The American Revolution began in April of 1775 and Shay quickly answered to the call to arms in Lexington and served for 11 days. Soon after he joined the local militia, he served as second lieutenant in a Massachusetts battalion from May to December of 1775. Later in his military career, he came to be ranked captain in the 5th Massachusetts Battalion in January of 1777. During his time serving in the military, he fought in the Battle of Lexington, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Battle of Saratoga. While the war was going on, he was injured in battle and due to that, he resigned from the military in 1780, without any amount of pay. When he returned home, he discovered he was to be brought to court for unpaid debts, which he still could
The American Revolution had many things going on and one of them is the French and Indian War. The most significant event led to American Revolution is the French and Indian War. The first settlement in the French was in Quebec. In 1754, George Washington led 150 militiamen in Fort Duquesne but failed because there were more men in the fort so they made George Washington retreat. The militiamen made their own fort called Fort Necessity but also forced Washington to leave to Ohio Territory. Later on, with the war, the battleground became Canada, and the struggles were fierce. Lake Champlain became a main battleground. In 1757, the French seized Fort William Henry, at the southern end of the lake. The fort was important because it gave the holder
The British seemed unbeatable. Their military was one of the best in the world in the eighteenth century. The British had a very well trained, disciplined, well paid, well fed and well equipped army. Their army had a lot of money being passed to them by the English crown allowed them to be financed and well prepared for any situation. The British navy even dominated the seas. On the other side, their opponent, the Patriots didn’t have more than a meager army. The Americans had shortages of ammunition, food, clothing, blankets, and shoes from the difficulty of raising enough funds to finance their necessities.Their army lacked basic training and discipline and they lacked a real navy on the seas causing them to have no way to defend themselves on the coastlines. The British previously had victory after victory
During the beginning of Colonial America, there were many people who migrated from Europe to settle the new founded American Continent. They traveled from Europe to escape the laws, taxes, demands, and nobility brought upon them at the hands of King George III and Parliament. They wanted to be free from the tyranny of King George III. When the colonist arrived on the American Continent they felt freedoms that they had never before felt. After, feeling the freedom of being on this newly found continent King George once again started putting his demands on the Colonist. Eventually, the colonist saw their rights being taken away by the acts that were passed, the taxes that were implemented, and the Proclamation of 1763. The Tyranny of King
When the thirteen colonies were created, the colonies depended greatly on England in order to survive and make something out of this new land. England not only helped them economically but also in time of war against the French during The French and Indian War. It meant that England had to spend extra money helping out the colonies and also with any necessary equipment required to fight in the war. Back home, England had been fighting a war for around 100 years already, so helping out the colonies just added more to their expenses. England wanted to earn some of the money they had wasted, so England decided to raise and put new taxes on the colonies. The colonials thought some of these taxes were outrageous and began getting furious at England. This was one reason for the tension that grew between the colonies and England. Other reasons like the Boston Massacre, in which British soldiers shot and killed 5 colonials, and the Intolerable Acts, led to more anger and tension between these two. All this things eventually led to the colonies declaring war on England. I believe the most significant cause to why the colonies declared war on England was because of the
The most important legacy about the American Revolutionary war is that the people in the colonies had stood up to the oppression that the British monarchy was enforcing on the colonists. Even though it was a long shot for them to win, they were able to change the future and turn the colonies into the United States of American. These lasting changes can be felt today through the political circuit today.
Colonial America’s history from European settlement to the revolutionary war is a story that is best understood when told from multiple perspectives. It is a history that is not one of just the European immigrants, but also the African Americans and American Indians as well, with each ethnic group playing their own role in the development of the region. Although each group’s perspective may not be the same, their collective history is what makes Colonial America. Thus, through analyzing the various historical events and accounts of each of these groups, it can be determined that the history of Colonial America is one of liberty, opportunities, slavery and dispossession.
The American Revolutionary Era was one of the most important periods in American history. This period marked the first time were the newly found Americas would successfully colonized. This Era brought change that defied the current framework of society, promoted a sense of equality, and formed a new economic structure. However, the extent at which the Revolutionary Era can be called “truly revolutionary” is debatable. If we look at the effects the Revolutionary Era had on society, including African slaves, women, and the Indigenous Peoples, it could be characterized as (oxymoronically) un-revolutionary in the sense that pre-Revolutionary Era ideologies continued on into the Revolutionary Era.
