During my time at Lethbridge College, I was given a brief explanation on how to properly read a research article. I found the instructions listed in the module notes for this course to be informative and helpful. I used the Research Process Map and chose a topic that I was interested in. The topic that I chose was Missing Youth. I was drawn to this topic as I tend to work with missing and runaway youth every day at my job. I chose to do my research on Google Scholar as it was a website I had not used in the past and wanted to get familiar with it. I typed in the words “missing, youth, detention center.”
The article examines the concept and content of the criminalistic characteristics of crimes on the basis of the literature, the paper discusses typical personality traits of juvenile offenders.
According to the American Civil Liberations Union (ACLU) there are close to 60,000 youths under the age of 18 that are incarcerated in either juvenile facilities or prison in the United States. In 2013 there were over 2500 youths alone in the state of Pennsylvania (America’s Addiction to Juvenile Incarceration: State by State). This shows that possibly there are reasons other than an adolescent being incorrigible behind the large amount of youths within the prison system. Some of those reasons could be a bad home environment that may entail mental, physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, emotional and/or physical neglect which then may lead to utilization of drugs/alcohol and homelessness. There has also been an adaption of the General Strain theory with the belief that the adolescent feels that due to their environment at home, they have no other choice than to commit a crime to survive.
