Science and My Daily Life

Science is important to learn and study because it helps up to understand how things are created and function in the world. Events that happen in the natural world are explained based off of observation and experience.

For as long as I could see the stars, I knew I wanted to reach them. Gazing at the stars gave me time to question how the world worked, and kindled my passion for science. The world of science intrigues me because it varies on so many levels. It ranges from the study of the smallest particles in the world to the research of the seemingly never-ending universe. With so much to learn, I never want to be absent in class and miss the opportunity of discovering something new. Science has influenced me to be curious as to why things work, and motivates me to find the explanations behind things.

​Ever since I was a child, I have loved science. I learned at a young age to always keep asking questions and to never settle with just simply not knowing something. The thought of how everything works on a molecular level never ceases to fascinate me. I have other interests spanning multiple fields, but none can compare to my love of science. I quite enjoy being in the labs and getting to do experiments to uncover answers that were otherwise unknown to me. It is that curiosity and interest that keeps my fascination towards the realm of science strong.

The Student Center for Science Engagement (SCSE) at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), was established in 2008 with the mission to support students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines with the challenges they face in their academic and career development. Mentoring relationships, critical components of the SCSE’s influence, are fostered by the SCSE’s advisors, mostly Ph.D.-level minority scientists. Accessibility to STEM professionals who reflect the student population has allowed students to envision themselves as scientists. Typically in the gastrointestinal system, enzymes are produced by the pancreas in order to aid in digestion. These enzymes must travel through small channels to reach the pancreatic duct and the small intestine where it can digest food. In CF patients, these channels become blocked, typically due to impairment in the lubrication of the endothelial cells that line the gastrointestinal organs. When this occurs, decreased amounts of enzymes reach the intestine resulting in pancreatic insufficiency. These patients must ingest enzymes every time they eat to aid in the digestion

Science is essential to the world, and its potential holds vast opportunities for life itself. There will never be a time where society is not dependent upon science. Modern science offers a new realm of possibilities for those who embark on such a journey. The world of science never sleeps; there is work being conducted right here and now. Some ground breaking contributions to science have been made by scientists in this decade. They are living and working to make the world a better place.
