A seigneur's duties differ from a landlord because a seigneur is selected by the French king. Landlords work for their own living. Since all the land in New France was owned by the king, the seigneurs had to swear obedience to him. Landlords are self-hired, therefore have a little more freedom in their job, although they have to obey the law. The French king commanded his seigneurs to protect the land of the seigneury. Landlords, on the other hand, have to do maintenance, cleaning, and things any rental process requires. A seigneur needs to build a manor house in the seigneury.
