As a youth growing up I loved to read and write essays, writing always came easily to me. It was a dream of mine to actually write a book. It was my desire to write a nonfictional book, an influential self-help book for children. As an adult after high school my love for reading continued, but I no longer was expected to write papers, so that dream faded as time and life continued. As I began the charting process for nursing, that was challenging for me. In nursing, documentation is short, simple and to the point, that was not the way we were taught to write in high school. For the last 16 years, my writing experiences have been related to nursing documentation. With my recent career change I have been writing more memos, emails, evaluations,
My writing experience about the career paper was more informative than I was expecting. By reading the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), I quickly realized that there was so much information about a career in medicine, I was not aware of especially with regards to employment and predicted employment rates. However, the most difficult part of the writing process was trying to incorporate personal information into the narrative while using statistics and descriptions from OOH to come up with a coherent essay. For example, with a plethora of personal information and details about factors that has motivated me to pursue a career in medicine, it was difficult to summarize and incorporate information from OOH into my
This semester has impacted me and my writing abilities greatly. I feel I have improved in all aspects of writing. Throughout High school writing was never my preferred subject, but after taking this class I have developed an interest in writing and no longer look at it as a chore, but more as a method to express myself.
Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life.
Attached is my final project, a cumulative portfolio documenting my growth as a student and as a writer through out English 102. My English portfolio includes revised versions of my research paper, “Global Warming: Hot Topic” and essay “Blueprint Solution for the Poor,” along with the original drafts complete with red ink corrections. In addition, I am also providing this reflection essay demonstrating what I have learned this semester and how I have enhanced my original drafts. English 102 has taught me a number of things and has improved my writing skills. There are many things I have struggled with throughout the semester, but regardless, I have overcome most of my obstacles. Most of all, I have learned how to distinguish good sources from bad sources, how to better use citations, and how to properly develop a thesis.
In the career field of Nursing, professional writing skills and abilities are very important to be successful. Some specific writing skills needed are detailed, accurate spelling and punctuation, and conciseness. When it comes to writing, both professionals who work in the field and career guidebooks suggest that if a person is interested in this career path, he or she should be able to write clear and effective. He or she also should be able write professionally, the way something is written is a reflection on the type of writer he or she is. In nursing, a great deal of writing is read by many healthcare professionals, such as, doctors, lawyers, therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. If there is confusion in the document, the point may not get across. Everything a nurse writes is important, from quick notes to full length documents, it is all vital. Making errors in the career path could cost his or her career.
This year has been a blast! There were so many things that just cried out me, and the projects were so much fun! I know I have grown as a writer by starting to have less and less edits on my paper. Making my blog helped me grow as a writer because it made me want to work harder. I wanted to work harder because I knew people would see my work. Sacred writing time has helped me grow as a writer because the time was helpful in the sense that I got some of my best ideas in just 5 minutes. Mrs. Lockwood has been a huge influence on my writing ability. Her instruction helped me grow by fixing my errors. I made many grammatical and punctual errors, that is, before I started no red ink. No red ink helped me to eliminate those errors. I usually don't
Ways that I grew as a writer is knowing information about the topic on that I am covering. Studying the information and taking key notes helped me to understand how to go along with it when writing. Formatting an outline helped me formulate the structure of my whole writing. I learned grammar practices and a paper should be formatted by going over certain mistakes I made from the past. Getting feedback from the instructor helped me see certain mistakes that I didn't see at first or didn't even know existed. Learning from past examples helped me become a better writer. Lots of practice also helped in me into become a better writer. I wasn't used to writing a lot on topics that was required to turn in; such as having homework that required a
Throughout my academic career, I haven’t given writing much of a chance. Instead, I gravitated towards math and science subjects. I believed that writing wasn’t one of my strengths, which caused me to not enjoy past composition courses. This opinion changed during my writing process for “Strategic Devices,” my rhetorical analysis of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail. As I analyzed the skillfully crafted letter, I was reminded of how powerful writing can be, and, when used for good, words can transform the situation that they are spoken into. In English 121, I have learned many new aspects of writing, grown as a writer, and developed a fresh perspective towards composition. Through this progress, I hope to become a positive impact in my sphere of influence.
This year, we have written several essays; all of which I have learned something new to help improve my writing. Looking back at my writing from the start of the year to now, I have encountered substantial improvements in my ability to form an effective introductory paragraph, my ability to use different types of phrases and my development of examples. “My Summer Reading Essay,” written earlier in the year, demonstrates my lack of knowledge on writing an introductory paragraph, using topic sentences and developing examples. However, since the beginning of the year, I have begun to see improvements in essays like “Major Works I” and the “Joe and Claire Narrative” that include more effective introductory paragraphs, the use of different types
I relate to this quote by Brandon A. Trean because to me photography and writing are sort of similar. There can be a 100,000 meanings and things going on in a photo as there can be on a page. Writing and pictures capture moments and feelings that can make the person reading or looking feel as if they were at that place and feeling those emotions, that's why I enjoy writing.
All the outcomes are clear and I like how we are expected to reach them. I am a little bit scared with the grammar part and the specific skills that I should develop for this course. My writing skills are not the best’s, since English is not my first language. I love to read, and since I moved to US I started doing it in English. This is helping me to have a better understanding of the language, but I haven’t be paying attention to the writing. I hope to develop the good skills writing that are expected from me.
Before returning to college to finish my degree, I called myself a decent writer. Over the years, I have completed several reports, papers, and even charging documents that were used in courtrooms. Recent papers that I sent to Paperrator.com during this course came back with lackluster results, subsequently, this unit’s reading showed that my writing skills can and will improve. I typically write and organize my thoughts on paper before writing any documents of any length, which is one of the ideas in the reading. Now, I am learning to give a clearer thesis statement, record evidentiary statements about that thesis, and organize them for an effectively written paper.
Writing and I have never gotten along. Writing papers looms over my head like dark storm clouds. When children lack writing and reading when they are younger, they tend to struggle with writing essays as adults. I first realized this in the eighth grade when I had to write my first lengthy essay.
When I was a child, writing was one of my favorite hobbies, so I used to spend many hours to write in my daily journals. However, when I came to America, I felt more difficult to write and express my thoughts in English because I did not know much vocabularies and lacking grammatical knowledge. Then, I decided to go back to school to improve my writing skills because I recognize the significant of writing in my everyday lives. As a college student, my writing are about different types of class assignments such as reflections, journals, essays, and research papers. As a teacher aide in the preschool classroom, and most of my writings are reports, observation, notes, and curriculum planning. At the beginning of the Academic Writing Seminar (AWS 100) when I wrote my first essay assignment, and I found out that writing essays in English was not easy. At the end of the semester, I realize I have learned valuable lessons while working seriously to write assignments from the AWS 100, so this class will a step with deep preparation to help me successful in writing research papers skills at Pacific Oaks College. In this essay, I will also introduce the “best” of my writing, and share my experiences on the process of creating this portfolio.
America is a place full of immigrants with no single ethnicity or race. America can also be referred to as the ?Melting Pot? because it consists ingredients of multicultural backgrounds. There are cultures such as French American, Asian American, Italian American and African American. I am Mexican American. My culture has helped me to become the writer I am today. My bicultural background and constant moving back and forth from Mexico to America has both influenced and weakened my writing. Although I was born in America, my Mexican culture has always been a part of my life. I have spent the majority of my life in Mexico, and Spanish is my first
