Audiences and Films
The BBFC has commissioned me to undertake research as part of a project to ascertain to what degree films can be regarded as powerful within contemporary society. In this assignment, I will comprehensively explain the relationship between audiences and films with well explained examples. I refer to the different sectors relating to the topic that include the following:
a) active and passive audience models
b) the preferred readings theory
c) reception theory and viewing contexts
d) your own research into the relationship between audiences and films
Active and Passive Audiences
An active audience is the opposite. An active audience can interact with the programme and tell them their views, and what they would like to see. They can influence the outcome of the whole show.
A passive audience is an audience that has no influence over the outcome of the programme. They cannot change it in any way and it is up to the writers to decide what happens and when.
Hypodermic Needle Model
The Hypodermic Needle Theory is one of the oldest in the field of media studies. The audience size is the amount of spectators that are viewing or accessing the damaging material that increases the victim’s humiliation. When the victim notices a colossal amount of people viewing, it makes their situation even worse.
While negotiating the brief I had to deliberate on the intended audience, the purpose and the genre markers inherent in my trailer. The trailer will be set in a haunted asylum, three film students will investigate the mental hospital to dismiss the rumours in a documentary format, it of course turns out the rumours are true and the trio need to try and escape the asylum with their lifes still intact. I chose the unisex young adult market for my trailer, persons aged 15 to 25. I also had to decide on what genre markers would be present in my trailer. The trailer is of course an advertisement and it's main purpose is to get the viewers to go and see the full release of the film in cinemas.

The imaginary audience is an adolescence belief that others are as interested in them as they themselves are. It is also an attention getting behavior. These behaviors peak around 13 years of age.
Although the best reasons for “going to the movies” are to be entertained and eat popcorn, understanding a film is actually quite complex. Movies are not only a reflection of life, they also have the capability of shaping our norms, values, attitudes, and perception of life. Through the media of film, one can find stories of practically anything imaginable and some things unimaginable. Movie-makers use their art to entertain, to promote political agendas, to educate, and to present life as it is, was, or could be. They can present truth, truth as they interpret it, or simply ignore truth altogether. A movie can be a work of fiction, non-fiction, or anything in-between. A film is an artist’s interpretation. What one takes away from a film depends upon how one interprets what has been seen and heard. Understanding film is indeed difficult.
It has been observed that many movies have gained or lost its reputation over the years. The values, attitudes and actions of people have changed as years have gone by, which is reflected in their changing opinions and expressions; the changing society behavior is responsible for the gain or loss of reputation of a particular movie over a period of time.
2) A captive audience is a group of people who listen to or watch someone or something because they cannot leave. These people ultimately are forced to listen or watch someone’s message because they cannot leave the place.
Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
The producers will develop a test and the audience will tell the producers whether it is something they want to see or they are not going to see. This can affect the next text to be produced in an attempt to conform to the audience demands. Looking at the development of different types of genres and the development of films within the same genre, it’s possible to look at similarities and differences and identify changes in society and audience ideologies and tastes.
Films and movies hold much than we can guess, they reveal a lot of vices and rots that are happening in society. Others give a history of a particular society, its beliefs, culture and their standard of living in the society. Films are used to disclose the social responsibilities in a given season and customs, moral values, societal worries and other cultural practices.
During the early 1900’s audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event in the media.
