Abstract
A ghost appears and says he is Hamlet’s father. The ghost says he was murdered, and wants Hamlet to get revenge on who is responsible for his death. Hamlet is hesitant because he doesn’t know if the ghost is telling the truth. Hamlet must find out the truth and deal with his actions along the way. The ghost has a very impactful and important role in the play, and is the driving point in the play.
In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet is a very interesting character. He’s the prince of Denmark that is a very loving person that changes to a character of rage and begins to go mad because of his fathers’ death. Though the ghost only appears in a few scenes of the play, the ghost plays a key role in the destiny of the characters and influences the plot. In the article “Prince of Self-Pity,” Allan Massie says the theme of revenge is also an important factor because the ghost is full of revenge; the ghost is the one who wanted Hamlet to get revenge on the person held responsible for his death, putting the idea of getting revenge in Hamlet’s mind (Massie). The ghost’s main purpose in the play is to talk to Hamlet and make sure he gets revenge on Claudius. Will Hamlet follow through with the ghost’s request?
Before the play begins the ghost makes an appearance. In the beginning of the play, Hamlet is reacting normally to a fallen member of his family, which is his father. Once the death of his father happened, he starts to become depressed and angry at
From the beginning of his and his mother’s conversation Hamlet was very angry and on edge with her for being with his father’s murderer. Hamlet somehow knew someone was eavesdropping on their conversation as he had been spied on previously. He suddenly decides to act out of fury thinking how angry he was at Claudius and kills who’s behind the curtain, thinking it was Claudius. Hamlet realizes after that he killed the wrong man, it had been Polonius that he killed but he didn’t care much saying that Polonius was a fool. Hamlet sees the ghost again after and the ghost tells Hamlet he still must carry out his revenge for his father because he had failed .
The beginning of the play sets the stage for everything to unfold. Hamlet is weak in the mind due to his father’s unnatural death. In Act 1, Hamlet speaks to the Ghost and learns how his father died. Without Hamlet interaction with the Ghost, he would not have created a desire for revenging his father’s death. Now knowing that Claudius killed his father in order to take his place as king, it only makes sense that Hamlet desires the truth to be revealed as to what happened to his father.
William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet relays Hamlet’s quest to avenge the murder of his father, the king of Denmark. The late King Hamlet was murdered by his brother, Claudius, who took the throne and Hamlet’s mother Gertrude for himself. Hamlet is beseeched by the ghost of his father to take vengeance upon Claudius; while he swears to do so, the prince inexplicably delays killing Claudius for months on end. Hamlet’s feeble attempt to first confirm his uncle’s guilt with a play that recounts the murder and his botched excuses for not killing Claudius when the opportunity arises serve as testimony to Hamlet’s true self. Hamlet is riddled with doubt towards the validity of the ghost and his own ability to carry out the act necessary to
His loyalty and friendship to Hamlet are unquestioned. After hearing about the ghost from his friend, Hamlet instantly meets the ghost of his father. He discovers the alleged murder and quickly takes action. The suspicion that Claudius killed Hamlet’s father causes the betrayal surrounding the new king to grow, and is directly related to Hamlet’s increased devotion towards his father. After obtaining proof that the ghost of his father speaks the truth, Hamlet devotes all of his sanity towards avenging his father’s death.
Hamlet meets the ghost of his father and he is shaken by what he hears. Hamlet’s father relays to him that Claudius is indeed his murderer. The ghost strictly instructs Hamlet to get revenge on Claudius, not mentioning the correct moment to do it. With Hamlet’s warrior side active, he relays his thoughts that
Hamlet from the start of the play is driven to insanity as he tries to get revenge on his uncle, King Claudius. With loss of sanity, Hamlet proceeds to see a ghostly figure that no one else around him can see. This makes him appear even more insane to others around him and to himself as neither party knew what was going on. Believing that Claudius had killed his father, the ghost assured him a little more of this tragedy as they spoke saying,
The play starts with Hamlet coming home from college just to find out that his father died. As well as the finding out that his father has left the earth, he finds out that his mother remarried within two months to his uncle. He also finds that his uncle has wrongfully taken the throne that should be his. During the entirety of the play, Hamlet is betrayed by everyone that he should be able to trust. He was betrayed by his friends, family and the love of his life. After he finds all of this information after coming home from college, the ghost of
When King Hamlet’s Ghost is first introduced, Hamlet is not even the first to see it. Marcellus and Bernardo are the first the ghost decides to appear to, and whenever Horatio sees the ghost some time later, he recognizes the figure as Hamlet’s father, and so he tells Marcellus and Bernardo the story of Hamlet’s father’s death. Hamlet after seeing the ghost for the first time, wonders whether or not this ghost is truly who he says he is. He thinks that maybe there is some other motive the ghost could have. At first, Hamlet is suspicious of the ghost and thinks that it only wants to harm him and persuade him to do things that he would not normally do.
He does not believe that it is truly his father. Even after seeing the ghost himself, Hamlet remains cynical, although he does in fact emotional upon seeing it. The ghost tells Hamlet that his brother killed him in order to steal both his wife and the throne. Hamlet becomes confused after seeing his father’s ghost and is unsure of how he should react. However, he vows to seek revenge against his uncle, although he refuses to do so without first having sufficient evidence to prove his uncle’s guilt.

Hamlet is a critical thinker for the world around him, seeking opportunities to learn. When Hamlet is confronted with the ghost, he isn’t sure if his eyes deceive him. With further inspection, he learns it is his father who appears in front of him.
In the beginning of the play, Hamlet is reacting normally to a fallen member of his family, which is his father. Once the death of his father happened he starts to become depressed and angry at his mother, because she got remarried to Claudius too quickly for Hamlet’s liking. Throughout the play Hamlet is always in trouble with himself. At some point in the play there is an appearance of the ghost who says, “I am thy fathers spirit” (I. V. 14). Hearing this makes Hamlet even more mad almost making him commit suicide and left him in deep anger. Once Hamlet figured out that it was his uncle who killed his father, it made Hamlet want to get revenge for his father.
The Ghost enters into the story in the figure of Hamlet’s recently deceased father to Marcellus and Bernardo, the two guards in the tower. They immediately report this sighting to Horatio to witness the sighting of the Ghost. Horatio then is shocked because he sees the Ghost is wearing armor similar to that of King Hamlet’s, who had recently passed away. This makes Prince Hamlet aware of the sighting as well. Hamlet then consequently goes to see the Ghost and follows him out past the castle walls. He then proceeds to tell him that his uncle, who had just married Hamlet’s mother, killed his father in his sleep with poison and that he must seek revenge. Right from the beginning, the Ghost is implementing horrible ideas into Hamlet’s mind who is hurt by the passing of his father. He
In a tale of death, lies and deceit, In the still of the night a ghost appears to Hamlet, claiming to be his father’s spirit, telling Hamlet to revenge his death, so art thou to revenge when thou shalt hear, (I.v. 5). After learning of his father’s death and how King Hamlet was betrayed by his brother, a young Hamlet vowed revenged on his uncle a “foul and most unnatural murder” (I.v.25). An angrily young Hamlet plot to avenge his father’s deaths takes a slow start. Somewhat confused and a little dismay, he ponders if the ghost that appeared to him is real really his father’s ghost. Those in Hamlet circle thought to believe that the ghost was not real. “What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord? Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff? And there assume some other horrible form, which might deprive your sovereignty of reason (I.4.71-82)?”
