Hello Doctor Martin,
Thank you for your question. I apologize if I wasn't mentionned that, but I would wish to integrate them both, including several steps to my study: first will be to infiltrate the selected gang ( if possible I would wish to infiltrate several gangs in order to make a statistical comparision between them at the inciminalization scale). Once these data will be collected and comparison between gangs done. I will transcribe the mapping project, where the city zones wil be estimated by their gang's infectation. For example: zone one- will be indicated as the zone with the lowest gang's presence, and zone 5-will be the most infected zone. Afterwhat, I would make a proposition of the preventional program for each zone, depending
Living in Madera for 18 years, I came to respect law enforcement and all they have done to help better our community. The specific branch I respect the most is the gang task force. The officers of the gang task force have cleaned up the city of Madera and helped change many kids to avoid a life of crime. They have to do so much but yet, when I turn on the t.v. Or computer to dive in deeper about the gang task force line of work, most of what there is to find are authors, newscasters, and the general public bashing them along with the rest of law enforcement. It is basic human nature to stereotype and group things together. The gang task to no exception. The gang task officers are viewed by many as racist, profiling, and lying
Community mobilization would include local citizens and organizations working as a team to understand gang structures and provide social intervention and social opportunities. This would include police officers, probation officers, church groups whom would provide opportunities whenever possible on a micro level. On a micro and mezzo level, social interventions would then reach out to youths unable to connect with legitimate social institutions and provide crisis counseling, family counseling. Also providing referrals to services such as drug treatment, jobs, and educational programs. Provision of social opportunity would provide individualized services for each youth based on his or her needs. Suppression involves greater communication between agency service providers and control providers, jointly decide the outcome of a youth when trouble arises. Lastly, on a macro level, organizational change amongst local agencies and groups would all collaborate with one another providing important information for the program that the other may not be able to obtain. I believe I would of been interested in the macro aspect of the project doing outreach work because I feel as though it had the greatest impact on target youth. Outreach work is a key component of one of Chicago’s anti-gang violence program. On a macro approach the aim for this project is more societal and the model resembles that of a bureaucracy.
Chapter one goes over the history of a gang, with California in the 1980’s being the root in the gang problem in the United States. With 280 known gangs, consisting of 26,000 active members, its no surprise why the murder rate went from 200 to 800 homicides per year. The LAPD CRASH unit officers pioneered tactics, raid techniques, and interventions in gang infested areas. Their harsh and sometimes illegal activity set the bar on how to handle a gang problem in a major city. Research showed that in today’s gang problem, gangs are fighting a deadly game of cat and mouse with police. They have their hands on serious weapons, and fight each other nonstop, for territory and drug sales. Much of this chapter discusses research that would help police to move from media sources to
There are many overlapping themes and ideas present within the research report and the textbook. One main idea that was present in both documents, was the cultural aspect of gang integration. In both the textbook and in the research report, culture is intrinsically linked to gang involvement, as often times the culture that an individual practices will impact their standing within a gang. Furthermore, culture binds people together, which also happens when an individual joins a gang of like-minded and culturally similar others. Another area that was discussed in both documents, was how gang activity is related to school. In the textbook, school and other educational and institutional systems either excluded youth, or were simply not attended
Gang involvement is on the rise in most communities affecting socioeconomic status, racial relationships, and inhabitants (Esbensen et. al., 2012, p. 128). Despite a continuous increase with youth gang affiliations in underserved communities, there is still a scarcity of promising or effectual gang prevention and intervention programs offered by schools. Facing time and resource constraints school administrators need to consider the “cost and benefits” of each possible intervention plan (Esbensen et. al., 2012, p. 142). Consequential to low intervention programs, risk factors such as communal disorganization, poverty, low educational success, acquaintance
The Los Angeles intervention approach produces positive and negative attributes to combating gang related criminality. Gangs in society today, are problematic in many aspects. There are many different avenues city officials can take to combat or reduce gang related crime. Various methodologies have been used to take on this problem and have had successful results (Spergel,1986). “The general idea is that if gang members will not respond to ordinary social agency programs, then the programs must move out to the streets in order to achieve change (Klein,1965, p3. 183).”
