Over the past semester, I have had the opportunity to be a part of this Citizen and Self class. Throughout my time in the class, I have had the pleasure of having my world-scope expanded and my definition of a citizen challenged. A major part of this class involved group work researching a topic/issue and then using the research to write a paper and lead a class discussion on the topic/issue and potential solutions for it. Additionally, we each had the task of placing ourselves in the shoes of a stakeholder for our topic and prepare a paper discussing their potential opinions and how the issue may affect them. Furthermore, outside of my deliberation, I was able to attend two additional deliberations. “Hindsight is always 20/20,” as a former teacher of mine would always say, now that I have made it through all these projects I can reflect on their successes, failures, and my own personal growth. Going back to the beginning of the project, if I were to redo the project, I would approach the research project almost entirely different. When the group I was part of began our research, it became obvious fairly quickly that we were going to have a difficult time finding relevant information for our project about WKU’s mutual agreement to cut ties with Russell Athletics and sign with Nike as their exclusive on-field sponsor being that the switch was still fairly new. In order to focus our research, we ended up creating speculations about the transition which we then sought to
While I appreciated that one of my peers provided feedback on my work, I feel that the feedback that was provided did not fulfill the assignment. My peer did not provide detailed feedback on my paper that could be adequately incorporated in my review and revisions. Most of the information that was provided as feedback were simply statements that reiterated what the prompt question was. Please see the below feedback provided to me by my peer.
The areas of productiveness in this session for me included the paraphrasing and minimal encouragers. Throughout this session I felt that my paraphrasing was clear and concise. It allowed the client to think about what he had said, while being able to provide me with feedback and allowed for the conversation to flow naturally.
On Sunday, December 3, 2017, I delivered my first oral presentation on Janette, a peer in my Communicating Effectively course at Manhattanville College. The objective of the project was to familiarize yourself with a classmate, ask/answer questions provided by Professor Brosnan, and then share the knowledge you gained about the individual in a two-minute presentation. The presentation was required to introduce the classmate, what graduate program they are pursuing, why he/she is in the program, their long-term career goal(s), current occupation, favorite class, and an interesting fun fact. The oral presentations were done in the classroom without any visual aid, allowing you to use notes if preferred. By analyzing my 1 minute and 25 second presentation using the “7 Step Presentation Process” I uncovered my strengths and weaknesses as a presenter.
The College of Charleston was my preferred college out of the colleges I applied to. A majority of the time this was a good choice. Then there are times when part of me thinks attending a different college would have been a better idea. Then again, it is only the first semester of my freshman year. Freshman year has a handful of requirements for classes, including the First Year Experience and the seminar that goes with it and many other general education courses. There were a good many choices to choose from for my First Year Experience class and The Gullah Community: Ethnographic Research in Gender and Identity was the one that stood out to me the most.
It would be amazing to be accepted into EcoQuest, and I hope that after you read this you think it would be amazing to have me in EcoQuest too. In the application form you asked everyone applying to comment on these things: our relationship with nature; our relationship with other students; our ability to work independently and make responsible decisions; how we maintain a healthy & active lifestyle; and our academic effort. In the following paragraphs I will address these items.
Even though this class was a requirement for my nursing school, I was interested in getting to know more about my health and how to live a healthy life. After the first analysis, I had several goals and things I wanted to achieve personally, however, the three most important ones were my water intake, eating healthy which includes eating more vegetables and more protein foods since my actual intake was below the recommended intake and finally exercising more to keep fit and strong. Exercising has always been a problem for me because I always think am healthy because of my size and weight, but I have had several incidences where I have been told by my doctor to exercise, so this class was an eye opener for me since I read a lot about exercise but was feeling lazy to start and kept procrastinating.
As the first five weeks of Writing 39B have passed, I believe that I have made some improvements in my writing as a result of the feedback from the professor, the multiple writing assignments, and reading the Anteater’s Guide to Writing and Rhetoric. Although I can still improve in all facets of my writing, the progress I have made so far was very much needed.
