in education and protection of our unsafe wildlife. In recent years, the importance of zoos has been recognized. They are a valuable benefit to our society because of the role they play in education and awareness for animals and the breeding programs that have formed to fight possible extinction. Due to the high standards of animal care zoos provide, I believe that we should have zoos.
Secondly, animals in zoos get mental problems which makes zoos not ethical. According to an article about Animal Rights, it states, "They are bored, unhappy, powerless, and a long way from home,"(Animal Rights Web Site). This is significant because it shows how an animal can feel depressed, which can lead to mental problems. According to "Animal Rights Web Site", animals in zoos get bored (Animal Rights Web Site). This proves that mental problems can be partially blamed for boredom, which animals feel when they are not stimulated enough. This is important because when animals become mentally deranged, problems arise and zoos become un-ethical.
The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction said Rachel Carson, who was a marine biologist. Zoos are miserable places for animals. In 2010, a CAPS(Captive Animals Protection Society). undercover investigator filmed sick animals being left untreated and dead animals to rot on the floors at Tweddle Farm Zoo. The animals tend to get stressed out and signs of this include pacing back and forth, rocking, and head bobbing. Animals shouldn't be kept in zoos because the zoos can't provide sufficient space for animals and the animals are not meant for our entertainment.
One reason I think animals should be released into the wild is the people that work at the zoo don't build them a normal habit by normal I mean may not be the right temperature or not good room. My evidence is polar bears live in the cold big atlantic at the zoo it's warm and small. I Also think they should make the habit bigger for the animals. Another fact is the zoo's enclosure is 1000 times smaller than the freedom they get in the wild. That's why i think animals should be free.
When you think of animals in a zoo, you think they are taken care of so well and that they are way better off in the zoo than in the wild. Have you ever considered that to animals the wild is just like us living a normal life in the country or city, and the zoo is like when we are trapped somewhere or in prison. Sure they don’t have to worry about where or when are they going to get the food and water because in the zoo it is just handed to them. That is why animals spend so many years adapting to do. Zoos deprive animals of many things that they were made to do and some of these things make the animals lives more enjoyable.
Example white tiger, who live only at zoos, not in wild nature. These individuals can not live in the wild, because people hunt them for money, their skin, medicine believe. Also poachers kill one tiger every day. And not only tigers, they hunt other animals too who have some body parts, what they can sell for money. And other good example is the European bison. This should be the cause why zoos are necessary. Probably does not exist many species on Earth if we did not have zoos. Maybe zoos are not necessary when all people are vegetarians, more environmentally friends, have more environmental groups and people hunt only when any species are too many. But it is not reality. When we want that all animals live in freedom, then we must to change the world a better place for
The article “ In defense of zoos: how captivity helps conservation” discusses how zoos are not actually bad for animals but quite the opposite. Zoos are stated to be helping conversation efforts in maintaining the population of certain species and protecting animals for all the negative issues faced in the wild. It also highlights that most of the animals including the gorilla Harambe was born in captivity and thus does not know that he was supposed to live somewhere in Central Africa but do to circumstances he was bred to help the species survive. Furthermore, the article talks about how zoos have to have a plan in place to benefit the animals before there approved to open there doors to the public. Thus, zoos aren't the enemy but a way to
One major reason why animals should not be kept in zoos is because it is bad for their mental health. According to a Current Events article, “Zoos are like prisons and zoos drive many animals crazy by confining them” (“Are Zoos Bad News”). This demonstrates that zoos are not good for animals’ mental health because they are
700 million people across the world visit zoos annually and over 10,000 zoos exist worldwide (The World Zoo Conservation Strategy). Wildlife parks and aquariums generate $5,136,250,000 each year in the United States alone (Encyclopedia Entry: Zoos). Millions of animals are held captive and live very different lives from their ancestors. The history of zoos shows that thousands of years ago, monarchs held animal’s captive to show power and wealth (Encyclopedic Entry: Zoos). Today, it can be argued that animals are used for entertainment value with some wildlife education, and that zoos protect and save animals from the wild. However, I will prove why zoos today are used for entertainment and how animals suffer both physically and mentally from the lack of freedom captivity imposes.
If someone tries to imagine one minute running freely on vast green terrain, then the next locked up in a cold, hard, cage, it would be hard. The imagery of a life like that is truly terrifying. The idea of a caged animal having to live like that is disgusting. Animals are suffering greatly from being locked away. When an animal is bought, traded, or given to a zoo, the animals rights are stripped away from them. They do not deserve that kind of lifestyle and should not have to live with it just because humans pay money to see it. No animal deserves the lifestyle of being caged and displayed at zoos.
There is more than meets the eye when you go to visit a zoo. Zoos are painted as a fun and cheerful place people all over the world love to go and visit; they are simply for entertainment. These animals that make the zoo possible are stripped of their freedom and value of life so they can be used for entertainment by hundreds of people daily. The animals are thought of more like couches; sitting and waiting to be moved around from place to place until we grow old of them and “throw them out”. Leaving zoos to have a negative effect on the well-being of animals.
