This portfolio is reaching its end and it is now time for me to start reflecting about my practicum period. Last year was a great year and a challenging one as well.
When the practicum period started I was lost, I did not know where to begin and what to do and it took me time to adapt to the new challenges I faced. Once I sat down and considered my options I began searching for schools to do the practicum. The city I live in has many disadvantages as far as education; on the one hand, English is not taught in kindergarten so I ended up teaching in a Language School during the kindergarten period; on the other, there are not many qualified English teachers and this resulted on very scarce feedback from the teachers who observed my lessons.
As time went by, things did not get easier; it took me three months to be accepted in the primary school because of some issues with the “Ministerio de Educación”. Luckily, I did not have such problems in the secondary school.
This portfolio helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. As regards my teaching skills is concerned, now that I re-read all the lesson plans I made, I can say that I made some progress. Firstly, I learn to create meaningful and effective contexts. As it can be seen in my firsts lesson plans contexts always caused me problems. At first I considered that using a course book was more than enough to create contexts, which is not the case. Course books are helpful inside the classroom but they need

The use of ICT, Information and Communication Technology. Technology would have helped me introduce topics, and students practice the language, innovative and appealing ways but this was not possible. Students did not have netbooks in the classroom, schools did not have Internet access, I did not have DVDs or videos to be brought to the classrooms and above all, my Internet connection did not allow me to download videos, as its speed is extremely
A portfolio is an organized, purposeful compilation of evidence documenting a child’s development and learning over time (McAfee, Leong, & Bodrova, 2016, p. 98). I thin k that implementing the Portfolio Plan would definitely contribute to the knowledge that I have already learned from my observation of Camden. After interviewing her mother and observing her, she seems to already be on a good path in her development and learning. I believe that some of the things that I have planned out on the Portfolio Plan would be very beneficial for her.
I completed portfolio #6 by determining and using effective approaches as well as rhetorical strategies when reading and writing. For example, I use rhetorical strategies when I had to read the e-text book. When I read, the class contract I had to determine what I had to do to pass the class. Lastly I had to use effective approaches when writing notes and when I used them to complete an essay.
This portfolio has show my progress in many different ways. The biggest way is my rhetorical knowledge has been increased because of the sources we have had to read especially in this last unit when we had to use the UW database. The scholarly articles and journals pushed my reading and analyzing to the limit, but it really helped me for the future. Because of my ability to analyze the sources well, it has helped me increase my writing, because I have been able to really find good credible quotes to use within my work.
While compiling this portfolio, it allowed me to reflect on the challenging work and the deep commitment that I have put forth to finish this degree. I cannot help but be proud of my accomplishments,
By working on this portfolio I have learned new resources that are useful to me now and in the future. For example, many reliable websites for scholarships, job offerings, and
For healthcare professionals it is important to have a portfolio and it is very important to keep it updated. Portfolios can be used for annual appraisals with an employer or can be used in preparation for a new job (Jasper, Elliot, & Koubel, 2011). Portfolios can be used as evidence of continuing professional development as it can hold important documents like certificates of completions for activities an individual has attended, show evidence of self directed learning, show evidence of the professionals continuing professional development documentation history, learning outcomes, personal development plans and superiors or prospective employers are able to see if the individual is up to date with all requirements (Jasper, Elliot, & Koubel,
Portfolios that are reviewed to gain greater understanding of a professional’s personal growth and development in his or her field can lend further insight to the understanding of philosophies and foundations in said field. Professionals who practice in a way that adheres to theoretical rationales can be believed to practice more thoroughly than those who do not understand the reasoning for what they do. A portfolio
Portfolios have been used to showcase the work of artists, fashion designers, models, photographers and architects, spanning several decades (M.Williams., K.Jordan., 2007) These career portfolios have been adopted in to the nursing profession where they serve as an augmentation but not a replacement of their curriculum vitae (Lettus, 2001). They have not only transcended beyond the traditional listing of basic information such as relevant past work experiences and positions held, educational institutions attended and achievements but provide additional information that resumes would have presented (M.J. Jone., 2007). A professional portfolio is a thoughtfully prepared and organised compilation of different types of professional information and evidence that illustrate an individual’s record of continuing professional development activities, skills, experiences, knowledge, competencies, professional achievements and goals as well as their level of expertise that one has attained as a result of their experiences.’ (Andre & Heartfield, 2011)The basic components of a professional portfolio include personal details, resume and documents such as certificates graduate transcripts, licensure, (Davis, 2015) professional organisation memberships, professional awards, annual performance appraisals, dates of promotions, recommendations from current or previous supervisors or employers, peers and others (Timmins & Duffy, 2011).
Another important aspect that I displace in the portfolio is the importance of research. Research is needed so that one can be a good decision. Throughout my time in the program, I always had to some research. This helped
Overall I feel disappointed because I feel there were so many times where I could have done something better or managed my time better. I think there were some times where I would make to many excuses and would procrastinate to the very last minute. I’m reflecting back on that and seeing how much more I could have accomplished if I saw this sooner. It’s like they say the start to fixing something is admitting there is something wrong. My strengths in English were analyzing a question and talking about or writing what I thought it meant and why. Also, another one of my strengths were thinking about what a person would say to counter claim my opinion. My weakness in English was explaining to others my beliefs
The first challenge I have already experienced in this practicum process is to define the project, since I was thinking about a project that would require more than the 4-8 weeks that we will have for the actual practicum experience. I think this could have been anticipated if since the beginning I had thought about every aspect that would be involved in my practicum, all of the stakeholders, the location, the time, and my resources from the beginning. But now that I have a more defined plan and a specific location, I am able to have a better idea of my plan, of the challenges I will face and of the assistance I will get through the partnership with CFHI.
My practicum classroom had 4 computers, 3 Ipads, and a smart bored. I got to help students using all three of these technologies. I used all three to help teach vocabulary to the students. The teacher used the black board also for math and vocabulary lessons. The teacher would use her
4. Plan well and systematically collect the contents. Our portfolio should showcase our accomplishments. It can include teaching philosophy, cover letter, resume, college transcripts, copies of teaching credentials, recommendation letters and lesson plans other course materials we’ve developed.
During my spring rotation at Peine Ridge Elementary, I have learned an immense amount of new information. This particular placement was different from my last itinerant roles due to the fact that it was a site based position. Paula Mathias, my cooperating teacher, sees two fifth grade girls in the morning at Peine Ridge Elementary and then travels to different schools in the afternoon. So that being said, most of my practicum experience was with fifth grade. Each student had a different type and degree of hearing loss. K.S has a moderate, conductive hearing loss and wears bilateral hearing aids, while S.B has a profound, sensorineural hearing loss and wears bilateral cochlear implants. Throughout my experience at Peine, I have summed up five
As I write this reflection on Thanksgiving break it shows me that I am thankful for this opportunity to complete this practicum. Throughout this experience, it has put me out of my comfort zone. I learned at a summer conference that if you are comfortable in what you are doing you are not learning. Well, I have been extremely uncomfortable all while learning a plethora of new knowledge. This practicum has let me experience new committees and helped me in finding my voice. The tool created by John Driscoll: “What? ‘So What?’ and “Now What?’ was a great model to use throughout the practicum. It guided me and helped me put all of the work into an organized format from which I can help myself learn even more.
