Santiago Montoya was born in Medellín, Colombia; at the age of eleven years-old he and his family moved to the city of New York. The repeated exposure to different concepts helped to improve his understanding of the language. This is when Rodriguez would become assimilated to American culture. As he grew up, these practices allowed him to have increased opportunities to earn degrees from Stanford and Columbia University. Moreover, he spent time in London as a Fulbright Scholar. This is showing how assimilation is a critical factor for anyone to take advantage of the opportunities available in society. (London, 2009)
In the “The Achievement of Desire” and “Para Teresa” Richard Rodriguez and Inez Avila describe the troubles of balancing life at home and at school. Rodriguez conveys the difficulties he had to face separating from his own culture to achieve academic success. His article portrays the cultural world and the educational world as separate institutions that cannot coexist in America. Throughout his text Rodriguez provides detailed experiences in order to explain his thought process. Inez Avila however presents her article as a letter dedicated to a school bully. In contrast to Rodriguez perspective Avila wrote her poem in English and Spanish to appeal to Mexican -American culture. She walks the reader through an argument between her and a fellow classmate as she was cornered in a bathroom. Her poem depicts how children who share the same culture discriminate within their own community. Both these articles are told from a Latino-American point of view yet they radically differ from each other.
Throughout the years, there have been many rises to power and dictators. Some of them being good and some of them being bad. Everyone remembers the bad ones such as, Hitler or The Roman Empire. But, there are some that go unrecognized such as, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo rise to power and dictatorship over the Dominican Republic brought on many people to rebel against him and eventually take him down.
As a scholarship boy, Rodriguez received many years of schooling and kept moving away from family as the time in education passed. This was what Rodriguez chosen before he actually realized his long for past. Once he admitted his nostalgia, he chose to physically leave academy and back home to stay with his family. But no sooner, he suspect his return and finally understand “If, because of my schooling, I had grown culturally separated from my parents, my education finally had given me ways of speaking and caring about that fact.” (Rodriguez, 532). At the end of his essay, he summarized his gain from his schooling, which is ‘Ways of speaking and caring’ himself or, in other word, discover the true behind reality. His discovery process of ‘ways of speaking and caring’ include his relationship with his family and teacher, experience of reading, and class shifted as he move from elementary school through college and graduate school to his career as a teacher and a writer.

I am Max Stevens with BBQ news reporting live at the crazy scene. Juan Pablo stole a 1999 yellow Cadillac. The two days ago, a Colombian hero was assassinated by dangerous rebel in the small town he was assigned to clean up.
His success in school and educational attainment was aided by his parents support, mentor and teachers help, and his self-driven personality. I believe that his ability to learn English so quickly was the prerequisite that allowed him to do well in school (Feliciano Lec. 2/24/16). Matt’s father continued to pull him and his brothers out from school early before the year ended until one day “the lead person of the farmworkers told [him] that he had to leave [them] in school” but by then he was already a sophomore in high school. Contrary to Lopez’s (2003) argument in her article that young men tend to be disengaged from their studies and appeal to the masculine association of their culture, Matt stayed focused in school and always stayed on top of his homework. I think that the reason he was able to stay focused in school and have a relationship with his teachers was because his dad would not let them dress up or hangout with cholos. Students of Mexican descent who define themselves as Chicano or Cholo tend to have lower educational attainment (Feliciano Lec. 1/25/16).
In Rodriguez’s essay of “The Achievement of Desire” he explained the lack of identity he had while in school “ In these various ways, books brought me academic success as I hoped that they would. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to acquire a point of view.”
