The Battle of Verdun (Bataille de Verdun, IPA: [bataj də vɛʁdœ̃], Schlacht um Verdun, IPA: [ʃlaxt ˀʊm ˈvɛɐdœŋ]), fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916, was the largest and longest battle of the First World War on the Western Front between the German and French armies. The battle took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. The German 5th Army attacked the defences of the Fortified Region of Verdun (RFV, Région Fortifiée de Verdun) and those of the French Second Army on the right bank of the Meuse. Inspired by the experience of the Second Battle of Champagne in 1915, the Germans planned rapidly to capture the Meuse Heights, an excellent defensive position with good observation for the artillery to bombard Verdun. The Germans hoped that the French would commit their strategic reserve to recapture the position and suffer catastrophic losses in a battle of annihilation, not costly for the Germans because of their tactical advantage.

Alexandre Hogue was born February 22, 1898 in Missouri and moved to Denton, Texas soon after. He went to high school in Dallas, Texas but attended college for one year at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Alexandre got a job at Dallas Morning News as an illustrator so he maoved back to Dallas. In 1921, he moved to New York City to work with calligraphy, film advertisements, and studied in different museums. Every summer, he would travel to and from Texas to draw with Charles Franklin Reaugh and to start his painting career. He got a job at Texas State College for Women as an art teacher, and later on made head of the art department at Hockaday Junior College. Hogue became head of the art department at the University of Tulsa, where he settled down and then later on, died.

Eric Segriff is a self-animator that made a couple of animated shorts. His most famous one is called Surge. It is about a world of identical robots that work together in an assembly line. Unfortunately, one robot malfunctions due to low battery. To resolve the problem, the other robots link to each other from a power source. Eventually, the sparks from the power source travel down the assembly of robots to boost dead robot. The composition of the cartoon is well-put together, considering that Segriff worked on it alone. He used dark definite shapes to outline the robots. In addition, the robots’ heads are shaped like altered squares. He did not use any details for the interiors of the figures. Pierre Balmain was born in St. Jean de Maurjenne, Savoi in 1914. He acquired early training from two of the best designers from that time period which helped him open his own Haute Couture house following the war in 1945. Balmain drew an audience in very quickly when people discovered his new image he created for women.
