Writing is definitely not my strongest subject in school I’ve struggled with it since elementary school. When I was told that I would have to take this class, composition 100, I started to worry a little bit given the main purpose of the class is to write. Now that the class is nearly over looking back on it I have gained some writing techniques and a few other techniques along the way. Until I took this class, my teacher for the most part choose the topics I would be writing about in high school. For most of this class I did the same thing; I would choose the topic that Professor Doughty went over in class. So for the first essay, explaining others’ arguments, I choose to write about Fukuoka’s article “Living on Bread Alone.” The sole reason for writing about Fukuoka’s article was because Professor Doughty spent a class taking about it and going over in depth what Fukuoka was talking about. This gave me more ideas than I would be able to generate myself so I thought it would be smart to write about it. On the second essay I choose to write about myself; it allowed me to have some use more personal information rather than talk about another book. Once again on third essay I went with a topic that the class had discussed in class. It was about industrial farming, there is no real reason connection I have to this topic other than I grew in upstate and there are farms near my house. But I choose the topic because the class talked about it and it gave me ideas about industrial farming that are more in-depth than I could think of myself. For the final essay I wrote about obesity and the relationship it has with fast food. I choose this topic because it can relate to everyone; everyone knows someone who is obese and has ate at a fast food restaurant. Also, this topic allowed me to apply some information about my major, business economics, into it. So around half the time I used a topic that was already talked about in class and the if not than I wrote about something that was relevant to me. One of the main things I struggle with in writing is generating ideas and development of these ideas in the paper. So before I cam to this class I never had a set strategy to start off writing a paper I kind of just sat down
The first few years of college student’s lives are not necessarily the most enjoyable time, having to take the basic core classes. Unless someone is planning on getting their degree in something that involves the basic core classes like; Math, Psychology, any Humanities, or English. English has not been my strong suit and I know that I still have work that needs to be done to make me a better writer, but I believe that I was able to meet and achieve the goals and requirements of this Composition two class.
Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life.
In, high school my teachers assign me with different kinds of reading and writing. The types reading that i remember is the Killing Mocking Bird and The Adventure of Odysseus in freshman year of highschool. I didn't like the two book that much. Next the types of writing i recall writing is an observation poem in my english writing class i had to observe an thing and write at least five line poems using the four key items(see, hear, feel, and think). I had to write a lot summaries on articles and writing prompts in four years in secondary school. Also, i did a reflection essay where i had created an claim, counterclaim, evidence, rebuttal, TAG (title, Author, and Genre) of information and quote of one of the scenes in the story of Shakespeare Hamlet before i start my reflection writing.
Think about your experiences of writing at college. Which types of assignments have you found helpful in strengthening your writing skills? Where do you want to improve your writing? What’s the most useful advice you’re received that’s helped you improve your writing. Be as specific as possible.
As a writer, I find myself getting lost. Typically, when I go to start writing I hit a brick wall. It’s as if all my thoughts suddenly escape my mind and I draw a blank. It takes me forever to conjure up some form of a thesis and then takes even longer to figure out what I should write to support it in a way that makes sense. Then, attempting to find a way to organize my ideas and put them together in cohesive paragraphs seems like an impossible task in the moment. It is not uncommon for me to get flustered and just throw something down on the paper because I get anxious seeing how much work is left to do. If I end up going back to read it over prior to submission,
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
Finding your own writing process is crucial for a writer in order to write a successful paper. Everyone is unique and everyone’s writing process is going to be unique as well. A writer’s notebook is a perfect way for people to record random thoughts, dialogue you hear, and any other ideas you might hear. Brainstorming is a key technique to get started when composing a paper. Brainstorming allows you to think of different topics that would fulfill the requirements needed on your topic assigned. Freewriting, clustering, listing and outlining, and collaborating are also some other techniques that when practiced could come very useful when writing a paper. Having the ability to use either of these five techniques would help tremendously when composing a paper.