The time was 7:15a.m. and the day was Wednesday, September 13th, 2017. Sitting at home on my old, worn out, brown reclining chair, I casually sipped my morning cup of coffee pondering my strange and unfamiliar dream from the night before.[Parallelism & Balance] It left me with a feeling of curiosity at its similarities with reality, but then I reminded myself it was just a dream and that no one really meets god for he doesn’t exist.[Self Reflection] As I sat reading The Washington Post from my apartment on the sixth floor of a highrise in New York City, New York, my mind slowly strayed towards work.[Where] After looking at my physics phd diploma, I began fretting the long day I have ahead of myself at a secret lab in New York, where the old manhattan project took place; which was being repurposed for my research.[Irony] To alleviate the dread and despair I now contained, I came upon the decision to go on a walk before work.[Balance]
Before this module, I was nervous about will I be able to get a placement. Or even how to apply for a placement? Although I had a general knowledge about CV, I didn’t know that CV must be tailored for each company you are applying for. I just had one CV which I used for everything. But now, because of Management Skills module, I am more relaxed as I have a basic understanding about how to apply, tailor CV so it meets the requirement of the business and what employee look for.
As the saying goes, we all have skeletons in our closet. As you get older you have more and more things in your past that you are ashamed of. There are two kinds of ways you can handle these regrets. The first one is the easiest, let your past mistakes consume you and fall apart. The other option is a bit more difficult, reflect on these mistakes and learn from them. For this assignment I will be discussing my own past, revisiting bad memories and reflecting on some of my mistakes.
When I interviewed with Brian and Jeff at the beginning of the summer I had very little idea what went on in the logistics world besides the fact that it is a rapidly growing field that needs more professionals now. I didn’t know anything that happened in the real world of logistics, only what I have read and learned in books at UMSL. There is a very big difference between reading about the processes, regulations, and technology and going in to work and experiencing how all those things are used in the real world. Aside from those things, I didn’t know that brokerage in freight was so prevalent.
Teaching has always been my desire. I started as a young child teaching my stuffed animals and moved to my cousins. I spent many of summers teaching members of my family. My love has only grown since becoming a certified teacher in Alabama. I am committed to my students and strive to show them. I willingly meet with students and parents, if needed, when it is convenient for them. I come in early, stay late, work weekends, and summers. I strive to grow in my teaching and knowledge of my content plus the needs of my students. My students are my children. I attend as many of their events outside of school. Students that feel safe and wanted will be more open to learning. Once inside
Here is how to achieve the prize while remaining seated six feet away. The first method is by rolling seven sheets of paper tightly to create a more solid structure. I can see also paper clip each rolled paper together to create a long pole. Additionally, running the string through the center of the paper pole to ensure it does not fall apart is another way of achieving the prize while remaining seated six feet away. Besides, I can also utilize the paper roll to lasso the string on which the prize is hanging. Pulling the prize closer to the chair until it is reachable from a seated position is an additional way achieve the prize while remaining seated 6 feet away.
As I reflect more on my childhood years and the complexity of my family as it goes back generations I have come to better understand myself. Consequently, there are a number of personal and professional implications from these reflections. The personal implications have been the most difficult to work through, and many have only come to the surface through working on keeping a healthy marriage with my wife Megan and in raising our daughter together. The first implication, is the need to live out something different than what was model to me growing up. This analysis has helped me realize that most of the relationships that I was a part of, or witnessed growing up, were filled with anxiety. This was often caused by not sharing the same core values, or conforming to expectations. However, I have been challenged in my own expectations for others and how I can be a non-anxious presence in my family relationships.
Whether you are the CEO of a huge corporation or you manage a small business, if you are in a leadership position at any company, one of the keys to your success as well as the success of the company is self-reflection. Often, this self-reflection starts with understanding why you do things a specific way and working to change your habits and attitude to allow yourself to be more successful.