The look and study of street gangs have been shifting over the past 4-5 decades due to changes in the tactics taken by sociologists. There were many books written about these gangs including “The Gang” , by Thrasher, which was recognized as one of the first or if not the first gang related to sociological views. People ask questions such as, “Why do people join these gangs and why do most of them end up causing havoc and violence within a city.” This is a question a normal person that isn’t looking at these people as subjects due for change but rather people who aren’t “normal”. Sociologists look at these people and ask questions like, “Where do they live? Who are they friends with? How and why did their social practices and cultural values change?” These are questions a sociologist would ask simply because there are many factors which come out when determining the choices of deviance within a person.
In building upon the precedent set within the Riverside community of Memphis, I would direct the Multi-Agency Gang Unit to gather more intelligence about other gangs within the city (Goggans, 2014). The Riverside Rollin’ 90 Crips were deemed to be a public nuisance
I threatened to shoot up the school and targeted a certain group of people. This was a mistake because that group of people was scared to come to school and get their education. Another mistake I made was threatening to shoot up the school, this affected everyone in the school and made the students and teachers worried.
The subject of gang violence produces strong thoughts and emotions in a lot of people like citizens, police officers and the victims who witness these crimes take place. Gang members are aware of the public feelings about their crimes, but they do not give any regard because they are fused in their own culture. In large cities all over the world whether they be third world or industrialized municipalities gangs are a real and often times are an overwhelming terror. While there are many theories that discuss entry into gangs, there is not a lot that go into detail about the gang confrontations, feuds, and culture. Those that actually only venture on how individuals leave gangs. Many theorist do not analysis, explain, and or offer a detail examination
In order to be hired to work for the UN or specifically for the UNODC, the employee must first, fill out an application on the UN careers site for the job of their choice. Upon submission, the application is evaluated in terms of experience, education and skills. Only if it is determined that the candidate met most or all of the requirements will they be contacted to undergo an assessment. These assessments may be a knowledge-based test or another type of simulation exercise. Based on the results of the test, candidates will then participate in a competency-based interview. Lastly, should the candidate be a fit for the position after all the assessments, a decision will be made by the head of the department.
In 2003 as a response to communities with a large amount and growing number of youth gangs the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, initiated the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The formation of gangs is seen as a response to system failures and community dysfunction. As a result, one of OJJPD’s anti-gang initiatives is to make communities safer and have a pro-social environment (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). Furthermore, OJJDP plans to provide economic and social opportunities that gangs often promise to new recruits which are often obtained in an illegal and dangerous fashion (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). OJJDP believes that the
Individuals who are affiliated with gangs commit crimes such as homicide consistently. Gangs target areas where people are not unified and would be less likely to contact authorities if violence broke out. Drive by shootings occur so often that Detective Dale Wallis says “they [gangs] do not care who’s going to get shot” (qtd. in Minty 1). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did a report to determine the top five United States cities to have high levels of gang homicide. Those five cities were Los Angeles, California; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Long Beach, California; Oakland, California, and Newark, New Jersey. The study
However, the mapping of this problem can be somehow difficult, because, even if the areas will be divided there is no garanty, that gangs won 't move from the exsistents areas, and construct the new gangs ' communities there where previosly the territory was more or less free from gangs (clean). What that mean, that the control, in it 's physical meaning won 't bring efficients results, in contrary will contribute to the “High Intensity Gang Areas” spread over the new territories. The clean territories will be fast infectated. We will extend the ' social disorganization ' over ' gangs ' not-deseased spaces. This won 't only influence negatively the new neigborhood, which are the exsisting established without gangs communities by the different way, like a) put in danger the youngest of this area to become possible future adherants. b) the inhabitants who won 't accept to chare their community with gangs will move away, leaving their places for the gangs members. 3) this situation will seeds the fear and for example in the inhabitants won 't be comfortable like before to circulate into their communities.
The study of the high crime rate in the city will include a range of research methods. I would indicate that there is no standard threshold for what constitutes a hot spot as well no clarity about what may be the best method to identify the area. In research of areas that may appear to be the hot spots in the city can vary depending on the area was researched. The variance in the research would fall into the unit of analysis, scale of the map, and the amount of data mapped. Having said that, moving forward I’ll explain the four methods that I will attempt to identify, describe, providing an example, indicate the relationship among them and lastly indicate which one would be best for identifying the highest crime. Each research method will be introduced to the same question in this process of (1) descriptive, (2) exploratory, (3) explanatory, and (4) quantitative research. These research methods will provide an interactively to provide an understanding of the question presented for the investigation ("Criminology and criminal justice research: methods," 2016).