In 1776, the American people declared themselves an independent nation. The American people were traumatized by the Revolution and feared a strong central government. This led to their first attempt at a government, the Articles of Confederation, which ultimately failed. After this let down of a government, the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, which would become the law of the American land. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were two influential individuals, who were originally involved in the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Both were involved in the political side of the Revolutionary war, but when speaking of it, told alternate versions of the war. As they approached the end of their lives, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams dedicated themselves to telling extremely differentiating versions of the Revolutionary War; Jefferson focusing on the glory and Adams focusing on the hardships, while Jefferson’s version is the only one recorded in the textbooks students use today.
The Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775 at Lexington and Concord. America was very much unprepared with no central government or army. The congress stepped up as the government and began to organize an army. The Revolutionary War did not end until September 3, 1783 with the signing of the final peace treaty between America and Great Britain. The victory in the Revolution War led to the birth of a new independent nation.
In the modern era, massive debates have arisen on both miniscule issues and important problems. This paradigm of debating has been in effect since the founding of the United States. Without argument and without logic and reason, the United States would have never seceded from the British Empire. The colonies began with a diminishing hope of survival, however, eventually reached the point where they are able to fight the greatest empire of their time. This, however, was not simple; adding on to the countless lives fighting, many minds clashed as well. Without these philosophers, the very founders of our great nation, the United States of America would have not existed. The Revolutionary War began with the struggle between great minds: these were the philosophers who supported Thomas Paine, urging military war; moderates like Ben Franklin, who advocated unity and was resilient about total war; and loyalists who sustained James Chalmers, argueing the foolishness of a revolution-- in the midst of 13 diverse colonies.
Early in the Revolution War, the Continental Army did not officially accept black soldiers. The British took advantage of this by offering freedom to escaped black slaves who would join their army. In 1776 the Continental Army promised bondsmen freedom when the war ended for their loyalty to them. Most of the African American men who fought in the war did receive their freedom as promised. However, they soon found out that the freedom and equality they had fought for did not apply to them. Although the passing of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 prohibited slaves it stilled allowed for owners of slaves to recover runaway slaves that were looking for freedom in the Northwest region. By 1790 more black men were freed, but often worked at minimal or unskilled jobs. Land was often hard to acquire by blacks and black children were still not allowed to go to school. In 1794 a church known as the AME (African Methodist Episcopal Church) established by a former slave (Richard Allen) was formed and became an influential center for the free black people (Norton, 2015).
On April 19th 1775 “the shot heard ‘round the world” initiated the war for independence by the American colonists against the British. There were many reasons why the American Revolution came to be, but the two main reasons were for unjustified taxing acts against the colonists and to receive independence from their mother country England. In the Age of Revolution there were many wars taking place around the world and the American Revolution was one of them, the main objective of these wars was for the achievement of liberty. In this paper I will be talking about many subject matters that have to deal with the American Revolution such as the goals of this war, whether the colonists wanted to simply seek independence from their mother country or create a democratic nation, who benefitted from this war and who didn’t, and so much more, so sit back, relax, and get ready to go back in time as we discuss issues surrounding the war of independence between the colonists and the British.
“The CPM had learnt from bitter experience to become smarter, more subtle and sophisticated, more pragmatic and aware of its limitations and by withdrawing modestly to the background,” Too commented. (7)
The American Revolution is a moment in history that cannot be ignored or altered. The Revolution is a significant moment in history that is known by almost all citizens of the United States. While the historical event ended in a victory, the journey towards the victory was not an easy road. Many hardships had to be overcome to get the success of the American Revolution that everyone knows. Most do not recognize that the freedom and liberty America is so famous for getting was not always the clear result. Joseph Ellis acknowledged this tackle of a liberty when writing, “No event in American history which was so improbable at the time has seemed so inevitable in retrospect” (Ellis, p. 3). For generations now, American’s have learned the same story which lead to the freedom of America; from the Boston Tea Party, then Paul Revere, then the Battle of Lexington, and finally the siege of Yorktown. The details that were not promising are not included in the history that most American’s can recite. It is important to recognize the struggles that had to be taken head-on in order to gain freedom. And even after freedom, the nationality and nationhood of the new American people was not an easy grasp. Ellis explains the journey to nationality and national pride as, “The first founding declared American independence; the second, American nationhood” (Ellis, p. 9). The journey to the American Pride and American Independence that is so famous now did not occur simultaneously, as
The American revolution marked a turning point in American history as it lead to self governance. However, this event is remembered by many as a heroic event where the nation united to fight against the unjust British government which had recently abused its power in the Americas. However, the event was remembered by people of the time period as a struggle in battle and a struggle for a clear ideological position for what they wanted to achieve, reforms or independence. Many were reluctant to fight for their country because they felt the cause wasn't worth it. However, no matter how the event unfolded, the American revolution was a turning point because of the change in political structure, but the underlying social structure and economic foundation of the country did not change.
