Service Learning Project
Throughout the experience of participating in a whole-class service learning project, the emphasis was always placed upon teamwork. As a future educator, the ways in which we were able to come together and meet a community need was truly a humbling experience. The entire project was thoughtfully organized. This type of professionalism is what I want to embody.
What happened?
• As a group decision, our class decided the community lacked “A Little Free Library.” What better way to bond people together than by a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange? This was special because the project connected “once” strangers together for a good cause.
What did I do?
• I was placed on the decoration team which was responsible for making sure the wooden box was water tight for preservation purposes, getting “LMU” letters to paint to personalize our library, and paint the wooden box to match the business where the library would be located.

I could not help but think about how I could integrate this project into my student’s academic curriculum. The students would be able to think, write, and discuss on how they felt and what they did to contribute to the success of a community-based project. Students will hopefully understand how education reaches far beyond the classroom and will be able to hopefully one day become a life-long volunteer for their own
The experience I encountered during the service learning project was great. Throughout the weeks allocated for the service learning project, I tutored grade two and three pupils from three different schools under two agencies. The names of the agencies are Lion Catcher and MLK Community Center. This project gave me the opportunity to work with little kids for a long time. This provided me with the privilege to help and work with people who are enthusiastic about learning. Through my colleagues and me, we were able to achieve the goal of the service learning project. One of the goals is to work with minorities who needs help. This goal does not benefit our clients only but us also, it helped us organize and improve the way we think about supporting our client and managed good clinical judgment.
Serving others is a down deep way of learning more about yourself and helping others to see past themselves. Our Business and Professional Communication class participated in several service projects, which were interesting and exciting to be involved with helping others. As I am studying the major courses of Early Childhood/Special Education, our group project with the “Big Brothers Big Sister” program was very memorable to me. It was wonderful to have fun and participate in various activities with the kids. The environment was caring due to everyone helping each other accomplish different tasks. It was a great feeling to be able to share our time, talents, and hearts with the kids.
The first objective that my service learning project can relate to is objective five. This is to analyze the historically and morally necessary forces of change that brought an end to slavery and segregation, as well as second-class citizenship for women and people of color (Course Objectives, 2015). Bringing the history of slavery and segregation to the forefront may be difficult at times, but it is important to know just how far America has come. Understanding and analyzing the events that abolished segregation also allows individuals to consider racial tensions that still arise in current society.
The problem of pollution comes with the ever expanding human population. With this growing population our demand for products also increases. We live in a consumer society, especially in the United States, and making huge quantities of products generates a large amount of pollution and waste. American citizens love to buy, we represent only 5% of the global population but we use 25% of the world's resources. The unfortunate part is that all the resources we use to make products end up in some landfill somewhere because a huge amount of Americans don't understand the importance of recycling and reducing consumption of products. American citizens throw away 40% of the food they purchase. That number is ridiculous, especially since so many Americans
The project was an embodiment of my service to the community that served me years before and made me into the person I am today. Service is something that everyone should feel
Encouraging students to engage in meaningful, sustained community service and get involved in causes that speak to
My BU 101 community service project involved volunteering at the Owensboro animal shelter. Some of the tasks we were responsible for completing were spraying down and cleaning the litter pans, spraying out the dog cages, cleaning out the cat cages, filling the animals food and water bowls, bathing the animals, and walking the dogs. I believe this was a good community service project our class because most of us love animals and we were able to do some good. As a class were able to help the shelter care for the animals, giving them more time to do other things like completing paper work or washing and drying the towels. It helped install a sense of responsibility and accomplishment in me.
I would implement a service learning project for my third grade class based on the learning and performance objectives centered on culture (TEK §113.14.3.14). To begin, I would facilitate a classroom discussion to create an anchor chart of the heroic deeds of individuals, including military and first responders provides for our community. At this point we would begin to collect names of military families and first responders in our class. Next, I would have students work in groups to research examples of heroic deeds of the military and first responders. Then, I would have students brainstorm and create a class list of ways we can support the military and first responders. If students have a family member
Project SHINE deals with integrating immigrants and refugees into this country. African Family Health Organization (AFAHO) is the name of the site I was placed in through project SHINE. Students volunteering for project SHINE are instructed to teach ESL without having been previously licensed to do so. Student teaching learners English do not go too indebt when dealing with the English language. We are told not to go deep into grammar, as the learners are there to generally become comfortable with the English language. Whether it is from learning the alphabet, months of the year, how to ask for help, read street signs, and count change at the grocery store the learners surely do learn a lot and in my experience have obtained a lot of
The most meaningful service-based experience I took part in was helping kids at Upward Bound Asthma Camp. At this camp I volunteered to be a camp counselor, which required me to monitor the young campers, get them involved in many activities, and teach them how to handle their asthma. Many of students came from different backgrounds and many ranged from ages five to twelve. When it came to teaching the young campers how to manage their asthma, it was a significant moment to me because it brought me memories of when I had trouble dealing with my asthma when I was around their age. Reminiscing about my past experience influenced me to get my campers to be knowledgeable about their condition. After explaining the guidelines to the campers, I noticed

Service learning is a way of combining learning objectives with community service to enhance their skills throughout an organization or community. However, I admired myself as I took on the position in the registration office as a student worker. Many would say filing papers, running errands, and assisting others is a basic job for a young man, but honestly, it was the one of the best experiences I have ever had. As the days traveled along, I never knew what to expect next or what I might learn. Perhaps having an adventurous mind and harmonious heart, growing out of the comfort zone was manifest. Working in the registration office was a way to accomplish great opportunities, seek learning experiences, and improve academic skills.
For the service-learning project I decided to go to the kid’s club “Zuvedra” and during this time I have discovered several new things about myself. I have never thought that at the age of 20 I will behave in the same manner as kids act at the age of 8-10 years. I was playing card game such as Dixit with children of different ages and, after several games, we already knew who and in what way is thinking. In addition, during the project, after two days of practice, I have learned how to play a table football and started to play at the same level as “professionals” with several mouths of experience. I really was not expecting that I will enjoy playing with kids so much. Nonetheless, this became an additional proof that I am open for the new experience. All in all, every time I went there I was enjoying every activity the same way as Buddhists worldview suggests people to value every moment and be happy.
Serving your community is a civic responsibility that every community member should be accountable for. There are many in need within our community and it takes the entire community to support those in need. Before this, I had not participated in a service learning experience, though I had participated in some individual projects within the community. Researching service organizations provided me with a greater appreciation for the extent of need within our community.
Service learning is always viewed as being something you just have to do. If you want a good grade, then you do it, but you rush through it because you don’t appreciate the opportunity. I used to think about it that way because it seemed like it was just wasting my time. However, I’ve discovered that the older I get, the more I analyze things, whether it be school work or general life questions. Over the summer, I had an abundance of time to think things through and work out everything in my mind. I believe that service learning can help you realise your passion as it did with me. I volunteered at Martin Millennium to help clean up their campus and revitalize the Earth on which their school stands. I spread mulch in areas of dry soil and around the playground, so the kids could play without fear of hurting themselves. We spread the mulch around the trees and by the walkways. I volunteered at the Tender Mercies pet organization as well. I helped feed the dogs and walk them outside. I did the daily routine of washing food bowls and dog blankets too.
