Dr. Alexander Cole and Dr. William Self, professors at the Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences, were inducted to the UCF Scroll and Quill Society on April 19, according to a press release from the College of Medicine.
UCF’s Scroll and Quill Society honors the excellence of selected faculty who have brought attention to the university by authoring books and received recognition through peer-reviewed publications in journals.
Self, professor of microbial metabolism, has been teaching at UCF since 2003. His research focuses on the anti-inflammatory properties of cerium oxide-based materials and the study of selenium. In his lab, Self is currently studying a compound and it’s effects on the organism C. difficile, a common hospital infection.

“This work has led many other investigators around the world to study this nanomaterial, but we were one of the first groups to study these nanoparticles in a biomedical context.
Self has served as the principal investigator and the co-principal investigator on multiple research projects that have acquired grants from the National Institute of Health and National Science Foundation, according to a press release from UCF.
Self said he’s proud of his induction to the Scroll and Quill Society as it’s based on his accomplishments as assessed by his peers – fellow UCF faculty.
“To gain the respect of your peers is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of being a faculty member,” Self said.
Also inducted to the society, Cole has a research focus on infectious disease. studies the host defense of human mucosal surfaces, with emphasis on Staphylococcus aureus and HIV transmission and pathogenesis.
In addition to teaching at UCF since 2003, Cole has also been named to UCF’s Millionaire’s Club – which recognizes researchers who have received grants exceeding $1 million – on multiple occasions. If the aforementioned criteria are met, the student will be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society in a ceremony on Thursday, May 11, 2016 at 6:00 pm at Beaufort Middle School.
