(2) Class specifics: Examples- What was the most interesting, most enjoyable, and/or most important part of the class to you personally? What do you feel you excelled in the most? Describe the event or give an example. How did the class help you work toward your future educational and career goals? I had a blast with the projects we did, because I got a chance to think of new, off the wall solutions. I feel that I did well working with groups, because I liked to lead a lot of the project, but also tried to incorporate ideas from everyone. For example, in POE when we did the playground project, I had all sorts of concepts that I wanted to include but, we tried to incorporate everyone’s suggestions. Both classes really reinforce the idea of …show more content…
(6) Activities outside of school: Outside of school I participate in NHS. Currently I am tutoring high school aged students twice a week. In the past I have done other things such as relay for life, trash pickup, clothing drives, and volunteering at school events. Another activity I was very involved with was the Faith in Flint program. Last year, Father Gabriel Richard high school had a group that took various supplies to families in Flint who were in need. Not only did we bring things, we spent time talking with the people and playing with the kids. I found out about the event through NHS, but ended up falling in love with the program and continued to do it though I did not need the service hours. In addition to NHS, I worked for US Fabrication and design. In the summer of 2016 I restored old pickup trucks and repaired cars with my friend and a mechanic who works for the shop. Bringing these awesome vehicles back to life was not only very fun, but I learned a lot I did not know about cars. This past summer I worked at the same company, only this time in the assembly shop full time. We built different pieces of equipment for the assembly lines of Ford, GM, and Chrysler. I learned how to read blueprints, use an angle grinder Ford hosts a High School Science and Technology program for STEM students, and I have been attending this event once a month since 2014.
(7) Education and career goals: Be specific and tell me what
When I'm not in school I have Since my freshman year I have been doing marching band. As a sophomore I took my position as a upperclassman to help my freshman to the best of my ability. I help the freshman in my section to read drill, marching techniques, and how to play the music. While doing that I also do activities with my Girl Scout troop. I have been in Girl Scouts since the 4th grade and that has been a wonderful learning experience. From learning the ways of sales, to taking educational trips around the state i have grown in skill and character. Also for the last 3 years I have been the 2nd in highest cookie sales so that has been been very beneficial. Then during the summer I volunteer at the Durham Art's Council's Summer Camp as
I have been in a few school activities. One of the main activities that I have been involved in is Color guard. Since my sophomore year, I have been on the guard and participating in all of the competitions with the band. It is a great way to get involved, make new friends, and create new experiences. I am also in my school’s National Honor Society which is an organization that consists of the top academic scholars. We do volunteer work and do activities that display integrity. We have done blood drives as well as packaged food for Kids Against Hunger. That is another organization that people can do to help package food for children across seas that don’t have any source of nourishment. I am an active thespian which is a group of sorts that is dedicated to the fine arts. I have been one since my freshmen year and have been either stage manager or assistant stage manager for two plays and three musicals. My junior year as well as this year I was involved in National
Freshman year during my lunch period, I had decided to participate in technology squad to assist those unfamiliar with software applications such as PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Google Docs. Also I was responsible to assign laptops out to students who needed them. When I heard of EMT Club, I automatically joined because I wanted to learn more on what it takes to become an EMT. I handed out candy grams to raise money for the ambulance corps and got to listen to current medical technicians that provided an overview of their responsibilities. In addition I attended a first aid class and got certified, so I can lend a helping hand in an emergency. Outside of school in the Fair Lawn Jewish Center Religious School, I helped students learn the hebrew alphabet and planned activities that would keep them engaged.
One school related activity that shows my eagerness to serve others in my school is the Autism Awareness fundraiser for Drama Club. We went around the school and around the community and raised money for a family with a son with autism. With the money we went and bought a sleeping bag and a teddy bear to help the boy sleep, and few toys just for him to enjoy . I helped acquire a large amount of money for donation. The fundraiser went from March 13-17th, lasted the whole school day
During my last two years here at Lynch Public School I have had a busy and interesting time. The one extracurricular activity that I was included in was the dance team. I was apart of the fall and spring dance team last year and this year I was apart of the fall team. During the week I work at a local restaurant in Bristow Nebraska. I start work at 6 and work till 9 and every Friday I start at 5 and work till 9:30. Community service activities consist of me helping my grandma at are local church. She is involved in the cleaning of the church and making sure all the linens are cleaned. Whenever there is a funeral held in town I help with the making of the sandwiches that are provided from the Catholic Church women. Every year the post prom parents
Overall, this is a verifiable piece that says a lot about education and the small ways that certain trends and assumptions can end up inadvertently hurting students.
I’ve been able to connect my civic engagement work with our discussions in prosem mostly through our conversations about education and the intersection of immigration and education. All of the kids I worked with at Moder Patshala were either immigrants themselves, or were the children of newly arrived immigrants, and with that, they were low income and/or first-generation students in the US. This highly overlaps with the presentations we did on education: one intersecting with low income students and the other with English language learners. From these discussions, I’ve been able to develop how to better support the students I worked with who were still learning English. The conversations around certain classroom situations and how you should react were really interesting and got me thinking about my strategies for supporting the students I worked with, which was beneficial for my work, the student’s education, and our relationship. A lot of times when there is a language barrier, a student will get very frustrated and I was able to think critically about how to more visibility show my patience and encourage the student through the process. In terms of FGLI students, I had never really thought about the importance in verbalizing that I was a FGLI student too. I had always tried to not mention the fact I was from Penn, because I didn’t want there to be this power dynamic between the student and I and also between me and the tutors from other schools. But I learned that
I come from a country where houses are made by hand and people are made by their social class. Being born and raised in Uzbekistan, I have learned many life lessons. Growing up, I was the only child of my mother who raised me alone while she worked two jobs and studied to complete her doctorate in psychology. My mother lived every day with courage, strength, integrity, humility, and determination, paving the perfect example for her son. Being young, I did not understand the depravity with which people in Uzbekistan lived their daily lives; however, looking back I appreciate the hard work my mother put into every aspect of our lives to give me the opportunities I have today. Both disparity and hardship fall onto the hardest workers because of the injustices riddling the social infrastructure: some of the brightest minds were held to lower status jobs whereas less skilled individuals climbed the social ladder on their fathers’ backs. My mother fought through these inequities with me at her side to bring us into a better life.

