California coastal commision meeting in long beach. the commision considered a $100 million expansion of the tanks in which orcas will be held. these captive orcas are held, starved, and torn from their families, put into concrete tank and explioted for human entertainment. now that activists brought light into this issue, seaworld sales have declined. seawolds solution? to buld a latger more humn concrete tank. while many seaworld advocates, employees and pass holders spoke for it we stood our ground. orcas should thruve in their natural habitat, not in a concrete tank. seaworld bribed their season pass holders for attending. new expansion will triple the size under one condition which is to stop breeding them unnaturally.
According to their stock price the public does not like Seaworld mistreated Orcas. Their stock prices has drop significant over the last two year when the incident came out. Seaworld tickets sales has also gone down due to the public finding out what they do to their orcas. The fact that Orcas lied to the public saying that Orcas live just as in capitivity then in wild really hurt their
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
Since 1961, 157 orcas, or killer whales, have been ripped from their homes and shoved into captivity. 127 of these orcas are now dead. With the number of captured orcas plus the number of those born into captivity, The W.D.C. (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) reports that, “At least 162 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves” ( “The Fate”1). Out of the 127 taken into captivity, 44 have died in SeaWorld. There are currently 58 orcas residing in 14 marine parks in eight different countries. 24 of those orcas are held in SeaWorld’s three parks in the United States. Since 2002, 14 have been taken out of the wild and put into these marine parks. (“The Fate”1) It is not fair for these innocent creatures to be physically and mentally manipulated and damaged. Such brutality would not be condoned if it were targeted towards a human, and it should not be condoned when targeted toward an animal. Orca whales should not be held in captivity because they are forced to live in subpar conditions, they are mistreated while in captivity, and they are led to aggressive behavior.
Imagine a place where you can see your favorite sea animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, even penguins. Doesn’t that sound like somewhere you would enjoy going? SeaWorld is what comes to most people’s minds when they think of this, but is SeaWorld really that wonderful? Is SeaWorld truly what it’s hyped up to be? SeaWorld claims to be a sanctuary for animals where they keep animals like killer whales safe from the dangers of the world. Well, SeaWorld should really get a dictionary because a “sanctuary” is truly not what they give these animals. Orcas are the main attraction of SeaWorld but they are also one of the animals that suffer the most. Orcas in SeaWorld lifelessly float in their pool with little to no shade from the sun. In the wild,
Imagine living life in a space as confined as your bathtub; now imagine being a subject to public entertainment and being forced to perform to earn your food. This is what SeaWorld is doing to its orca whales. The captivity of orca whales at SeaWorld is something that the world will never agree on. Some people think that orca whales being held captive will not result in an unhealthy life, while others can certainly say differently. SeaWorld is more concerned about ticket sales and the money lining their pocket than they are about the treating these amazing creatures humanely. They find ways to justify their ill hearted decisions, choosing to look the other way as the orcas are clearly damaged from living in captivity.
Allowing the killer whales of SeaWorld to stay with their family would help more than anything. Orcas are incredibly emotional creatures and are very protective of their young, so when they are separated from their family it causes them great distress, but this does not stop the big companies from separating families. Most animals in captivity have been living there their entire lives. This means that they do not know how to hunt or behave as a wild animal should, which leads to the second way to fix the problems of captivity. Samantha Berg, a former SeaWorld trainer suggests, “They should release the animals that are young enough and healthy enough to be released.
Many people go to SeaWorld or other marine amusement parks to see these animals that they have never seen before for their own pleasure and wonders. Some people don’t know or care how these creatures even got there in the first place. Taking these orcas from the wild is depleting the population in the wild and it is killing them by keeping them in captivity. There is no way to mimic the ocean so that these animals can live comfortably and happy in captivity. Orcas do not thrive in captivity despite claim’s, they often suffer deadly physical, psychological, and social side effects. (My thesis-made up before I did my research)
Have you ever gone and seen orcas( killer whales) at a park like sea world. Do you really know how they feel. Sure you might be happy, but are they? At sea world they have not been taken orcas from wild, but instead they have been over breeding the ones they have already have. That is a lot of over breeding and in which can hurt the orcas. Orcas should not be kept in captivity because they have shorter life spans, it gives them health problems, and when forced to live in captivity they become killing machines.
Despite SeaWorld standing behind their kind treatment towards their orcas, animal rights activists believe that statement to be false. In 1970, more than 90 orcas were stalked and herded into a three-acre net by
It’s 2016 and we have people riding on hover boards, a woman is running for president and we have SeaWorld getting rid of Shamu. WAIT! Sea world is getting rid of Shamu? You don’t mean the most bodacious black and white sea creature in the entire world that makes dreams come true, do you? Well I am very sorry to say that this is one hundred percent true. And it’s all because of the animal rights groups that believe SeaWorld is not capable of caring for these animals. When in fact the theme park actually goes beyond the limit for animal care and treats their animals with only the best intentions. Because of SeaWorld’s delicate care for each and every animal, they actually get longer lifespans yet somehow people still believe that SeaWorld is bad at taking care of them. This is most likely do to the recent death of one of the most popular orcas and the recent airing of an incredibly false and biased movie “Blackfish”. SeaWorld loves their animals just as much as orcas like squid, I believe that SeaWorld is more than capable of taking care of their aquatic sea creatures and that animal activists and the “Blackfish” supporters are completely and utterly wrong.
The documentary “Blackfish” shows the horrifying reality of what it’s really like keeping animals in captivity. Things that I was impressed by in this movie was the fact that when SeaWorld was first opening they needed orcas for the park, and they would go to the Puget Sound, herd the mother whales and babies, then trap them in a net and take the baby orcas. This relates to the film’s position on whether orcas should be held in captivity because, they had interviewed a guy who had the job at the time to capture the orcas. In the beginning he explained how he was so excited to be doing that job, and that he thought he was doing something amazing, but by the end of the interview he explained how it was of the worst things he has ever done in his life. He described how the mother whales would cry and that some of the baby whales didn’t make it to the trip back.
SeaWorld should be shut down for its cruel, and inhumane methods of keeping and training animals. Orcas, dolphins, and other animals are used like machines, and not living things. They are confined to tiny tanks, taken away from their homes and their families, and forced to perform for the entertainment of people.
Although SeaWorld is known worldwide for their marine animal life along with many other attractions inside the parks, their methods to sustain this marine animal entertainment has become controversial due to their allegations of animal abuse and ethical misconduct. The treatment they give to their marine animal life is not adequate for these mature adult animals to live as they would in the wild. This mistreatment along with SeaWorld’s ethical misconduct of it marine animal life is wrong; SeaWorld should be held accountable through stricter regulations and better living conditions for animals held captive.
SeaWorld are destroying orcas lives and effecting every aspect of their natural instincts. While destroying the orcas they are also lying to the public and covering up all the signs of bad health of the orcas.
A massive black and white 10,000 pound animal glides through the water and jumps up out of the big blue sea to get its breath; it then sinks back down into the mysterious waters and keeps swimming with its pod in the wild. Unfortunately, not every orca has this freedom. SeaWorld is a very popular place for young children to experience animals that they may never see again; however, as we get older we realize that these animals may not be getting everything they need to survive. Killer Whales should not be kept in captivity because they could get a disease, the orca population is decreasing, and they are more likely to die sooner in the tanks.
