As a freshman at West Chester University, I have began to learn many skills in my WRT 120 class. Writing has been never been a strong suit for me, but as I began taking this class I have required multiple skills and developed a more creative mind in my writing. Dr. Cooke gave assignments that as students, we could express our own intellectual ideas in her prompts. Like I have stated, It was always hard to write an assignment that was on one concrete subject. Being able to contribute my own personal ideas and express in my own words, I was able to find my creative side into my work. I have always believed a “good writer” was someone that was able to speak in their own words to pursue their creative side.
The goals of this class was to help students like myself, broaden their minds to think and analytically about their writing. To compose a good piece, is to really think about your writing and to communicate effectively. The workshops we have done throughout the year, has helped me better my writing by seeing others works and realizing what they needs fixed, it what i do as well. Getting multiple feedbacks helps me develop as a writer because I can learn how really contribute my time and ideas in better so that it becomes a great piece.
As a class, we were asked, “ what is a good writer?” And every time I have said they need to be creative and concise. Although I still believe those are important aspects, there are is so much more. The writer has to care for their work for
A good writer is someone who knows how to write well, have ideas to put on paper and write a well-organized essay that answers the question that a professor gives to you. I identify my own writing by not being good because I have issues sometimes getting words on paper, organizing the essay and my grammar is not very well. The methods that are effective for improving my own writing is practice writing and have someone proof read my work. I am in COM100L because my grammar is not good and my writing on paper is all over the place. My expectation for this course is to improve my grammar when I write essays and fix my mistakes when I write.
It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.
Writing is a skill that many authors use to show their style or qualities. Writing is such a great experience and it allows you to tell stories, or speak your opinions. It gives you opportunities to speak up and show your worth. There is two important steps for writing, one is to always think positive, and two is always believe in what you have to say. Many people struggle with writing at times and that's because they haven't thought out their ideas all the way or showed their full potential yet. It takes time to become a good writer.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
Throughout my time in english 110 I have written an analysis essay, a research paper, and an opinion editorial piece. Two of which I have never written before. At the beginning of the semester I thought a good writer was someone who used good word choice and who could use an effective writing theme for an essay. I was so utterly wrong, a good writer is someone who can evoke emotion, connect ideas and effectively relate to others. They use peers for feedback and always revise their work. A good writer is someone who believes that their work is never finished, it is more than just someone who can tie a few ideas back into their original thesis statement. As I grew as a writer in this class, I have come to the belief that I now posses a few of
Going into this course, I had never taken a creative writing course and all of my english or language courses in high school focused if not on literature than on academic writing. Which certainly explains my skills and my identity as a writer. I was confident in my ability to write the five paragraph structured paper, research papers, lab reports, and quite a few other styles and types of
Writing is the ability to form words and phrases into a well thought-out idea. However, many people find writing to be difficult and tedious at times. Even professional writers have reported episodes of “Writer’s Block”. Nonetheless, writing is a fundamental practice of an educated individual. In order to become a great writer one must examine their strengths, weakness, and strategies for perfecting the art of writing.
As any artist does in their particular work of art, in order to become a great writer, you must be completely invested in what you are creating. Sentences must flow as if brush strokes, words must compile to create cohesive, clear, and complex thoughts as if colors. Writing is just as much of an art as painting, sculpting, or drama. Just like in writing, every artist has a particular style- the way the artist uses his brush, colors, canvas, tools- In writing a style can be shown by the writers distinct use of different sentence structures, distinct types of vocabulary, or other components that distinguish one writer from another. For myself, a great contributor into my style of writing was developed from a sense of humor obtained from a creative
I wanted to take this class because I really want to further my knowledge on writing and to help me to prepare for what my college papers are like so that I don’t go to college not knowing how to write correctly. I also wanted to take this class because writing will always be a part of my life, not only in college but, most likely in any job that I have when I'm older, it will also help me now in high school for other classes.
After looking back at all the writing I have accomplished in this class and experiences I have faced in other English classes, I realized how they have affected me as a writer and where I stand as one as of now. The writer I am today has been greatly benefited with years of learning English in school and other literacy sponsors. Throughout the years, I have learned a number of ways to write and I have been positively impacted by these methods. I now know the type of writer that I am and how I write best and in under which conditions. Now, I have my own writing process that most likely differs from my peers.
For as long as I can remember I have always struggled with writing especially essays. I am not sure if it is my lack of imagination or my lack of knowledge with writing basics but writing has definitely been a struggle for me. When I entered this class I became very nervous right away to learn that I was going to have to write in this class. Could I be successful in this class? Would I have any idea what I was doing? Although, I was nervous and had many fears, as soon as we jumped into week two things seemed to flow and my fears seemed to subside. This class was setup in a way that helped the student be successful. The key to my success was to not fear the essay but to break it apart and do it in pieces (the way the course was set up). The research paper was very beneficial in teaching me the sections of a research essay that can be carried over into other writing areas.
Good writers are considered as role models who give us something to aspire to and there are too many to mention. I love reading Carroll, Lee Ann’s book. Rehearsing New Roles: How College Students Develop as Writers. Lee Ann Carroll is a professor of English at Pepperdine University who specialize in composition theory. She shows how college students develop as good writers over several years of studying in college. At the same time Carroll argues for the developmental viewpoints that held by different faculties that students must be skilled to become creative writers. “Student writing may sometimes need to get "worse" before it can get "better." Because many col¬lege writing tasks are essentially new to students, they will need repeated practice
Before I came to college, I felt my writing had to follow a certain pattern and be fixated around one way of thinking. What I was fortunate to learn was quite the opposite. Writing does not have to follow any certain pattern, but can rather be structured through many different possibilities. I was also told in high school that my papers either had to agree or disagree with the given topic, even if I believed otherwise. This formulated a very one-track way of thinking when it came to my papers. Now I know that I can let my mind explore new and exciting ideas. I can agree, disagree, compliment, criticize, and question the author however my heart desires, as long as I have the evidence to back myself up. Many authors in the book, Writing About Writing, explain their processes as well as the processes of others when it comes to writing. As a writer, I can draw on my own processes and relate them to the authors, as well as use their ideas and apply them to myself. Through reading, I have learned new methods of invention, planning and revising, and incubation when it comes to writing. All ways I can use to create more meaningful and creative work.
A: A good writer in general uses no wasted words, correct grammar, and all of the basics. A good writer is able to communicate ideas efficiently and not make the reader read any unimportant stuff. Each paragraph should only have one topic and should communicate that topic efficiently. In psychology, an important skill in writing is being able to communicate through metaphor in order to explain psychology concepts that are abstract. For example when I am studying the correlation between attention and memory, it is important to define the terms that I am using scientifically and to operationalize them.
I remember the first diary assignment that I had in grade three. The instructor asked me to write one hundred words to describe my day every single day. As tiring as it seemed for a third-grader, I have always appreciated my instructor since she introduced me to express myself in words. My experience in writing goes from writing stories to texting on social media and to write cards to people. I view writing as a powerful tool to introduce myself to people, to form relationships, and to communicate at an emotional level that daily conversation can’t reach. However, there is always another form of writing, that is, argumentative essays. Although being less experienced in academic writing, I realize that the tenacity in well written essays makes writing compelling in terms of creating initiatives for issues that people matter. Ultimately, regardless of writing styles, writing allows me to capture my thoughts and imaginations through story telling, gain knowledge of the society, and impact other individuals around me.
