Throughout English 1010 thus far, I can certainly say that my writing skills have been tested and tried. Writing for fun and composing rhetorical essays for a college-level English class are vastly different styles and require contrasting attitudes, voices, and points of view for each. Before writing essays of the former diction, I must admit that I did not understand the rhetorical strategies and had no idea there even was a rhetorical triangle. The assignments included in this portfolio show the advancements I have made in my writing with an academic tone.

My day one writing process wasn't much of an effective process, it was mainly just meeting page requirements by adding a ton of filler information. this was not a good process because it takes away from the purpose of the paper and makes it a lot more difficult to capture the readers attention. taking this six week course has improved my writing process.

I believe it is important for any student who wants to succeed in class to take a step back and self-evaluate themselves in their work. To be the best, a learner should be able to determine how he or she is progressing and in what steps that person can take to improve his or her writing skills. Every writer encounters setbacks in their work, when this happens the student should know which resources are available for their assistance. I have used these methods and have discovered that I have matured quite a bit in my writing, in just a matter of a few weeks.
During my first semester attending Auburn University, I took an English Composition class. This course taught me many things not only about necessary writing skills, but also many things about myself. The class also showed me how important it is to research and embrace unfamiliar subcultures and communities. English Composition required me to produce three papers –two of them I am very proud of. Throughout the course of writing each assignment, I developed a connection with the subject matter of each piece. I believe I have learned what is expected of a college level writer. All of the skills I have acquired from this course have molded me into an adequate writer and a well-rounded student.

During my time at Iowa State, I have not had very many classes that I have been able to say helped me develop as a person. I learn a lot from my classes and am able to use what I have learned – but very few classes actually change who I am. Because of this class, I have learned about racism and bias in the history of education and I am able to recognize that I did not incorporate diversity into my life prior to this class. It is not something that often crossed my mind because it has never been something I had to worry about as someone who is Caucasian. This class brought to my attention the issues that still surround race. It is especially apparent how it affects students who are simply trying to get an education. This class inspires me to learn more about diversity and what I can do to be an ally as well as what I can do in my future classroom.

Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally.
There is rare moments in life where someone is truly blissful. Maybe a first kiss, a dream job, or a wedding day. I’m here to talk about none of those things because I have experienced them all and nothing tops the feeling of having your newly born child placed in your arms for the first time. I have a wonderful baby girl, Sophia. Our very first picture together is, of course, at the hospital when she was placed in my arms for the first time. I have never felt such overwhelming joy in my life. This little girl was everything and I could not let her have a rough childhood like I had. I knew in that moment, with my little bundle of joy in my arms that no matter what happened from this point on that my daughter would have
