BACKGROUND Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that provides services and activities designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible ANC students and facilitate the transfer rate of eligible students to four-year institutions. The SSS Program promotes the development of a college climate supportive of the success of students. In addition to free tutoring, the program offers academic advising, career and personal counseling, and assistance in acquiring financial aid. SSS also provides various study skill workshops during the academic year to assist students in preparing for coursework and improving their grades. The SSS plan of operation is guided by a set of standardized objectives, which address a need and show that definable progress will be achieved. The need is apparent given the high percentage of first-generation and low-income students enrolled at ANC. SSS uses proactive coaching strategies that are designed to increase student success and improve student outcomes. The process includes helping students identify strengths and needs and building an efficient set of student success skills. These coaching strategies …show more content…
The objective is to help students see their education from a holistic approach as early as possible. The SSS staff wants to show students the importance of looking at all of the resources the college provides as tools for success. Dr. Bethany Tucker, from the Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students training, stated that students don’t always hear what we say the way we intend it, especially when they come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The MAP forces the SSS staff to deal with students on their level because the staff must actively listen to them to identify their issues. It also, opens the door for students to ask questions that they did not think of before and/or clarify things such as terms used at the
Taking a look at standard 1, a leader has to focus on creating visions and goals for students to be successful. One of the challenges I see is that a vision and goal is very important and having to create a vision and goal that can be attained by every student isn’t as easy as
Service. Challenge. Ethics. The motivation I have for attending a service academy can be summed up in these three words. Growing up in a military family, my life has always revolved around service, challenge and ethics. It is what is imbedded in me and it is what I strive to continue living by.
I believe some of the skills necessary to be outstanding when working in student support services are having strong interpersonal skills, compassion, care and respect for individuals. When students are lacking self-confidence a student support service provider can assist in motivating and inspiring them to thrive and excel. A student support service provider must be kind, compassionate and sensitive to the needs of others. Students need to feel cared for and respected as an individual. The student support service provider should be a compassionate and enthusiastic person who has a strong desire to motivate and inspire students with diverse backgrounds, especially those with learning disabilities. Also, it’s vital to have good time management
The number of students using these campus resources is growing every semester. Although many students on campus are willing to use these services, their availability is limited. Students are often discouraged to use these resources due unavailability of appointments, and long wait times. In order to increase the efficiency of these facilities and to uphold to their mission of helping students reach their full academic potential, I purpose to research several strategies that will increase the accessibility of these resources to a larger student population. Specifically, I purpose to increase the number of locations at which these facilities provide their services, recruit more staffs and increase their
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.

In the benchmark known as a Clear and Academic Plan and Pathway, students are asked a series of questions that reflect their interactions with a college advisor during their first year at the college. Specifically, the benchmark looks at whether or not the advisor assisted the students in setting academic goals and developing plans for college completion. For most students, constructive time spent with an advisor is critical for students when navigating the course of study or program at a community college.

Monitoring student progress on the transition plan- Are the students where they are supposed to be? What steps they are taking toward achieving this goal? What are working for them and what is not? Is there any changes that have to me made etc.
The following is a detailed outline of what is expected. You should create an outline first to help
There are many skills or attributes that can be beneficial when working in student support services. The qualities that are most necessary is patience, motivation, adaptable and communication. Patience is important when working in a student support service because frustration from an authority can cause a student to shut down. Patience allows a student to move confidently at the pace that is best for him or her to learn at. The second a worker gets frustrated, they lose a connection of trust that becomes crucial when working with a student. Motivation is critical because students often can’t see the benefits of things they are doing currently. They have a lack of understanding that the things they do now, impact the future. If you can show students
Blue Community College currently utilizes a program map for its students called a Student Plan. The student plan allows students to select their own course schedule; however, it provides an outline of the course sequence. It is imperative to ensure that the needs of the students are considered when creating an educational map. A through
Student personnel point of view encompasses the student as a whole. The concept of education is broadened o the student’’s well rounded development- physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually as well as intellectually. (sppv) Student affairs not only emphasize on academic excellence but to shape each individual as a unique human by providing a holistic learning and living environment. Student Affairs professionals play a pivotal role in the development of the students. By applying different theories in student development, they can foster student learning to help them shape their identity. Student affairs staff members must view themselves as educators to refute the belief that learning is held only in the classroom. (contested issue, 29). Learning does not only occur in the classroom but through out of class activities as well. Student affairs staff should talk about student learning and development to enhance the multiplicity of growth areas for students in higher education. These learning and development experiences do not simply happen to students. They happen with their active involvement. There are numerous branches of fields in student affairs that attend to the unique needs of each individual. Residence Director trains Residence assistance to cater to the needs of first year students who are new to the college environment.
