‘’organisations exist and function within society and consequently are subject to a variety of social influences. These influences, which include demography, social class and culture, can change over time and affect both the demand and supply side of the economy. Marketing organisations recognise and make use of these factors when segmenting markets for consumer goods and service’’ Worthington, I (2009) p.135. The social demand for chocolate varies for several reasons. One of which is a change in the level of the population. The population of the UK is aging, people are living longer and there are a lower percentage of children. This would indicate that although the population is increasing because of people living longer there are fewer children, which is the main consumer for the chocolate industry resulting in less demand for the product. Another factor is the nation becoming more health conscious. There have been recent concerns in the press regarding the increase of type two diabetes and its link to excess sugar in our diets. This as well as the obesity rate showing no sign of declining has increased consumer awareness and is affecting the decisions that are made in respect to the foods they are purchasing. People will not just buy anything that is on offer but will look for healthier
Nowadays, it seems as if you can find sugar anywhere and everywhere. You can go to the grocery store and there will be shelves upon shelves of candy bars. Not only are they plentiful, but they’re also cheap. It appears that every sugary food item is extremely affordable, and healthy foods are expensive. Well, it hasn’t always been that way. Sugar used to be expensive and difficult for many to afford. Candies and other sugar-packed foods were scarce and tasted horrible. But how has that affected how much we eat?
While Europe and the United States account for most chocolate consumption, the confection is growing in popularity in Asia and market forecasts are optimistic about the prospects in China and India (Nieburg, 2013, para 9). According to the CNN Freedom Project, the chocolate industry rakes in $83 billion a year, surpassing the Gross Domestic Product of over a hundred nations (“Who consumes the most chocolate,” 2012, para 3).
Firstly, the major reasons of global chocolate shortages are cocoa shortages and over consumption. It has a close relationship between them that cocoa bean is a basis of chocolate. Climate changes and pestilence in Africa which is a chief producer, was culprit. It needs about two to five years to get new cacao tress to produce new cocoa beans. It even needs to take 10 years to reveal traits worth preserving (Harris 2014). Walters (2015, p.4) also holds
The world population is increasing at an exponential rate. Along with it is an increase of mouths to feed and more food to be created to feed them. Many options come about when feeding the population, organic food, regular healthy food, fast food, fattening food etc. Many times, parents and American society as whole choose to go the unhealthier, cheaper and tastier route when
The transportation cost of chocolate was high and small mom and pop stores commonly supplied chocolate made locally. Today you would be hard-pressed to find local chocolate in the United States, with the shelves dominated by four major brands. The
I thought it was just because calories just increased in the foods because of more sugar and other additives in the foods, but I did not think about how it was also the portion size that has dramatically changed that could have caused the obesity increase in America. By increasing the portion size of foods, it is easy for people to eat whatever they get. Especially since when we were little, our parents always told us to finish everything on out plates. This therefore leads to people just eating everything on their plate in restaurants or other places where the portion sized
In Canada, premium chocolates were growing at 20 percent annually and the Canadian market size for Chocolates was US$ 167 million in 2006. An attractive growth from premium chocolates makes the current player like Rogers Chocolates, Purdys and others are thinking new strategies to expand market. In addition, some big traditional manufacturers like Hersheys and Cadbury are also very interested and keen to enter this segment (Zietsma 2007).
One of the biggest driving force was the growing preference for the differentiated product instead of the commodity product. Consumers were increasingly demanding to buy natural and organic foods rather than processed foods. These foods were healthier for them, which was one of the main reasons for the demand. This brings up another driving force of societies concern for their health. Consumers do not
One important underlying driver of change in the chocolate industry is the large manufacturers lobbying to change the definition of the term "chocolate" under USFDA guidelines, if they are successful in doing this then this could potentially have a dramatic impact on the competitive environment, with lots of cheaper products
“Don’t disturb the universe Goober, no matter what the posters say.” This quote by Jerry Renault in by Robert Cormier The Chocolate War express if you are an individual the world will beat you down by being and individual. By being an individual you don’t follow trends and do not follow groups. In the Chocolate War Jerry Renault refuses to sell chocolates and he gets bullied and harassed.
I agree with the blog post. I believe people are becoming conscious of what they are consuming and how it was raised. This explains the high demand for food leaning toward the organic and “ethical” part of the food
The premium chocolate market has been growing at 20% annually, showing that buyers are willing to pay more for a better tasting and better quality chocolate. The declining growth of the overall chocolate market and rapid growth of the premium chocolate market is positive for current producers of premium chocolates in that the decline
