“ROSA YOUNG: LIFE + CHRIST = SUCCESS” Introduction It is presumed when the word “missionary” is mentioned, the person who it is referred to has taken a trip outside of their country of origin. By definition, a missionary is, “a person who is sent to a foreign country to do religious work (such as to convince people to join a religion or to help people who are sick, poor, etc.).” Although, the definition is both board and specific, what about those who served as a missionary in a country that at one time had been segregated by the color of race? An invisible line drawn across our Nation that kept those of race, social class and gender separated from doing Gods divine work. Most of us ignore or could not imagine that things of this nature would keep a person from completing Gods tasks. If by happenstance a woman of color overcame such adversities would it then encourage us as Christians to continue our efforts to advance the kingdom of God? The answer is unknown, however; the work of missionaries continues on. The work of a missionary can be summarized as one who is sent into a region (neighborhood, city, state or country) to engage in evangelism. One who promotes a ministry of service that educates in areas like literacy, social justice, health care and economic development. A calling by God that is referenced by many religious organizations as the Great Commission in the book of Matthew, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
My personal view of mission revolves around Servant Leadership or what can be better called “Incarnational leadership”. This is rooted in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, as “He took a towel” (John 13:2-5) and washed Peter’s feet. He was efficient with people, had goals in sight, but was also relational over being task-driven. This kind of leadership produces new churches filled with real purpose and motivation as people are called, appreciated, loved, encouraged, discipled, involved by mentoring and discipleship before they are deployed in ministry (Prov. 27:23; Mark 10:35-45; Luke 22:26; John 13:2-17; 1 Cor. 3- 4; Eph. 4:1-16; Col. 3:13; 1 Thess. 5:13-14; 1 Peter 3:8;
2. The purpose of missionary work can be to convert people to Christianity. However, it causes political controvesary and confcit.
To be a missionary in early Christian times was a very dangerous and risky thing to do. Before Constantine ordered the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, Christians were persecuted for their beliefs. So to go out and openly preach their faith and even try and turn people away from the worship of their original gods was something that could ultimately end up with you being executed - which is something many early missionaries were (martyred). However, many faithful servants of Jesus (such as the apostles) did it anyway, because they believed that spreading the Word of God was more important than anything else.
Missionaries are sent out to cross cultural barriers and spread the gospel. Missionaries are not sent too foreign countries to destroy or to break the people down. Missionaries have faced scrutiny, because of the negative of missionaries in movies and in books. There some positive movies made about missionaries.
Amanda Berry Smith is one of the most courageous women in the history of American History. She was well known for “barrier-crossing prophets,” which Smith speaks about her complication of race, class, and gender that she has experienced throughout her life. She was able to overcome her pain through the Holy Spirit, whom she believes healed her wounds caused by these barriers, and sought entire sanctification. Later in her life, Smith became a preacher for National Camp Meeting Association for and promoted the Holiness Movement, which was taught by John Wesley. Her life’s story and ministry have an enormous impact on many people both white and colored.
African American women represent a significant proportion of congregation in most African American churches. “African American women make up about 66-88 percent majority in African American churches though they are not well represented in the church leadership.” The greatest variation that can be observed in women’s leadership is in the pastoral category. The situation is worse for unmarried women who want to be church ministers, pastor or preacher but it becomes complicated for women who are in relationships but not yet married. Nonetheless, unmarried women are still being ordained and appointed as pastors and bishops at a growing rate. One of the remarkable appointment which also marked a milestone
Sustaining missionaries already on the mission field is absolutely critical in the expanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A missionary is someone who gets sent to a destination and his/her task is to spread the Christian faith throughout that place. Vincent was a missionary in Taiwan for several years. He was very devoted to spreading the Christian faith in Taiwan in order to help children and adults in the area. For Vincent to go to a place that far from home and staying there for that amount of time takes true devotion. From him doing this, it shows that he is faithful and is very devoted to his faith.
The afterward in Let the Nations Be Glad! is written by Tom Seller, and it is about a little known passage in the book of 3rd John. Seller talks about sending missionaries into the world, and he defines a missionary as “someone who goes out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles” (Piper, p 263). What this means is that these people do not accept aid from governments, completely sustained by the sending party and local church members. A missionary is a person who dedicates their entire life to the Great Commission, someone who is obedient to the call of Christ in a way that makes a profound impact on their job. Many people think that a missionary is someone who is called to go and spread the gospel to the nations. While this is true, what they misunderstand is that we are all called to go to the nations, and we are all called to spread the name of
In the first chapter of “Christianity Rediscovered” by Vincent J. Donovan he is introducing us to the idea that missionaries now have a poor reputation due to their history. He says “History has offered the opportunity to deflect and distort the meaning of missionary work in every age”. For a long time a missionary was a person spreading the word of God and after years of doing so we have diminished many different beliefs, practices, cultures and history. At the time it was thought to be the right thing, to spread out and share the gospel to help people find meaning and acceptance. In today’s age a missionary is a lot of different things, in many cases it is more focused on the health and physical wellbeing of the people. Many people still share the gospel through missionary work, but in other cases it is more of a material aid. Donovan introduces the book as a voyage of discovery he wants us to put our normal beliefs aside to see his perspective of living a missionaries life and struggling with the fact of if you are helping or hurting.
It has been said that worship is the core or center of mission. The ultimate goal of any missionary is to bring people (entire people groups) into a passionate, relationship with God. John Piper states,
A missionary is an ambassador of Christ. Each must be yielded to the Lord, loving Him with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength. Specifically, a missionary is one whom God sends through the support of the Church to the unreached. All Christians, however, are called to be missionaries of the Gospel. The Lord works through them to rescue the lost and hurting in this world. The lifestyle is definitely not easy and is very extreme at times. Christianity is synonymous with a life of extreme danger. Yet even though personal hostility, danger, and martyrdom may not be present in your life, there is something else you are experiencing in your current Christian walk. Today in the world there are hundreds of thousands of countries that are either
The main task of the Church and of the Christian minister is the true preaching of the Word of God. Additionally, Paul in Colossians 1:25 makes the point the central purpose of ministry is the preaching of the Word. Preaching the Word of God also includes protecting the sheep from false doctrines.
Evangelism is a wide field of ministry that is captivating many, many ministers have been called into the field. It is one of the many fields we as believers are called into. We all have been given assignment before the beginning of time God knew what he would have us to do. Evangelist’s work in many different environments in their local community, nation, and abroad. We are being the hands and feet of Jesus. we should treat it as each and every person’s salvation is important to you.
No matter what path God calls a missionary to, the initial goals are the same. These goals are: 1) Build and edify the church, 2) Meeting needs, and 3) Spread the Gospel. The task of utmost importance is that of building the church, a community of believers. It is through evangelizing that men come to hear, know, and accept the redemptive plan of God through Jesus Christ. This is done by preaching and teaching this message when opportunity arises. It is also done by living out your faith in the day to day of mission life. We are to make the book of Acts our living example in growing and edifying a body of believers (Warren 26-31) (Hodges 61-62)
