Research Paper On Why School Should Start Later

Over 87% of teenagers don’t get enough sleep and go to school tired. Teenagers have constant expectations to live up to, but with the amount of sleep they’re getting it can be seemingly impossible. The question has been brought up time and time again, should the school day start later? Because of the risks of not getting enough sleep, trying to keep up with their their busy schedules, and being in their adolescent years, having the school day start later would help teenagers around the world immensely.

It is a well known fact that teenagers in general need more sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation: “[teenage sleep] is as important as the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. It can even help you to eat better and manage stress of being a teen.” When schools start as early as 7 o’clock, it puts students health at risk. Adolescents already have a natural shift in their internal body clock, or circadian rhythm when it comes to sleep. Puberty allows this to happen, causing a “sleep phase delay” of about two hours. Many students are not getting enough sleep. In especially middle schools and high school, teenagers are sleep deprived. At the age when they need it the most, teens are not getting enough hours of rest because of how early their school starts. It is very unreasonable that school for teenagers starts early when they need a great amount of sleep. Research shows that “33% of teenagers report falling asleep in school” (Wake up Call, 2014). If students are falling asleep in school, they are not getting the full amount of education and knowledge taught to them. They do not have the energy and positivity to accomplish their best during the school day.

Ever wonder if school would be easier to get through if it started Later in the morning? School is already a struggle for some students with depression, anxiety, stuff happening at home, and learning disabilities, so maybe school starting later is a good idea.Although it seems like a good it may not be as great as it sounds. There are many reasons why school shouldn’t start later in the morning but the two most important would be that students wouldn’t get as much sleep as they need and wouldn’t have time to find or even get a decent job.

I take the position which encourages the later start time because I am tired of waking up at six-thirty in the morning. The California state board of education requested time of School start time is eight-thirty in the morning. Our school starts at eight-o-seven in the morning. To begin with, students would be more rested and prepared in the morning if schools were to start later. It does not take a genius to know that a student that is well rested will work better than one that is tired and drowsy. Students should be for a later start time because their academic success, safety, and alertness would all improve. As children get older they transfer more often to other schools. Start times are earlier and homework increases which lead to less sleep. Schools all around the U.S should move to a later start time. It would benefit both students and parents.

First of all, if the school day started later in the day, students will become more productive in school. In conclusion, the school system should allow schools to start later. If this were to go into effect, so many students would succeed in school more. They would not be as tired and could focus so much better. In all, schools starting later would benefit everyone tremendously.

There are multiple reasons why schools start way too early in the morning. Some reasons are exhausted students, more time to get ready for teachers and students, etc. These reasons support what y schools should start later in the day.

Wouldn’t you love if the school day started later? While that’s what I am here for. One reason I think we should start the school day later is scientist have proven that people who sleep later are actually smarter. I am sure that the teacher wants the kids ready to learn. Also there are kids that live far from the school and they have to wake up even earlier to get to school on time. Maybe they have to take their older brother or sister to school on the way. I think that if the school day started later then that will help my parents in the morning. It would help parents because usually there is always that one parent that has to argue with their kid in the morning. When you wake up arguing with your parents then your whole day is ruined. These are the pros of why we should start school later.
