Reflection Paper On Children In Foster Care

ARE THEY SAFE THERE?
Reflection paper

Children in the foster care system are far more often being abused than what the public eye can see. Prior to reading this I would have never thought that I would be so emotionally attached and make connections to the maltreatment of children in foster care. I believe there ought to be a deeper consideration as to what is happening in foster homes. Who is really taking guardianship of children?
In a recent article, I read the story of two siblings in a foster home who had been starved by their guardians and were malnourished. These children were in grade school, yet they weighed the same as toddlers. These children had been victims of famine which not only stunted their physical development, but the mental development had been severely affected. The worst part about the case is that the people who are supposed to care, i.e. caseworkers, supervisors etc. paid no attention to the complaints and red flags set out by multiple professionals. Physicians had determined the children suffered from chronic starvation, yet the caseworker ignored it (Oregonian). This story bought a tightness around my heart because even when you look at the data children in foster care are subject to maltreatment is about 0 to1.34% (Cohen). These numbers do not seem accurate, because the figures come from child welfare’s own investigations of child abuse. Child welfare agencies have a strong hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil incentive about themselves
