Their similar views suggest that a harmonious relationship may be occurring between recording labels and streaming services. This also indicates that because the current digital climate has shifted distributional power, recording labels might be forging better relationships with streaming services to remain relevant. However, Daniel is a member of an independent recording label, which also suggests that he is more open minded, promotes artistic independence, and is less revenue oriented compared to major recording label professionals.

Have you ever wondered who the most calm, positive and creative painters of the 1960’s was? Well, it was Bob Ross. Bob Ross was one of the most inspirational people and painters of the 1960’s in the U.S. To begin, he was in the military for more than 20 years, and rose to become a medical records technician. Second, Bob learned how to paint in his time during service. He spent every minute of his spare time learning how to paint off of tv shows. Once he left the military, he had his own painting show on pbs. Lastly, Bob made a lot of money off of his products. Ross didn’t make any money off of his painting show, but he did make money off of his own line of art supplies, like brushes, and oil paints.
Imagine the number one song of the year with the most downloads, streaming numbers and views on Youtube could not be nominated for a Grammy. Up until June 2014, artists could not be nominated for such an award unless the song was completely their own, meaning there was no sampling of past music. This may not sound like a big deal until songs like “SOS” by Rihanna or “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice became chart topping tracks, and are both derived from older songs. Mark Ronson, music producer and DJ, speaks about how sampled music has changed the way generations discover music, as well as how creative ideas flourish from sampling other artist’s music. In this TED talk “How sampling transformed music,” Ronson gives his opinion on how artists transform
Clive and his company were able to make 425 million dollars in 1999 and 55 million in nine months of 2000. Later in the year, he was at the Grammy awards in Los Angeles for seismic awards (Silberman, 2000). In 2015, Clive’s artists were given standing ovations for their hard work. Later, he was invited to Taylor Swift’s Grammy awards party. Clive Davis has earned 39 Grammy awards since he started in 1960 (Mitchell, 2015).
I propose that all unsigned rising artist should target the business side of the music industry to be successful in the entertainment business because it allows the artist to be taken seriously and make solid connections that can further his/her career. Learning the works of the music industry also enables a new artist to be further successful and profitable. Recent studies show that most new artists without professional representation and a business mindset have a slimmer chance in getting signed to major or independent labels (Lowry, 2011). Overall, the specific change needed is that unsigned artists should be concentrating on their careers as professionals and not amateurs, thus focusing on the ins and outs of the music business and

Much like other labels, RCA has the legal affairs department, the business affairs department, A&R, art, promotion, media, publicity, marketing and artist development departments all playing key roles in the label’s success. Specific people are picked and assigned to work in their respective department to be better relate and benefit to not only the artists but their consumers, listeners and business partners. One would place a lawyer in the A&R (Artists & Repertoire) department. Nor would they send a person who is great at fashion and creating image to handle the label’s finances. It just would not make sense, and it would not help neither the company or the artists. To break down the importances of these departments even more, the are even teams within each department to handle certain aspects as well.
The current music industry is a hard business for all musicians, whether they are a new artist or even a popular radio artist. Modern times have radically changed the way that musicians now make money. Past musicians used to be able to make a living simply by selling their music and playing a few major concerts to survive and even lives some luxurious lives and not really have to focus on anything except the art that they were creating. The music industry has transformed from being an art to becoming a challenging business job for anyone involved. Today, most musicians have to also be able to handle managerial business to get anywhere and make money or find someone to help them. Current musicians need to do more than just sell music
From his very first album at 18 years old to his denial of digital music markets towards the end of his life, a prominent theme throughout Prince’s musical career was his insistence on power over his music. He famously believed that artists should not have managers: “You should be a grown man, be able to man-age yourself”.(Hiatt) His public war with record label Warner Bros. was the pinnacle of his battle for control. “When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns

The term “ghost production” has been coined as the “dirty little secret” of the electronic dance music scene. It is promoted as an opportunity for artists who want to break into the music business to receive help from someone who knows what "sells" and can ensure a popular hit. Ghost production also allows the "ghost producers" to use the same, “recycled” formula in order to pump out these soulless songs that will be commercial hits, while making money in the process. In brief, a sound engineer writes the track for the artist, charging several thousand dollars for the service. The engineer then gives the "artist" all of the final music files he or she needs to send to the labels, with the contractual guarantee that if the song is a hit, the ghost producer will not be paid any of the royalties. That 's right: the person who pays the ghost producer gets all of the royalty money if the track ends up getting signed. However, the artist has to pay the ghost producer to make the track for him or her, so it 's risky — especially since getting a single release on a major electronic dance music label is very difficult in this modern music industry. Since the majority of the creation process is done digitally in electronic dance music production, there has been a huge increase in demand for ghost production. Some of the popular artists in
