“The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived” (Robert Jordan). This quote illustrates that being flexible and flowing with any change of circumstances will aid in resilience. Developing this quality is an important part of most people’s lives, especially when dealing with hardships. In the movies, “Where the Wild Things Are,” and in the movie “Inocente,” both Max and Inocente show resilience throughout their lives. Also, in the book The Glass Castle, Jeanette has to overcome obstacles throughout the book and show resilience. In the book and the movies, Jeanette from The Glass Castle, Max from “Where the Wild Things Are”, and Inocente from “Inocente,” the three of them all can be applied to Carl Roger’s humanistic theory of psychology.
Resilience is defined as, “the ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens” (Merriam Webster par 1). Resilience is shown when people use their strength when dealing with adversity. When people are experiencing negative circumstances resilience may lead to positive outcomes (PBS Par 1). First off Inocnete was homeless which obviously creates many challenges, however Inocente continues to attend school, which shows personal strength. Another example in Inocente’s life where she overcomes obstacle is when her father was deported for being an illegal immigrant. This forces Inocente to become more independent because her mother also cannot obtain work. Eventually Inocente achieves her dream as artist and at her art program was asked to showcase her work at her own art show. Achieving this great accomplishment illustrates Rogers’s theory. She reached her full potential on her own without anyone’s help, unlike how Roger’s theory states that parenting is key factor in their personhood, which Inocente clearly did not
