Reasons Why College Athletes Should Get Paid

College sports are a phenomenon that keeps viewers coming back for more. Stated in an article on Money Nation the NCAA makes an estimated $1 billion per year and this number is still growing. What really is insane is that all that money is made off of college athletes, who don’t get a penny from that total number. The debate on whether or not college athletes should be paid has been around for decades and probably will still be here for years to come. Paying college athletes would make the teams unfair, change how hard players will work to get better, affect the amateurism of college sports, and lastly influence the athlete's willingness to participate in college sports.

College athletes should be paid because of the hard work, dedication and effort they put into their respective sports. These athletes are a major source of income for their schools and they are not receiving a penny for it. These college athletes deserved to be paid, colleges are using these athletes to get money and they are never given anything but a pat on the back and a good job. College athletes work and train extremely hard to perform at the highest level possible. There are many pros for why they should get paid, but there are also many cons on why they should not get paid. The athletes should get paid because of how hard they work in season and the off-season. Do not pay all of the athletes, but pay the ones who are at a D1 college. The athletes should get paid because they put in the same amount of time as the pros do, and the pros get paid.

After numerous scandals over the past several years of college athletes receiving improper benefits, the question has come up whether or not college athletes should be paid or not. College sports are a growing industry, and we have seen money destroy organizations, teams, and players in this industry.  The determination and motivation of college athletes supersedes professional athletes by their will to win; therefore, college athletes should not be paid.

Some other reasons why college athletes should not get paid are because, if they were to get paid they may focus more on their sport rather than their school work and studies. Not only is trying to balance both school and sports hard enough but if they were to get paid they may not want to focus on what there actually there for, which is their education. Paying college athletes could also cause the student to have poor money management. The students may end up getting themselves in trouble more easily or fall into bad habits. Legal troubles are always an obstacle in which college students could fall into which could end there career. Another reason college athletes should not get paid is because with the big schools such has Alabama, Florida, Indiana, or Kentucky they would bring in more money compared to smaller schools such as Loyola

I was asked to conduct an interview with someone who had knowledge about my research topic, to help provide me with information. My research topic is whether college athletes should receive pay, therefore, I conducted an interview, over email, with one of my high school coaches Mike Zarger. Not only is Mike a coach, he was also a student athlete at Penn State University. Zarger was a phenomenal athlete himself, striving in both cross country and track. He is also a father of two girls that went to West Virginia University and the other went to Virginia Tech University to run cross country. I decided to conduct my interview with Zarger because he was a college athlete, a coach, and not to mention a parent of two college athletes himself.

Some may say student – athletes have it easy because they get to go to school for free and live the life of a college athlete when that is not the case in most situations. College athletes are in the business of marketing at a young age without playing professional sports which is a business. Which is why I believe student – athletes should be paid to play college sports. My reasons for this argument are that the student athlete may need spending money and money to support their families, secondly the schools along with their sport profits off of the students athletes names, and lastly for big events some student athletes are required to miss schools due to these events.

Do you enjoy watching a good game of college football on saturday afternoons? How would you feel if college sports turned into a business similar to the NFL or NBA? That is exactly what would happen if college athletes began to be paid for their talents. There are many other reasons college athletes should not be paid, for example, college athletes already receive compensation in the form of scholarships, each athlete could not be paid the same, and athletes should be focusing on school, not athletics.

One of the biggest controversial topics of modern day collegiate sports is deciding whether or not college student athletes should get paid. College athletes deserve to be paid due to the fact that they work all summer to get ready for the season. So, they have little to no free time to find a way to make money. The players are the main source of income for most NCAA schools. So it’s about time they get something in return for their hard work.

There has been a recent debate on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Many people believe they should get paid, but many others believe they should not be paid. College athletes should not be paid because the students should worry about their education, it is an extracurricular activity, and the Ncaa does not approve of it.

People think that college athletes should be paid because they work just as hard as the employees of the NFL, NBA and MLB. Another reason college athletes should get paid is that they don't just have their sport to worry about; they have to go to school.