According to Dr. Patricia Alexander teaching and learning are interrelated. Teachers and students learn at the same time. As Dr. Alexander mentions in the video that actions and characteristics of one affect the other. For example, if a teacher in a classroom is not preview prepare for class, students will lose interest in the class. Students have to perceive that the teacher is mentally and intellectually well prepare in order to show some interest in the class. One of my teacher’s actions affected me when I was in middle school. I remember that when I was in 7th grade one of my teachers used to say to his students that they are very dumb to learn. I as student felt like I really was dumb. Even though, I tried to learn everything he taught us, I did not retain any information. As a result, my grades dropped a lot, so I refused to go to that school until my mother moved me to another school. In the other hand, if there are students that do not show any interest in learning, teachers’ performance is affected. For example, there is anything a teacher can do when a student does not really want to learn. Some teachers use a variety of strategies without any result of learning, but is does not mean that the teacher is not well prepare; it is more about what the student want. Dr. Alexander also mentions in the video that the factors that determine success are the same for teachers and students. I believed that it is connected because teachers and students are in constant
“Education,” is one of many words that in my opinion cannot be accurately defined rather it varies person to person through culture, community, experience, and social background. For me, education through high school and later to be continued in college or at a university was a number one priority in my house growing up. While it was not a direct part of my culture to be successful in school or even in my community, (in fact you will learn it is quite the opposite of my community standards) it was directly a part of my families background and mother’s personal experience that I was destined to be successful in her eyes of the education realm the day I was born.
I thought that the mother of Chante made this presentation very beneficial. She was unique and helpful because she was honest. I grew up not having much experience with disabilities as well. So, I could imagine how uneasy it must have felt to learn that your child has a disability. I really enjoyed how honest she was, she admitted that at first, she was very angry about it. She did not pretend that everything was okay as a lot of parents probably would have. I also was very interested in her transformation on her views of her daughter that she shared. I thought that it was intriguing how she thought that she would cover up Chante’s disability with a clean face, pretty clothes, and nice hair. But once she actually gave birth to Chante she realized that her priority was not Chante’s appearance. She was more concerned about making sure her child would live throughout the night. Lastly, I enjoyed the fact that she brought up the fact that she was in denial about Chante’s ability. It brought to my attention that as a future teacher, even though it may be easier for me to accept that some children will need alternative classrooms, it may not always be easy for the parent to accept this.
My past experience of learning to drive was extremely positive. I didn’t suffer anxiety and was able to pass my driving test. My previous driving instructor was very clear with instructions, supportive, patient and offered positive reinforcement throughout my experience. My teacher said I was a capable learner that showed courage, this feedback gave me faith and motivation to learn to drive a manual.
In life there are many things that are important to us, but education is one of the most essential tools that can open doors to reach everything that we as human beings consider valuable in this world. The life event that we were experiencing were formed by how better education qualification we have made that create better social status in our life. Education is “a manifest function with an intended purpose of social instruction. It is a basic component of society that fulfills an essential need. It intendeds to transmit skills and knowledge to members of that society to help them become productive. Education produces an obedient workforce, delay entry of youth into the labor market and squashes creativity and critical thinking” (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum, and Carr, 2014, P. A11). Furthermore, social status is social identity recognized as meaningful within the social system. Social status carries expectation, rights and responsibilities, some we have at birth, other we attain over the life course. I will describe my experiences in the education system in order to help my audience understand hidden curriculum and stratification are part of the several social institutions. Social institution contains interrelated set of norms, values, beliefs, and practices, it maintains and perpetuates by our participation in them preserve tradition. In addition, social institutions are subject to change when they become outmoded, inefficient, or unresponsive.
In this class we have often talked about choices parents make, that affect their children. While I do not condone coming to America illegally, I do not believe that this would effect my teaching. Personally, as an educator, I do not think that it is my place to judge a child, or his family’s legal status. My main objective is to grow my students minds, and help them to be better people. I desire for my students to be knowledgeable, and kind. This vision expands across all races, and cultures. According to,THE HUMAN FACE OF IMMIGRATION,“It’s not long before their consensus is clear: Legal immigrants are good, model residents; “illegals” are very bad.” Most of the country has this belief now. I think that it is important as educators, to broaden our students minds, and help them see that all cultures, and races should be accepted not only in our school, but in our country. Even if you don’t support people coming into the country illegally, there should be a respect for all people. Additionally, EVERY STUDENT should feel safe, comfortable, and accepted in their school. I think this applies to the students, and teachers. I also think the term “illegals” definitely gives immigrants a bad connotation, but I do not think that the issue of people entering the country illegally should be ignored. I think that it is a lose, lose, situation. This issue needs to be discussed, and whatever being said is going to hurt, or offend, someone.
