BACKGROUND Community service is a voluntary work that its primary focus is to provide back to the society and working to help and uplift a positive community. This community service course gives students the opportunity to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most in the community in which it builds a relationship between us the students and the community. The main aim of this community service course is to make students not to forget or neglect the community that is around them and show or teach them how to respect what it is they have and appreciate life as well as view life from a different angel from other people’s perspectives of which is their normal everyday life. I got the joy to work with Total Rehab Center which is located at Kasarani in Nairobi County. Total Rehab is a non-profitable community based organization registered with the ministry of sports activities, gender, culture and social services. It specifically focuses on enhancing the welfare of disabled kids with intellectual mental disabilities to achieve their optimum independence as they are integrated into the society. Total rehab mission is to empower disabled youngsters to most effective overall performance in their everyday activities via provision of great care and rehabilitation, where as its vision is to be a leading rehabilitative center that empowers disabled youngsters with vital skills and know-how that will enhance their quality of life. The community service that I had done was, I worked with the High School Wilderness Club during the events that they do for Hamburg and surrounding areas. For most of the events I helped out by setting and cleaning up the trash cans, barricades and signs that had to be put out before and after the events, and during the events I would work by making sure the trash cans were not getting too full or just to make sure that everything was running smoothly. I chose this work because I am a member of the Wilderness Club and had originally only joined the club because of all the fun things they do throughout the year. After being told that I had to do community service to go on the fun trips, I said why not, if I want to do the fun things, then I guess I’ll have to do the work involved. I hoped to learn the different values of the community and also to get to know more people in the school and community. All of the work that I had done was with groups of people, so that gave me the opportunity to make new friends and get to know them better. I also hoped to learn that just because you are doing work does not mean that it will be boring. Every time I was working I always had fun, and it was a quite enjoyable time. I went into the project thinking I just have to do this to get it over with so I can graduate, but I ended up to really enjoy what I had to do.
What makes you genuinely feel good with yourself? Is it organizing your room, cooking in the kitchen or, participating in your favorite hobby? For me, it’s doing a community service that reaches out and helps others with any problems that they face. My family has always influenced me to participate in different community services to be involved with the community, increase my positivity and to become a great role model for my younger sister, which did rub off as she now volunteers in service. As I progress through my life, I realized that being a humanitarian is needed as a sense of positivity in my life and it also increases my social skills.
Our group, which consisted of Ricardo Carrillo, Emilee Cocuzzo, Sidd Dogra, Wurood Mandawi, and Trung Ngo, worked collectively on putting on a successful bingo and bake sale night for the YMCA. We ended up raising $ to help with the teenagers of the YMCA to go on their annual college trip during the summer.
During the spring semester of 2015, I took the Service-Learning course in psychology (Psych 410). The general structure of this course included attending a 70 minutes long class on Mondays and Wednesdays to learn about service learning from the psychology field perspectives, reading scientific articles, conducting literature reviews to broaden my understanding of the subject, and in class constructive discussions with my colleagues. The course required 50 hours of community service at any local organizations or schools. From February 24 to May 8, I volunteered at the Arc of southern Maryland, an organization that provides residential services for individuals with intellectual disability. This organization has several homes in the Leonardtown area. Each home has four to five residents that are grouped based on the developmental disability conditions. As part of the class, I was required to write eight reflection papers about my volunteer site visits that were minimum of one page. Additionally, the class required me to develop a hypothetical program that would be beneficial for the individuals that I worked with.
Volunteerism is a path to responsible citizenship. Volunteering is a form of generous behavior, with a goal of providing help to others, a group, an organization, a cause, or the community at large without expectation of accolades or material reward (Musick, 2008, p 3). Volunteer work encourages good citizenship. It builds trust with others and public institutions. Trusting people are more likely to get involved in leadership positions or even politics. It gets individuals involved by letting them meet a wider range of people, then learning more about local issues and legislation. Volunteer work teaches civic skills, which can then be used in the political arena, and help individuals become aware of social problems needing solutions (p 460-461).
Service was really good apart from them forgetting about our bread on the table until our starters had came out we noticed this because everyone else had had there bread before the starters and we never. They served everything really well they never leaned over anyone to serve someone else even though the chairs were close to the window the still managed to get round them to serve them the food. You could tell they had a lot of training and experience with this because they done everything wonderfully. They were also good at keeping a eye on how full peoples glasses were and if they were nearly empty the came and filled it up. The silver served each course and explained what was in each one.
I entered the restaurant at 7:27 pm and went straight to the restroom, someone was occupying the restaurant so I decided to get in line at 7:28 pm there was 5 customer's ahead of me in line to order. I notice a lady left the bathroom, so I exited the line for ordering and went to the restroom. The bathroom was clean, well stocked with tissue, napkins and the trash was low as if it had been emptied, there was no paper or debris on the floor and the mirror was clean with no smears. I exited the restroom and reentered the line to order at 7:30 pm. I approached the counter and Anjanetta said, "my I placed your order," I ask Anjanette for the current specials and she mention the $5.00 box and I said I would like that, she ask me what piece of meet
I graduated BS in Human Services at Gwynedd Mercy University. As a Human Service, students were taught and expected to have gained the ability to relate to individuals at multiple levels. Students were expected to be able to articulate sociological and psychological theory and be able to apply these theories in understanding individuals and society.
Coming in this semester this was one of only two classes I decided to take. I had never take any classes with ODU and want to “get my feet wet”. I can honestly say that if all my classes run as smoothly as this class has I will have no problem completing my Human Service degree.
Within the Service Learning Project, I have learned quite a few things. I have learned that I know a lot more about history then I ever imagined I knew. I can explain events and facts than ever before, but most importantly I learned that the government and society begins with myself. I have a duty and role within Society and the United States government to act morally and defend our nation.
As a 17-year-old senior at Bessemer City High, I am truly honored to have a chance to apply for the Ora H. Foster community Service Scholarship. Growing up I have always had a passion for community service. I love the feeling of helping others, without expecting anything in return. For about 2 years now, I have been involved in a number of clubs and community activities. I am involved SGA (Student Government Association), Beta Club, and National Technical Honors at my school, and have done volunteer work for councilmen Cynthia S. Donald. Whenever I am available, I try to be a part of any community service project activities in or outside of school. I also hold down a part-time job at Zaxbys as a cook, where I have an opportunity to learn
My placement for Community Service -Learning is within a local Waterloo public school. It is located just outside the university area of Waterloo and is part of the Waterloo Region District School Board. This public school has approximately one-hundred and eighty students enrolled in Junior Kindergarten to grade six. This institution is about student achievement and well being. This school values academic standards and the growth of discipline along with creativity. Students develop a skill-set that prepares them to attend a secondary and then post-secondary path of study. Public school gives a student a foundation for learning and social involvement within the larger community.
It is interesting that you brought up the programs that assist with homeless students on campus. I spoke with one of the Texas Workforce representatives a few weeks ago and she informed me about many programs that give homeless youth the opportunity to “drop by” when they are in need of a temporary place to go during the day. Although these services are limited they are very beneficial for those students struggling with finding a place to go in between school and where they call “home”.
In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma.
