All resources meet the 4-A’s, which include accessible, acceptability, affordability, and availability. Due to the increased amount of homelessness within Savannah, the limits of availability are usually filled to capacity, therefore leaving people on the street. This overflow is a likely culprit for the small group observed during the window survey. Furthermore, the advertising of available resources does not meet the needs of those who do not have access to television, radio, newspaper, or internet. Regardless, of the advertisement, within the community there are many resources for those in need. There are locations and specific times when the homeless can shower and do laundry at local churches. Also, there are food stamps or soup kitchens available to people throughout the day. There are also assistance programs within medical practices that cover healthcare, prescription assistance, counseling, mental health, and substance abuse treatment. A noted gap within the healthcare coverage, is the fact that often those in need must show proof of homelessness. Obtaining proof of homelessness may be difficult. That fact leads the likelihood of many homeless people being refused

Industrial Heights’s majority of buildings were in disrepair. There were multiple abandoned vehicles on the streets. Trash cans were lit on fire for a source of heat for the large homeless population. There were many stray animals that were mainly witnessed around unkempt waste and trash. The trash was not in receptacles and often laid on the ground with no system in place to contain it. Casper Park District also had some buildings in disrepair. There stray animals present with improperly managed waste on the ground. A major complaint of residents in the affordable housing is factory smoke, 21% of complaints received reflect factory smoke and 18% reflect complaints of dog barking. Nightingale Square and Acer Tech have better quality buildings with a new green/eco-friendly apartment complex erupted in Nightingale Square. There are still witnessed stray animals and poor residential waste management in the entirety of Sentinel City. I did observe waste receptacles present but they looked like they were for commercial use

Just outside of Casper Park District, the bus continues toward Industrial Heights neighborhood, which has 38,855 population and predominately 46.8% Latino and 13.1 % African American with average household income of $24,672. The community consist of old buildings and there are more graffiti on outer walls. There are adults and teenagers walking along the street, where some appears to be heading toward an old “Grocery Store” or “Downtown Store”. Throughout the area, the roads are dirty with cracks and debris. There are many trash bags outside the building or dumpsters, and close to the sidewalks. On West Main Street, there are many children in playground within the Industrial Heights Elementary school. A police officer walks the students from the bus drop-offs toward the school. Further out of the school area on Elm Street, there is a broken car on the roadside, another vehicle burning and a firetruck heading toward it. A police patrol car is on Stephens

As one drives around Sentinel City, it does not take long to see that the Industrial Heights area has a lot of alarming health concerns. To start off with, there is trash and debris, such as appliances and tires, along the streets and alleys. As a result, there are rats and stray dogs roaming around. This not only poses a risk for injury, but also a risk for spreading diseases. Next, there are abandoned and boarded up buildings, with broken windows and doors that has graffiti drawn all over them. This could cause an increase risk for injury and also increase the number of homeless people living in the area which in turn might cause the crime rate to increase. What is a Sanctuary City? A Sanctuary City is a term used to describe the many jurisdictions that have varying levels of protection for undocumented citizens. There is no formal or legal definition for the status of sanctuary city and it has become a polarizing term in recent years. The tension over this issue has been made even more obvious in light of Donald Trump’s recent executive order which threatens to deny federal funding to jurisdictions that do not completely cooperate with federal immigration enforcement agents.

Soup kitchens and food pantries are also important and mostly unfunded organizations that are helping to fight hunger. Food pantries are located throughout North Carolina and almost every county or town has one. Here, families can purchase foods at a discounted price or receive them for free. Most are set up just as a grocery store would be and have many different options for food. Almost all sites accept donations of money or food. The most common donated items are canned foods, such as soups and canned vegetables; and boxed sides such as mashed potatoes and macaroni, because most just need to have water added and can be easily fixed. Although there are thousands of food pantries, twenty-eight percent of clients get turned away because a shortage of food, which means many end up going hungry (“All About Hunger”). Soup kitchens also provide free meals to families and their children. Soup kitchens rely on citizens to volunteer to cook and serve food. Volunteers must buy and cook the meals with their own money and some money donated by the kitchen. Most kitchens serve foods with a lot of carbs to keep the children full longer since most only get one to two meals a day. Initially, my teammates and I did not choose soup kitchen as our topic. We chose it after we had the consultation with our lecturer. She suggested that soup kitchen might be a suitable topic for us. At first, I only know that soup kitchens are the organizations that distribute food to homeless people and homeless people are the people that have no shelter and financial resources. However, after this community project I learnt that soup kitchens are not only distributing food, they also provide different kinds of services (for examples some courses to help the homeless people).
