The characters in the film include Sara; Sara’s son, Harry; Harry’s friend, Tyrone; and Harry’s girlfriend, Marion. Sara, who watches TV obsessively and desperately wants to lose weight, becomes addicted to prescription pills that contains amphetamines. Harry and Tyrone are recreational drug users who attempt to work in a drug trade and Marion is an aspiring fashion designer. Unlike Sara, Harry, Tyrone, and Marion are addicted to heroin.Throughout the film, we navigate through the consequences of their addiction.
Film/Reading Portrayal of Disorder
The film does an excellent job of accurately portraying substance use disorder (SUD). The film utilizes scenes with intense close-ups to allow viewers to experience the addict’s reality through the perspective of the addict. Each character finds themselves trapped inside their own obsessions and are consumed and pushed to the extremes. According to National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) (2013), regular heroin use alters the functioning of the brain which results to tolerance or dependence. Tolerance results when more of the drug is needed to
In considering all the models that propose to offer insight in the factors to consider with addiction, “each perspective fails to completely explain all of the facets of the SUDs adequately” (Doweiko, 2012, p. 352).
The movie industry has involved the use of drugs, sex, violence over the years to increase the thrill of movies. Realistic depictions or not, movies with any of these three categories have been frequently viewed and accepted in our culture. With movies creating false “fictional drugs,” along with amplifying the side effects of prescription drugs, it is crucial to critique what is actually true or not. Whether or not the drug’s effects are medically correct has been glanced over by many. Directed by Scott Calvert in 1995, the movie The Basketball Diaries focuses on the substance abuse of heroin by the main character, Jim.
For many years, individuals have battled substance abuse and addiction. My position comes from hearing about it, having seeing results from it, and reading about it, also developing my own thoughts about addiction. Weil and Rosen (1993) believe that a drug use (and addiction) results from humans longing for a sense of completeness and wholeness, and searching for satisfaction outside of themselves. McNeece and DiNitto (2012) says the reason why people continue to use drugs to the point of becoming a physically and/ or psychologically dependent on them are more complex, some have tried to explain this
In Embattled Dreams, author Kevin Starr explains the decade that begins with World War II and ends with the growth of states that were part of the war, concentrating on the United States specifically California. The book speaks about the changes that the war brought into California and how it was a catalyst for major changes in the state’s economy and society. It focuses on the development of California. Many books show the major events that changed a country, but there were smaller stories within the country that demonstrated to the development as well. The author wants to show readers that California contributed much to the war cause, building machinery and such, but this book emphasizes the effects these jobs had on society. Kevin Starr
In The Big Sleep, Chandler portrays Marlowe as the knight in shining armor. This establishes a motif of the stained glass window in General Stern wood’s home in the first chapter of the novel and is an appropriate motif in dictating Marlowe’s knightly role in the novel. The stained glass that is reflected in the novel places Marlowe in the position of the knight as it shows a knight who strives to reach a woman to set her free. The fact that he stares at the glass makes him develop the need to offer assistance. This motif is suitable because it sets the stage for what is to take place in the aftermath when Marlowe rescues Carmen. Secondly, Chandler tries to connect Marlowe with the knightly personality from the beginning of the novel that he intended to name his detective the modern knight and a brave man fighting for General Sternwood. He takes the role of the servant to Sternwood’s lord and therefore, in the knightly terms, it is sufficient to say that Marlowe is striving to find justice. Moreover, he is dedicated to rendering his services in the line of duty with much loyalty and honor despite the sexual and financial temptations that come his way. Like the ancient knights, Marlowe has deeply invested in his personal code of chivalry that contain among others, the need to overcome the sexual temptation of whatever magnitude that comes his way. Lastly, as a representation of the modern-day knight, Marlowe comes out in the novel as a tough detective and a brave individual
Gabor Mate’s book, In the Realm of Hungry Ghost: Close Encounters with Addiction, he says “Far more than a quest for pleasure, chronic substance use is the addict’s attempt to escape distress” (Mate, 2010, p35). This quote can be applied to the movie. One example is the idea that Harry may be trying to fill the void of his mother always paying attention to the television and not him. He may also be trying to make up for not having a father figure in his life. Also, he uses the drugs to help him distress from the struggle of trying to make enough money for his girlfriends dream clothing boutique. Consequently, using heroin is actually making his situation worse (Watson & Aronofsky, 2000). Also, according to Elizabeth Hartney’s article titled What Does It Feel Like to Get High on Heroin?, she writes that heroin is commonly used to avoid pain, rather than for recreational fun. Additionally, these two ideas can be applied with Sara’s issues as well. She was invited to appear on television, and she was ecstatic about it, however, the red dress she wore to Harry’s graduation has seemed to shrink, or she has grown. In order to fit into the beautiful red gown, she would have to lose some weight, which adds stress to her life. The prescription drugs fulfill her desire to eat, which in turn leads to some serious consequences which were previously stated (Watson & Aronofsky,

Brianna flinches slightly as Josh stands up, the empty spot on the hospital bed slightly discomforting to her. She nearly reaches out to grab his hand, afraid that she would never see him again once he leaves the room. Requiem for a Dream is a 2000 psychological drama directed by Darren Aronofsky. The story follows four characters as they struggle with, and eventually succumb to their different addictions. This leads to the characters’ imprisonment in a world of delusions and reckless desperation that is eventually overtaken by reality. The film makes effective use of imagery and sound to create the feeling of the film reeling towards the end at an impossible pace. By the end of the movie, the characters are completely changed: withered, broken, and alone. Requiem for a Dream was screened at the 2000 Cannes film festival, and was met with primarily positive reviews.

Five more minutes. Sara noted, glancing at the building clock across the street. Bringing the last bit of cigarette to her lips, she exhaled, basking in the sensation of smoke coating her throat. Darkness was beginning to settle as Dylan stepped off the bus. He was in a peaceful neighborhood. All the houses were painted different shades of brown and red. Dylan walked past a kids play park where he saw a mother and her children. The kids raced back and forth playing tag until the mother called to them that it was time to head home. What a cheerful family. A frown came to Dylan’s face.
