My impression about writing before taking this course were that I will like it. Because I like to write even though I am an English as Second Language learner (ESL). I have always a desire to write a good paper. I know, it does need skill and not easy. Then, I learned from this course Rhetorical Appeals. I learned that ethos, pathos and logos are important in identifying the writer’s speech.
In my first Rhetorical essay, I wrote about one of my favorite President of the United States of America memorable speech for the nation. It was interesting to put what I learn into the assignment, but with few of my other mistakes, and my word software automatic spell-check was turn on and did not correct the misspelled word . . .Thus, the outcome was
Logos, pathos, and ethos have been existing to empower and strengthen our writing. In this rhetorical analysis essay, logos, pathos, and ethos that are used in the Annual Address will be clearly identified and evaluated. The Annual Address written by Joseph Jackson discusses the issues of discrimination and racism. It was written and delivered at the 84th Annual Session of the National Baptist Movement. Unlike many others back in history, Jackson believes that actions should be taken place before any demanded result. Jackson appeals to his fellow race to take action and adds credibility to his claims by using historical examples from the past. Also, Jackson makes personal connections with his targeted audience, black people, which builds trust between the speaker and the reader. We will be examining the context of the this speech and Jackson’s perspective and claims.
This course was comprised of many learning activities; each was designed to help me achieve the course learning outcomes. I have taken two college English classes in the past; however, it has been several years since my last college class. I have some experience in writing and this class definitely helped me get back into writing. I often have trouble brainstorming and capturing the subject I need to write about. This class definitely helped me overcome the challenges I faced in writing and being able to effectively express my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Not to mention, it definitely helped build my writing foundation through a step by step approach to each assignment. Therefore, this class bolstered my writing and communication skills.
Moreover, I consider homework assignments and activities in this course to be helpful. They have enhanced my writing skills, as I know how to write a story, a scenario, and how to support my argument. Frankly speaking, English writing must be my weakest point. However, due to our professor, all instructions were given in a precise manner and I could understand all tasks.
For the peer review when you said to indicate where there are mechanical errors, how did you want us to do that? Did you want us to mark up our partners papers and attach that to the bottom of the review, or was there another way you wanted it done?
I’m looking forward to speaker day today because the junior class came up with an excellent speaker to represent their class his year. The presentation started off great, Dr. William Morse came right on time to speak in front of the whole school about adolescent sexuality. I thought it was cool that Miles dad knew someone with this area of expertise and was willing to give a speech. I came into the gym at exactly noon and greeted the senior class speaker which happed to be a former Alabama attorney general. Then I went over to greet Dr. Morse. When it was time to start I went directly behind the podium and gave my spiel about how the students would greatly benefit from both of the speakers today and then I introduced Dr. Morse to the students.
Glancing at the heading you may be wondering ‘what is rhetoric?’ Is it Ethos? Is it a question that is not answered or a type of persuasion? For the most part, rhetoric is a word that we may not use in our everyday language, but we utilize it religiously; we have practiced this skill in our everyday life since we were young. Rhetoric is actually communication. Every time you write a paper, every time you create a text, and every time you have a verbal conversation, rhetoric is being applied. The formal definition of rhetoric is, "the study of how humans use language and other symbols to influence attitudes, beliefs, and actions for other"(Ramage, et al. 16). It is used in many forms: texting, symbols, and word choice; rhetoric can also be divided
Attitude: Writing has never been my thing, at least when it comes to essays and research papers. It can take me awhile to get my ideas flowing. I’m very excited to complete this course so I can become a better writer. Although I often don’t like writing research papers or essays, I don’t feel that any personal feelings towards writing will have any negative effects on my quality of work. I’m looking forward to what this course has to teach me.
Given that Young is suggesting to her audience, the Belizean people to take action instead of reacting and waiting for the Government to save Belize, she makes very good use of a number of rhetorical strategies. Firstly, the author divided the article into heading and subheadings to allow readers to understand what happened on each event. For example, part II has three subheadings, the 20k strong, this is not your great-grandmother’s (or your grandmother’s) Belize, and to be or not to be. Each of these discussing different view. Her second successful strategy is the many use of facts (logos), with regards to Belizean knowing how to organize and mobilize action. For example, citizens came to support the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) in

In this course, I enhanced my reading and writing skills. Reading and analyzing stories allowed me to become a better critical thinker. Beside, Learning to review and identify errors with the help of my peers and my instructor improved the quality of my writing. Also, I gained valuable practice in evaluating the credibility of sources that I would include in my writing. Finally, I also want to thank this class since I become more confident in my writing and my reading abilities
After much thought, I came to the conclusion that there was not just one significant learning experience from this course. I enjoyed the variety of readings and the conversations with classmates. Developing papers to convey my thoughts and provide supporting evidence, has helped me become a better writer. Though, I am far from being a superb writer, this course provided the opportunity to further develop my writing skills.
When I began this writing course, I was asked what I hoped to accomplish. I even wrote a reflective essay as a journal entry on the topic. Looking back at the essay and reading it again, I am struck by how much I have learned in such a brief time span. My initial concerns were surrounded in a perceived fear of academia. I was insecure in my ability to convey thoughts in a structured academic format. I still take time to consider these concerns. However, this course boosted my confidence in my ability to learn to write academically, and effectively.
The word rhetoric can be defined as the ability to use certain writing techniques such as word choice and flow to create a specific emotion/mood within a reader that often causes them to do something the author intends. Rhetoric is often related to persuasion. I remember discussing rhetoric and the categories of it (ethos, pathos and logos) in high school however, I do not remember everything about them. I remember that ethos relates to the credibility, pathos relates to emotions and logos relate to the logic. I know that rhetoric tools are what helps drive how a paper is written. More specifically, the tools are what help structure the paper and determine the tone/mood the author uses. These tools are used to help make a paper more effective
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, rhetoric is “the art of speaking or writing effectively: such as… a: the study of principals and rules of composition formulated by critics of ancient times… b: the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion,” (“Rhetoric.” Merriam-Webster). I think that rhetoric means trying to get a point across in an efficient and effective way. There are many uses of rhetoric including as a scope, civic art, course of study, or knowledge (“Rhetoric - Examples and Definition of Rhetoric.”). Since ancient times, the scope of rhetoric has been debated. Some scholars believe rhetoric is limited to the specific realm of political discourse, but modern scholars believe it encompasses every
Tone, engages your audience in an inviting manner that makes them willing to hear your message. Therefore, tone, is everything when we interact with others. In our everyday lives, our tone shifts several times throughout our day. We speak to everyone, in different rhetorical situations in a certain kind of tone. You would not speak to your parents, grandparents, or even just your boss, the way that you would speak to your younger siblings, or perhaps, even your enemy. Many people question why our tone changes, why we can’t just be our true selves ALL THE TIME! The reality is, we have to hold a certain level of respect to ourselves, and know the authority or position in society that others around us have obtained.
