Co-sleeping is the involvement of a child or infant sleeping with their mother in the same area or room (Berger, 2012). Co- sleeping in our society is rare, but becoming more common like in other parts of the world such as Asia or Africa, where sleeping next to your child is considered normal, because they feel it’s cruel to separate your child at night. (Berger, 2012). Most American parents place their infants in warm cribs in their own room and are usually monitored by a baby monitor. Co-sleeping can be very effective when it comes to breastfeeding, helping the baby feel safe, making it easier for the baby to fall asleep, helps infants and mothers get more sleep time, and helps connect the child with the parent (Gupta, 2014).
My observation was done at my daughter’s home daycare in Mashpee. The physical aspects include, a 1.1-million-dollar home with blue walls in the living room, tons of windows, between 8-9 windows. There is a playroom on the second floor above the 3 car garage and it is huge! They spend a lot of time up there as the kids love playing. There are 2 pack-n-plays in the play room for nap time, and another pack n play in an extra bedroom. There are mats that are set up in the play room also for the older children to take naps in. The naps happen from 1-2:30 and all the kids go to sleep when they are told. The living room and play-room are all loaded with a ton of toys. Jumpers, chairs, and lots of different age variety play toys. There are 6 children with 1 teacher, and on occasion has an assistant who helps out. I go in and help out also because I love being around children so if I have the free time, I will be there to help, and my daughter loves being there so it’s a win for both of us.
Dysfunctional Beliefs About Child Sleep Scale, (DBACS). Parents dysfunctional beliefs about children's sleep were analyzed using a an instrument adapted from a DBAS scale for adults. The original had 28 items that were modified to tap into parents dysfunctional beliefs about their child's’ sleep. Two changes were made from the original version, items pertaining to growing older were excluded as they are not relevant to children; word substitutions, the second change, were made to the remaining 22 items. The Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire, (CSHQ), was used to measure the reports made by parents on children with SRP’s. Mothers and fathers were asked to observe their child's sleep behaviors for a week. The CSHQ consists of 45 items forming 8 subscales determine fundamental sleep domains: bedtime resistance, sleep-onset delay, sleep disordered breathing and daytime sleepiness. Parents were asked to rate items on a 3 point scale, and indicate whether they felt there was a problem for their child. Another way to measure an SRP is the Self Sleep Report (SSR), used to measure self reported SRP’s by the children. Sleep diaries and the use of Actigraphs, are used to measure sleep objectively, Actigraphs are motion loggers and it records when the wearer is active or inactive, the periods of inactivity are later logged as rest or sleep. Using Actiwatch-64 and Actiware-CT 5.2, this device and software have shown good concordance against polysomnography in children. The sleep variables measured were: Sleep Onset Latency, Total Sleep Time, and sleep efficiency percent. participants recorded the information a sleep diary; the time they went to bed, lights out, time spent asleep and the time they got out of bed.

When babies get overtired they do not know how to function. Sleep is a natural process and when they are not allowed to follow through on a natural and needed process for function they become irritated and fussy. Allow babies to take their naps uninterrupted, make sure you help baby understand when it is daytime and when it is night time. A way to do this is by ensuring that they are getting sufficient amount of light during the day and a dimmer or darker environment at night.
