The movie Remember the Titans helps viewers understand the racial struggle in the 1950s, 160, and 1970s. The most important of these can be seen by examining the shifts in attitude and self sacrifice. Understanding these concepts allows the viewers to go beyond the status quo, and do what they feel is right, not what they’re told to as it occurs in the movie and in the character’s lives. Understanding this theme allows us to apply it to our own lives and learn a lesson from it. The self sacrifice in this movie is a thing that gradually grows. For example right away Louis sits with the colored kids. Being the person he is, not caring what anyone thinks he sits by Rev and Blue, getting strange looks from everyone. Another example is Coach Yoast.
Remember the Titans is a deeply impactful and motivation movie. Set during the 1970s when segregation and integration were hot topics, the film largely focuses on prejudice. One of the most impactful scenes from the movie when Gerry Bertier is laying in his hospital bed right after his life-altering car accident and the only person he wants to see is his newfound best friend Julius Campbell . At the beginning of the movie, both boys are very unwilling to get to know each other even the slightest bit considering the stressful time they were going through with a newly integrated school and team (Remember the Titans, 2001). They stereotyped the opposite race, or made generalizations about the characteristics of the other group (King, 2010, p. 402).
Recently my english class had read the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. We also watched the movie Remember the Titans. Race relations have changed drastically through the years and is represented in the book and the movie. In this analysis, I will write about how in America we have gotten past seeing color and see people for who they are.
Remember the Titans, is a film that is about a predominantly white culture in an era that is predominantly white dominated over blacks. In the film, the school makes a very bold movement of combining both black colored students and white colored students so that they attend the same school. In addition, the school also demotes their successful white football coach to instead a black football coach, something that had never been done before.
Prejudice, as defined in psychology, involves holding a negative attitude towards the members of a group, based merely on their membership of that group. Any group can be the focus of prejudice. A person, who is prejudiced against a certain group, has a tendency to overlook the individual characteristics or behavior of members of the group to whom he/she is prejudiced, merely because they belong to that group. In the film ‘Remember the Titans’ (2000), prejudice is portrayed in several ways, but mainly focuses on the discrimination of the African-Americans. One form of prejudice, which if frequently revisited in the film, is racism. Racism occurs when prejudice and discrimination are directed at people who are members of a particular
There once was a time when African Americans and Whites were segregated for generations but it was time for a change. This inspiring story, Remember the Titans, shows how a group of high school football players had to learn to respect each other regardless of the color of their skin. The movie took place during 1971 when blacks and whites were just now beginning to spark together and become unified. It took a little more time until the whites were able to completely accept the African Americans in their society. Many protest came from white parents who were fighting the integration of African americans into their children’s school. Although many did protest, the football players prevailed and became of symbol of unity in the area. This lead
Narratives written during different times and across varying places have influenced society’s values, attitudes and beliefs. harper lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and the film Remember The Titans based on the events of the 1970s, contain similar themes which can be explored despite their contrasting times and places. in this essay there is going to be some comparison between the novel and the film. also there will be some similarities between the both.
The movie Remember the Titans directed by Boaz Yakin is based on the racial and social tensions of the South. Alexandria, Virginia. This community was torn apart by racial conflicts, when it was ordered to combine their public schools. Cautiously, the school board replaces the popular white coach, Bill Yoast (Will Patton), with Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), a creditable black coach, as head coach of the T.C Williams Titans Football team. Boone, after the coaching switch up, invites Yoast to come back and join the team while being the new coach of the defensive line. Yoast accepts and together they inspire, not just a team, but the whole town to stop and “trust the soul of a man rather than the look of him”. This paper will cover a critical time in American history, when a 1971 Supreme Court mandate required southern school districts to finally end segregation. The drive to put white and African American children in the same educational classrooms was the most vital and potentially pervasive aspect of the civil-right movement. Based on actual events that happened during that time, the movie Remember the Titans shows it’s audience how to deal with the issue of racism and illustrates how one can overcome prejudice by uniting for a common cause or goal. This movie and essay will not only provide an impacting lesson of racism, but will also teach and provide examples of trust, loyalty, unity, and integrity.
“How do Boaz Yakin and Tate Taylor depict historical content to develop the theme of racism in Remember the Titans and The Help in similar and different ways?”
When watching any movie, it is important to know the accuracy of the details that are in said movie. The movie that I watched in particular was Remember the Titans, a motivational film made in 2000 based on the true story of a Virginia football team. In the movie, two high schools in Virginia in 1971, one black and one white, combined to form the senior high school known as T.C Williams. This meant that the two football teams had to combine too, under the command of Coach Herman Boone and Coach Bill Yoast. The film depicts the struggle, but eventual victory, of the 1971 Titan’s football team, as a result of putting aside racial differences and learning to judge a man by his character, as opposed to his skin color. While this all seems pleasant, it is important to know if everything is accurate. For this reason, I picked three specific people/things t research. The first person is Coach Herman Boone. The second thing I chose to research was the actual 1971 T.C Williams football team. The final research topic I chose was school integration. After gathering enough information, I came to the conclusion that Remember the Titans is not, in fact, a historically accurate film.
The fist example is when Carton sacrificed his own recognition for Stryver’s. He has been in Stryver’s shadows for most of his life and has never gotten the credit that he deserved. Carton has even been described as “never being a lion, he was an amazingly good jackal, and that he rendered suit and service to Stryver in that humble capacity” (65). Secondly, Carton sacrifices his safety when he goes to eavesdrop in the wine-shop. Jacques Three, the Defarges, and the Vengeance were there, planning on how to execute the Darnay generation.
Remember the Titans is an American sports drama film that displays cultural differences that have an effect on the community and the relationships within the community between the same culture as well as other cultures among friends, family, and newcomers. On the other side of things it is also a heartfelt and uplifting story that brings two unlikely groups together in a time that dealt with racism, segregation, discrimination and many other conflicts between majority and minority. Remember the Titans is a movie based off of a true story. When we see the film, we see how there are many different conflict styles, the many stages of relational development, cultural differences between two separate parties and many others that are depicted in
This movie challenges us to evaluate our legacy. “Remember the Titans” is a story
The second and most interesting aspect of the play was the strong theme of self-sacrifice. One cannot
Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life
In the film “remember the titans” which Boaz Yakin directed there were some significant character changes. But the character that seemed to change the most in my opinion was Gerry Bertier. In this essay I will describe the character Gerry and what he was like at the start of the movie how he viewed other people and his attitude, how he changed during the movie how he viewed other people and how his attitude changed and the impact of his change. During 1971 the school of TC Williams intergraded the black and whites under one roof.