A community college is a great stepping stone for students who are on a budget and plan to obtain a degree higher than an Associates. As my career choice, Nurse Practitioner, requires a Master’s degree I am looking at many more years of classes and a lot more financial burden than that of an a registered nurse at the Associate degree level. In this paper I will explain why I have decided to take this course now, what my expectations are of this course, what I hope to gain from the experience, what I would like to read and write about based on my career path, and what some possible issues associated with my chosen career path are.
As a high school student taking on a college course, I acknowledged and accepted the challenge that lay ahead of me. The main reason I selected Composition I and II was that it allowed me to vastly improve my overall writing skills. Developing my techniques will benefit me when I am required to compose any writing assignments for my future college classes. Therefore, with that goal in mind, I chose to take this class while still attending high school. I began this class as an average writer; additionally, I did not know the majority of the writing rules or how to make an essay meet its potential. Over the course of these two classes, I believe that I have proven my writing to be more seamless and interesting to read.
During this semester, I learned more about writing than I have throughout my whole high school career. The first thing we really covered was parallelism and that was probably the most used topic in all of our writing. To be completely honest I think this was the first time I had ever heard about parallelism and I still have no idea how to use it. We really focused on comma placement because in the beginning we were all just putting commas in random places, but now I feel as a whole we learned how to use them much more efficiently. We covered semicolons and where to place them, but still do not know how to use them either. During this semester I definitely improved my writing based on the fact that we wrote a ton, but I do not think my writing techniques have improved as much as I would’ve liked them to.
My past experiences with writing have been the many times I practiced improving how I brainstormed my essays throughout high school. What I have enjoyed about writing during those experiences was gathering various examples from literature, culture, or personal experiences, and connecting them together to form the main idea for my essays. What has been less enjoyable about writing essays is trying to form from a blank slate about what the overall message of my essay will be.
It seems that every writer sat down and just stared at a blank sheet of paper or at a blank screen on their laptop. At that moment writers are trying to processes the materials in their head and trying to figure out how to start writing or typing a well organize essay. As one of those writers, I have trouble starting my essays, I prefer to be in a quiet area to process my thoughts, and before I start writing I prefer to make an outline to make my essay a lot easier.
Writing is way that we can express ourselves, it is a way to interface ideas and thoughts and to prove a point. Throughout my writing experience or process I have struggled with writing especially using details or really expressing myself my work. In this course Facts & Fiction: Portraits in World Art I expect to gain more knowledge on how to write a perfect essay, story, letter, and assignment. I expect to learn new genres and rhetorical situations. I also think my writing will improve academically and I will develop my skills in writing. Also taking my writing to a different point of view, level, and writing something different rather than the usual. I look forward to getting feedback from my peers and learning their thoughts on my writing and how they can help me improve.
My writing skills are decent, if I take the time to fully process my thoughts. When it is a timed assignment or test, my skills go right out the window, I concentrate more on answering the prompt rather than the grammar, punctuation, or structure. It’s like a jumbled mess of writing filled with lots of errors. When I’m writing my main goals are to answer the prompt, have good structure, and no grammatical or punctuation errors. These goals sometimes get in the way of me expressing myself freely; if a sentence doesn’t flow right with rest of the paragraph, I will re-examine my paragraph or paper to see if I can conjure up a sentence to finish out my paragraph before moving on to the next paragraph. Another example is if I feel like I don’t
As my first semester comes to a close, during this time I have obtained many new techniques and refreshed some old ones as well. I have grown a substantial amount in my writing and as a person from engaging myself in this course. Filled with excitement and reckless nerves, college was a new beginning for me and many others. Hearing all the stories and advice that people gave me it, really made me create a sense of what was expected to happen. My first class of the semester was EH 106 early in the morning. From the time, we entered to the time we left that’s when I realized everything got serious. On the first day of class, we received a thick syllabus with everything that we would be going over in the class. From the code of conduct to
